A triumphant Sony press release which heralded next week's arrival of Killzone 2 and, effectively, the kick-off for its 2009 line-up, contained a tentative list of the games that will likely cause PS3 owners to foam at the mouth with anticipation over the coming months. The list contained two mammoths in particular -- according to Sony, both God of War III and Zipper Interactive's MAG: Massive Action Game will be among the "blockbuster exclusives" which will land on the console "throughout the year."
The imminent launch window for the two titles (which were mentioned alongside inFamous, Heavy Rain, MLB 09: The Show and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves) is just a bit surprising -- though we suppose Sony's selective wording ("throughout the year") could mean that the listed titles will be dropping by this time in 2010. Still, barring any delays, 2009's shaping up to be a heck of a year for the enthusiastic supporters of Sony's monolithic home console.

or maybe wait till the game is released and then announced that is eve smarter lol but ya i find it hard to believe that GOW3 will be out this yr and that MAG will be launched bug free (for the most part)

Why single out Sony for this? Alan Wake says hi.
When companies need a PR boost, they make announcements, even if the games are far away.

Weird, I'm not singling out sony i said that this goes for every game company, but it didn't show up.
Anyway, if they make the announcement they should be sure that the games will release when they say they will, now I don't know whether or not sony is certain, but they do have a track record when it comes to these kinds of things

Ice~, I agree, partially, They should wait a little bit longer to reveal these games, however, it is good to know that these games come out this year.

Ice~, THAT I agree with. They need to be certain about release dates before ANY announcement. Now I understand one or two weeks delayed due to a shipping error. That like 1/20 games. But like DNF (Duke Nukem Forever, or Did Not Finish), when you get to that length, that's ridicules.

Last year was a great year for the PS3.
I guess it just depends if year of the ps3 means games or sales.

you know, this is the first time I've heard anyone actually say this in a serious manner... usually it's just the kids who want to fight that go "just like you all say every year is year of the PS3"For the record, though, I agree, and this will be the first time I'll ever say it: 2009 looks like it will be "The Year of the PS3."

depends on your console preferences of course. i had a flipping blast with my PS3 last year (not so much the year before) and this year is shaping up to be quite the same. i also had alot of fun with my 360 last year too so it was win-win for me. on the other hand though, i only bought one Wii game all of last year (Brawl).
so im sure this year will be great for PS3 and 360, it's just the Wii im worried about again.

well that's okay I guess but who's going to stop Kratos and Master Chief from fighting?

Well obviously Mareo and Saunik will keep Kratos and Master Chief from going at it while Mario and Sonic head off their dopplegangers.

I personally think Kratos would make a kick ass master chief, I mean, they are both spartans and all :D

Can see it now, Kratos / Masterchief jumping onto the back of a hunter, strangling it with his assault rifle, bashing it till its spitting blood then spilling more blood on the battle field, plus getting jiggy with Cortana every now and again :)

WOO! Another great year of games for PS3!!!!
Year of the PS3 x2 in a row!!!!!!
My must buys are:
Uncharted 2
MAG (if out this year)
GoWIII (same as MAG)
I have to wait on Heavy Rain, read some reviews first... though it does look killer.
And I have never been much for sports games.

People have high hopes for MAG because Zipper Interactive, the developers behind the Socom series, is behind it.

It's a powerful lineup, indeed, and could make for a spectacular year for the PS3
how that will translate into sales, we shall only see. Sony's pricing will have some say, and a holiday price drop would be ideal for them, to drop the best of these along with a price drop would allow them to bask in platform profitability, and then move onward

Remember thats just a smidgen of the total exclusive offerings on the PS3 in 2009 and totally puts the multiplatforms & psn games aside.
white knight chronicles
dc universe online
the agency
quantum theory
yakuza 3
demons souls
probably many others as well. just saying that the ps3 has a lot of fantastic exclusives *on paper*. how those come out in practice will remain to be seen. I would also be happy to see twisted metal and syphon filter in 2009 but won't hold my breath.

I wouldn't include DC online as an exclusive as it's on PC. But the rest, yup that's quite a bit of exclusives.

I'm skipping-work excited for Killzone 2, but the last beat 'em up I liked was Final Fight so God of War 3 fails to ring any "excitement" bells with me. Anybody know how I can get back into the genre?

Yakuza 2 for the PS2 should help you out with that.

I would like to see more from MAG before I go ahead and get the hype train started. It's a great concept and will probably be a great game but we don't know if it's going to include a monthly subscription fee or not.
Even if it is this time next year there are still plenty of big time PS3 games dropping this year. It's a great year to be a PS3 owner and it starts next week ... w00t w00t
After playing the demo for Yakuza 3 (on the JAP PSN store) I am left foaming at the mouth yet again. I've decided to hold off on importing it for now after seeing scope and scale of the demo. I could figure it out but there is just to much there for me to overcome in terms of the story and mini games. If it never gets localized I will just eventually import it. So, everyone tired of hearing me talk about this game can now have their wish.

MAG might fare better, because it being a Massive game is the main concept (duh)
But the point is that while Massive online multiplayer battles have been done before (like in Resistance), the games themselves tended to become overly chaotic, to the point where it was just a big clusterfuck, and no longer felt like a game. If they tailor the action specifically to support huge numbers of players, it could turn out better than other such efforts

I'm going to stay just curious about MAG right up until I play it. I always preferred Counter-Strike over Socom, and this looks like it might just be Socom on a much larger scale. Even if that's the case, it will still get some of my attention, but I doubt it will win my heart over if it takes the super realistic route.Typing this on the wireless keypad for PS3, for anyone who wants to know, it's really cool if you like thumb pads, but I would wait until they drop the price to $30-$35.

I'm definitely siked about and will be buying KZ2, Uncharted 2, GoW3, Heavy Rain, and M.A.G. (256 players....one map!! WOW)...not to mention all the great PSN games that have been coming out....Can't wait for Fat Princess!! Good time to own a PS3 or to look into buying one....and if the 2.7 firmware rumor are only HALF true...the excuses NOT to own a PS3 if your a gamer will be few.

Anyone else curious about how MAG is going to turn out? 256 is a brave concept but any non-mmo-based application doesn't look good.
I guess we'll see, if they're up to it.
