People are starting to lose interest in this game because of how long it's taking (plus the whole no information thing). This isn't exactly the way you go about re-establishing the excitement. A brief trailer, even cg at this point, would have been a much better tease...

Exactly. Teasing with this stupid non-information is worse than not saying anything at all.

This game used to be in fanboy's "Power lists" as being one of the 360's great white hopes (even tho it's a PC title as well).

As far as mystery/noir games go, Heavy Rain has shown more promise than Alan Wake. At least we know that it will come out this year and how it will play.

No, we haven't lost interest for this game.

I really hope that Remedy has a release date for Alan Wake at E3.

@ryan
"This game used to be in fanboy's "Power lists" as being one of the 360's great white hopes"

Yeah, just like PS3 fanboys with Heavy Rain.

How bout we wait for the two games to come out and then we can talk about which one is the best, ok ryan?

Yeah, Heavy Rain's been in those lists too, but now it has a little more standing ground since we know more about what we are getting into with HR than AW.

They could both very well suck, but HR at least has given us an idea of what it plays like. I definitely can form more of an opinion around HR than AW based on current information that's for certain.

It just goes along with any other X game that gets dumped into a lame list. It's an unknown factor. The game could be absolute crap like Haze. Then again, you could also get a total unknown that comes out of nowhere and amazes you, yet it wasn't ever on a list.

Basically, just because the title is being hyped by the publisher doesn't mean the game will be any good and putting all kinds of eggs into that basket is a bad idea. All it means is that the publisher's marketing department is doing its job.

I dont really understand how you people "lose interest" because of a lack of information? They are working on the game, let them work. I dont get how it not coming out LIKE OMG RIGHT AWAY will make you not want to play it when it does come out. I guess I'll just never understand you people that think that way.
The game looks awesome from what we've seen, the game sounds awesome from what we've heard. Is everyone just afraid that a game that is story centered will be to hard to comprehend therefore they don't want to play it?

More like developers not meeting us halfway with some gameplay footage or progression of the game. Aside from early test vids I don't really know how this game will engage players beyond a compelling story which a book can easily provide. Things like enemy ai, puzzles etc. etc.

The world looks pretty from what we've seen, some interesting weather physics. But that isn't enough 2-3 years later. That's why people are losing interest. And a small update such as this certainly doesn't help.

Who knows tho, they may end up surprising everyone by keeping so secretive. Until I see something significant tho, I could care less about Alan Wake.

Preferably, they should have just kept their mouths shut until they knew, 100%, that the game was, at the very longest, 6 months away from release. All of this teasing is just pissing me off. A little teasing is alright, but like getting teased by the same woman for years with nothing to show for it, this is getting incredibly old.

The problem is, the cat was already out of the bag. Remedy let word slip WAY too early on this game. The best option would to not say anything about it at all until that 6 months point arrives. Most people would have forgotten about Alan Wake at this point and then hitting us with a "coming in June 2009" announcement with a sweet trailer would have been a marketing home run. This junk is them getting no-hit by some bush league nobody.

i dont know that people loose interest as much as they get tired of waiting on info. it's like you can only hang on the edge of ur seat for so long before ur butt falls asleep. people will be excited again as it nears release but right now people are tired of being teased since people keep talking about it but there is next to no info out about it besides a trailer or two.

i know i lost interest in LBP since they kept delaying it, but then when it was nearing release i got excited again. not the same situation but the same idea. people will still buy it when it drops.

I agree with both of you guys. They should've just kept working on this in secret instead of debuting it as a tech demo years ago.

It might still be a successful game when it comes out, but I for one wouldn't hype a game without anything to show for it. When you keep saying "wait for it, it'll be awesome!" every chance you get for years, your audience does tend to get a little frustrated.

Ryan, the problem with your logic is, you're blaming Remedy for things that the videogame journalists did. They aren't guilty of over-hyping their game with nothing to show for it, the websites that touted it as the next big thing and put the game on those lists are.

OK, dronesensor,

Was this small paragraph a part of the media or thought up by the developers?

Was the demo waaaay back in 2006 part of the media or did Remedy bring that to the public's attention?

How about the trailer that showed little to no gameplay and only cinematics? Media or Remedy?

How about the little content that has been shown? Is that the media's fault or Remedy's?

I think you know the answer to all these. Sure it's the media's fault for hyping it, but it's Remedy's for not keeping our interest.

-Or showing us any real development for that matter. So in a sense they are really not meeting us halfway selling us to the game.

It's being made by 30 talented people I understand. While this is a huge undertaking for a game these days, you still have to consider what to show and when to show it.

@ Ryan

Since when are developers obligated to walk us through the development of their games? I can think of dozens of examples of developers not being as forthcoming as you insist Remedy must be. Hell, Square-Enix gets away with it every time there's a new Final Fantasy announced.
We've seen in-game footage. We've read story tidbits. For all we know, Remedy has perfectly sound reasons for remaining as tight-lipped as they have. The problem isn't with Remedy, it's with you. Your own expectations are what have led you to be disappointed.

I have been, and am still interesting in this game. At this point, it seems they want to release a good game instead of a BulletWitch.
As for the paragraph, here is my interpretation :
"The amount of pages keeps growing each night. There are also new edits on the old pages. They keep getting more aggressive. The story is rewriting itself."
They have been working on the story element, and they have been making changes to previous parts to have everything fit properly. It's becoming much more stressful because of how long it's taking.
"The protagonist is now my namesake, and his wife is called Alice. The most worrying aspect: the genre seems to be shifting. It's turning into a horror story."
People are loosing hope in the game even being released, but it will make it through just like "Alice in Wonderland". The genre may be shifting more towards horror from adventure/survival/horror.
"I can no longer be certain whether the hero can succeed or even survive. Apart for jumbled fragments of bad dreams and an oppressive feeling, I can remember nothing of the process when I wake up."
They are not sure weather the game will do well on the market, but they hope it will at least be known. At the same time, the loss of enthusiasm for the game is not helping, and they need to somehow not allow that to affect their work.
"But this morning, a breakthrough! When I came to my senses, I could smell her perfume on my shirt. I am close. I know it. I must push on."
They hit a large milestone, and effectively were able to solve a large issue, or were able to push a lot of work out extremely quickly recently. The people above them gave them something for incentive to continue working, and try to get the game out sooner.

Hahaha, uh, Nathan, I think you're reading into this too much. It's supposed to be something Alan Wake wrote; the character is a writer. It's nothing more than a little plot tidbit to try and get us tantalized, it's not a comment on how the game's development is progressing.

Don't you guys get it what this text means?
"The amount of pages keeps growing each night. There are also new edits on the old pages. They keep getting more aggressive. The story is rewriting itself. - Alan Wake"

This is from ingame.Alan is a writer and his girlfriend is named Alice. He writes here that he changed his old scripts and fears that it really resembles his own life, and in the end,his story will come true. And while he himself has become the protagonist in his own book, the story of Alan Wake is the story that Alan has written down.
I think he made the protagonist a copy of himself so he could symphatise more with him,But suddenly it all comes true.We only don't know why it comes true, what makes these things come to life. That's what we'll have to find out.

More importantly, it implies that he is blacking out every night for a time, during which he is writing and editing his own book without any knowledge of doing so. Every morning he wakes up and all he remembers are nightmares. Now, all the things that were rewritten in his book (note also that the book-version of him has a wife named Alice which might not necessarily be the name of his wife who obviously was diagnosed with a terminal disease, prompting Alan to murder her a la SH2. Also, SH2 spoilers in previous sentence. You have been warned.), whose protagonist he has unconsciously rewritten as himself, are coming true. He also seems to be searching for someone (his wife? daughter?) which could be another reason other than writing a book that he is out in the country; the new story in the book might have also led him to believe that there is a possibility of him being reunited with his deceased wife or daughter, which is why he is letting the story play out despite the obvious peril he is in.

Fuck me, that's intriguing.

I wikipedia'd it. They have a small plot summary but I wasn't far off. His wife, Alice, brings him to this small town because she thinks it will be a good environment for him to write, but then she disappears and all this business with the nightmares and rewriting the book starts.

Also, judging from the first trailer, he is a complete insomniac, aside from the times when he blacks out (which are probably not every night, or even always at night, for that matter), and he does indeed have some kind of troubled past (kind of par for the course for a story that closely resembles the Silent Hill series; that's a good thing, by the way).

AAAAAAAANYWAY, that's about all I can glean from two trailers, a Wikipedia article and a cryptic developer note.

I've always liked interesting terrain and topography in game worlds, so this game really appeals for that reason. I'd love a GTA game set in a detailed world like that, as there wasn't enough forest in San Andreas to really feel lost in the wilderness. Judging by the Alan Wake world (Bright Falls is it called?) I wonder if this game will have a bigfoot rumour? If not, I'm starting one!

While it's an impressive weather and physics demo, I don't get a sense of what I'm doing the whole game. Add to that it's a large world they are creating and while I can't rule out sandbox gameplay, I doubt that's what they are going for with the suspense thriller theme and all.
