In the most recent (and arguably most forthright) installment of Iwata Asks, the Nintendo head honcho sat down to bounce a few questions off of a few members of the company's Development Engineering Department regarding the recently released Nintendo DSi. The devs outlined an interesting history of the shutterbugged handheld, one characterized on their end with "some frustration" -- apparently, sticking to the technological standard of an extremely popular device while simultaneously increasing its desirable features is a difficult compromise to make twice in two years.
One of the interesting features that fell by the wayside during this compromise was an additional DS cart slot, allowing the handheld to house two titles simultaneously. This feature was apparently included in the DSi's initial design, but lent itself to a slightly bulkier frame for the handheld, much to the chagrin of Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis and Development division. They shot the design down, leading to the single-cart, slimmed-down design that's currently taking Japan by storm. Man, where were those guys when the Virtual Boy was designed?

littlejim, I would say that if they make something at everyone will buy, they were successful. It doesn't matter if you make something that is so awesome it costs hundreds to make if a) you lose money because you sell it at a loss, or b) noone will buy it because it cost to much. No business will survive for very long if they sell something at a loss so that leaves option b.

Most of my files are in AAC format, anyway. I was happily surprised when I realized I wouldn't have to convert anything for the DSi. Then I was LESS happy when I saw that I can't afford a DSi. -.-

Nintendo is a money making machine. Looks like no one can stop the Nintendo Regime now.

Damnit, that just pisses me off. The one thing I was really hoping for in a new DS design was multiple cart slots, so I could carry a few DS games around with me when I brought my DS. Instead, I always have to try and pick one.

I'd rather have the extra slot myself... or the GBA slot back. The DS Lite is almost too small as it is.

This isn't worth £150, or how many Euros they're planning to charge. Just because European currency has depreciated when compared to the Yen, doesn't mean you can go and start ripping off your customers. It's embarrassing that Nintendo actually think they can get away with this. Hopefully it will bomb, or focus public attention onto the PSP.

The DSi is not a replacement for the DS, but that doesn't guarantee they won't discontinue the original design anyway. The GBA slot is part of what the DS is, so much so that some DS games require it for full functionality. As a result, it's impossible to move the design forward by abandoning GBA support. The DSi is a tangent, a derivative. It's perfect for the more affluent gamers to have together with their real DS systems. Let's hope Nentendo continues to produce complete DS systems, in addition to the DSi.

Sorry if this question is redundant, I haven't found this information anywhere else.
Will any form of DSi Rumble be possible?
Does the DSi use the same charger? I already have a car charger for the DS, it would suck to need that replaced.

Don't they already know we don't care about how slim it is? We want the GBA slot! That makes it impossible to import our GBA pokemon onto D/P or play Guitar hero! Soon enough the DS Lites will no longer be availible, but, oh look! "GBA Pokemon Games and DS Pokemon Games! I can transmit through them? Oh, I need a Ds lite... what's that?" "Oh hey Guitar hero portable! I need a DS lite, where are they?" Won't be too good. For those who want a GBA slot and DSi ware, well they need $200.
Despite the gba slot problem, I'm getting it. I can just play guitar hero/transfer pokemon on my old DS (original), and maybe trade them over to Platinum or (if they exist) the G/S remakes using my DSi.
(Speaking of the DS original, I DON'T CARE HOW "FAT" IT IS! I'M NOT TRADING IT IN! Also, why the heck does the extra bulk matter? As long as it fits in my bag, I'm happy. Also, it's way more durable.)
