Jumpgate Evolution trailer contains a few lasers
32
We've been wondering what was going to set Codemasters' upcoming spacefaring MMO Jumpgate Evolution apart from other, longer established astronautical online titles. The answer might just be in the new trailer for the game which you see above -- lasers. More lasers than a San Francisco warehouse rave. We've done the math, there's an unprecedented 158:1 ratio of lasers to seconds of gameplay shown. That is a great deal of lasers.
Also, from what we've seen, it's probably going to stand out due to its fast-paced, dynamic combat and gorgeous visuals -- both of which lend themselves to laser proliferation. If you want to get your hands on the title, they're currently accepting beta applicants -- otherwise, your pilgrimage into Codemasters' final frontier will have to wait for Jumpgate's June release.

Looks awesome. If I had the time and money to properly play an MMO I would definititelly jump into this. Shame the graphics aren't up to par with EVE online though (from what I could tell from the video anyway). I really don't know how CCP got that game looking so good with such megre sys. reqs.

The real-time combat seems to be the only thing this game has going for it, otherwise its a cartoony-looking mess that doesn't seem to be particularly conductive of the space conflict theme they're trying to portray. If EVE looks more interesting than your game, you're doing it wrong.
I did sign up for the beta, just to see if it turns out better than it looks. But seriously: Hint to future space game devs; try and make your ships look like spacecraft, not toys with rocket boosters strapped to the end.

Looks totally great. It could be really epic. I've signed up for Beta so really hoping I get in.
This is a space mmo that really could get a good following if the combat can be as good as the game looks. Epic space battles = win.

That looked AMAZING!!?!?!?
Mind=blown.
It's a shame I don't have a great gaming PC nor do I want to pony up the dough for a monthly subscription fee. This looks like the type of game that I would get sucked into for hours on end.

But I'm from Australia too! That's why I was asking. :P
(not really, I didn't click the link)
I hope that only means we can't get the beta, as opposed to the actual game. :\
I can't imagine THIS would have a problem getting classified.

lol, they didn't really do the math, it's actually a 167:1 ratio...
...ok, ok, I didn't do the math either... If I had that much time on my hands, I'd actually be able to try for 3 stars on all of the Mirror's Edge time trial maps... I swear, getting 3 stars on some of those maps must require you to play it ALL THE TIME... soooo frustrating...
...
...where am I?

This sounds a lot like eve with more epic battles..if they use a system for skills that is better then eve (which I hate) I will jump ship to Jumpgate.

All I really want is a Wing Commander kinda game in a Babylon 5ish universe. Is that too much to ask for?

Psh. Those aren't real lasers. Real lasers don't have a travel time and aren't fired as projectiles.

MMO just means there a lot of people playing online at the same time. It does not necessarily mean that this game will play like jike how you imagine it to.

Yea I signed up for the beta last week so here's hoping. Man, Get Ready to Join the Fight, seriously that's just been done before. They should have said Get ready to Enter the Fray. Anyways, totally sick and I'm so in. *I'm Fry shooting lasers in the planet express ship*

Gods, what a blast from the past! I still have a boxed copy of Microsoft Allegiance sitting in a shelf somewhere. It was the first space sim game I played. Aspects of the game was so well thought out that it was way ahead of its time. It even supported the Sidewinder Force Feedback joystick too. Straining against the real, palpanble G-forces on your joystick, as you steered your ship around in a high-speed dogfight was exhilarating. Plus you could even man turrets aboard capital ships / dreadnoughts, defending against attackers as someone else pilots the ship towards a destination. Man, those were the days.
I wonder if the current free Allegiance version still supports force-feedback? That may just convince me to dig up the old joystick...

Man, I wish someone would just make a sequel to Earth & Beyond with a focus on PVP space combat...
Now THAT was a space-themed MMO done right.

Looks more exciting than Eve, better looking ships. Srsly why are so many Eve ships so freakin ugly. Ugh. We're a super advanced civilzation, and by advanced we mean we evolved beyond our need for industrial design. Nope don't need it, evolved beyond it. Yeesh. Eve's market system is the only thing going for it. Unless you're in the middle of nowhere and you need a new ship, then it sucks.
