BioWare community representatives are telling players not to delete their original Mass Effect saves, giving the impression that they will affect something in the recently announced sequel. Dropping a tiny nugget of information in the intergalactic freak-out (over the alleged death of hero Commander Shepard) taking place on the BioWare forums, no less than three employees have made sure to point out that players should not erase previous save files.
No further details about the game were mentioned, and this does not guarantee Shepard will survive to fight in the sequel. Worst case scenario: The game may use the save file information to show Shepard in a space coffin.

I am pissed that my character from the first game is dead. I was really looking forward to being Commander Shepard again and continuing in his adventures.

No not really. I just hope it's not like KOTOR as in go look for Shepard.

A few things about this seem odd. I remember a long time ago they told us to keep our game saves for the sequel, so why would they kill the character that we built up in those games saves with the expectation of them being brought into the next game at that level and ability? They seemed to really push that we would get that option. Also, he's in the DLC so far and is the 1st human spectre, so I have trouble seeing them just say he's dead and move on that fast. The whole thing doesn't work for me.
I'm thinking they are messing with us and there will be some kind of a revelation about him really being alive and finding him in the second game if they stick with claiming he's dead.

Your save file also has a record of all the decision you made throughout the game (i.e. saving the galactic council, keeping certain party members alive, etc).
Nobody ever thought it would be possible to kill off Shephard but still carry over other information from the save file?

God I hated that final decision between saving the Galactic Council or everyone on board the Citadel. I saved everyone on the Citadel thinking I was making the paragon choice when Bioware considered that the renegade choice.

teasers usually suck balls but this one is pretty entertaining. i seriously doubt shepard is dead, and seeing how you keep your game save it should be obvious.

You could both die, and play your character from the original. Mebbe you die part of the way through the 2nd one.

@haggard
the citadel gets saved and so do all its inhabitants, but what changes is whether the council lives or dies, the number of alliance fleet ships that survive, and then there's other differentiated endings depending on whether you were a renegade or paragon throughout the whole game and also which choice you made. I cant really remember what changes in those but i think it's either an only human council or new council with human member

It could be like the Suikoden games where your saved game didn't bring over the same characters but unlocked various extras and expanded story options. Like going from 1 to 2 allowed you to get McDohl in your party temporarily and let you return visit to the Scarlett Moon Empire (or whatever you decided to name it in the first game) and 2 to 3 unlocked various play scripts for the theater.

Paragon and Renegade don't correspond directly to "good" and "evil"
They correspond to "serves the interest of the higher-ups" and "does what it takes to do the job"
HINT: Killing the higher-ups doesn't count as "serving their interests"! =D

It could be that you play 50 years later, shepards dead, you play as the son. The mom would be the chick you choose to do it with or if you didnt go all the way, i would be a new charachter, who is a female opposite of shepard. He has simalir traits as hiis father, and looks exactly like him

Well, whatever it be (I really do hope Shepard is not dead) I think it is awesome that your previous saves are going to have an affect on the gameplay for 2.
It makes sense with the numerous decisions you have to make throughout the game, so I am really happy that they have done something regarding the story line and the potential differences people may have. Ashley or Kaiden anyone?

There is a "Perfect Shepard" FAQ on gamefaqs at least that tells you how to create the best possible character to see in ME2.
I don't know what information has been given out before, but this guide at least tells you to make the correct choices throughout the game with alignment, character death, and choice of endings... as well as picking shepard's class and maximizing skill points. So maybe all of this would be relevant, or maybe the guide's creator is just being extra cautious.

And even if they do announce one, it's unlikely to come out the same year as the X360 and PC versions.

if they wanted to announce the PS3 version they would've come out and said it, no?
360 and Windows only = xbox 360 "console" exclusive
fanboys throw this term around in the fanboy wars (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_360_games , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_games )

What do they call games released on PS3 and 360 only?
Oh, that's right "Multiplatform Releases". Please tell me that someone saw what I did there?

Well copy and paste from your 360, and if that doesn't work, try sticking your 360 into the PS3 disk drive, gd luck :D

Dude, that's exactly what I'm saying. Multiplat could just mean 2 platforms like 360/PC.

I personally think it would be great if it came across both consoles. By which I am suprised at EA if they didn't bring it across. Then again, plot and all, hmm

Then again...again, its not as if the plot was all that engrosing to me to begin with, so I guess its a possibilty, if not now, then in the future.

Yeah, I know. They are probably waiting for E3 to present their "Megaton".
But I don't think it'll beat last year's Megaton tho.

Yeah, it is pretty weird that Joystiq is the only one that has "confirmed" the PS3 version. They should just do it already instead of leading people on.

Well technically, they aren't getting ahead of themselves at all, since the IP is not owned by Micro like Say Gears and Halo are, the game could pull a Lost Planet or Bioshock and appear on PS3, obviously the first wouldn't be able to as it was exclusive to Micro and 360, but apart from petty reasons like the plot and game saves, theres no reason why it can't feature on PS3. They would just have to put something in the PS3 version to get them up to sratch with whats going on, and surely they have a 'start new game option' despite the claim of needing the first game's save because what of those who buy this game without the first one, or will they be forced to play the first like Sims 2 or Warcraft do with thier expansions?
So really this game could be on PC, 360 and PS3 until EA states otherwise, and EA have kept pretty much mumm on the details of which ways it will go. At least we know Capcom's Lost Planet 2 is offically on both (as far as I know) and Bioshock 2 is also a definate, but nothing I've seen gives me any confirmed details ME will be 360 exclusive, and knowing EA, the same company that took Half Life 2 and remade for PS3, and Red Alert and remade for PS3 to ensure multiplatformism, would they really keep it exclusive? I wonder....
