I always felt that Shadow of the Colossus and Ico did a great job of portraying emotion.

Amen. Shadow of Colossus was everything this game wishes it was.

Flower is a flash game with superior graphics. The fact its on PS3 only makes it more pretentious.

I'd much rather emotive games take cues from Ico and Shadow of the Colossus than flOwer. Stripping gameplay to advance your vaguely successful attempt at drawing out an emotion is hardly a direction I would be proud of. If gameplay is an obstacle to your artistic goals then make a movie or something, because you clearly shouldn't be making a game.

Ico is easily in my top 5 games of all time list. If they redid it, or SotC, for current gen I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Nope. It just means you are not getting better and better. Modern games aren't improving anything about you.

Except maybe your reflexes. Or puzzle solving ability. Or thinking quickly under pressure. Or perseverance and patience. Or memory recall.

Yeah, these modern games ... they've got nothing to add to you as a human being.

well, I can honestly say that that is not true with me... I am one of those people who gets mad and curses like hekk when I can't pass a level.
Also, i forget so many things throughout the day.

The other things work for me though. XD

After playing through the first two levels of Flower, I wondered why people likened it to a poem. I thought it was a good game and exciting in a way, but not increadibly emotional.

Now that I've finished the game though, my opinion has changed completely. I'm not going to get into spoilers, but the game does a fantastic job of setting expectations for gameplay/experience and then flips expectations. The way this was done through sound, gameplay, etc really made me feel confused and powerless. After a while though, the game changed again and it gave me a feeling of power and exhilaration.

I was surprised at how well the game produced emotions in me, and the level and vividness of the emotion I felt.

I'm very impressed by the game and the design talent that That Game Company has. This game is an incredibly strong contender for DLC GOTY. I've said it before but I'll say it again, this game is not for everybody but if you can appreciate it, its a great experience. I'm glad that are companies who are willing to produce games like this.

Flower is so powerful. Check out this analysis I wrote, it delves into spoilers for sure, but I think it's worth a read for people who've completed the game:

And that's good! I love flOw, I love Flower, I'm certain I will love what they will do next!

The feelings conveyed by Flower were particularly strong, if the next game is even better I can't wait. :)

I kinda agree with him on this one. A lot of games these days don't really have that nostalgic essence anymore. Maybe games were better in our childhood because we were kids. Maybe they're better because our minds are only predisposed to THINKING they're better. But I'm definitely open to the idea that it's possible some games now are better than the ones I loved playing as a kid.

I don't have to answer to anybody but i'm probably one of the oldest of gamers here. & I sure don't care about your responses... AT ALL. That said it's nice to see(for YOU that is) that a man can't have rightfully earned hard working opinion & thoughts. I loved Flower. I just didn't have an emotional connection. Lets just say i'm not the most sensitive of gamers... Nor do I give a number about it. How old are you? What's that I hear? Old enough not to be civilised about formal discussions? thought so.

Metal Gear 4 and Bioshock were two of the games that really had me thinking about the world in a different way. There are still games that make you think beyond what happens in the game and elicit genuine emotions. There's also something to be said for some games being fun for the sake of being fun. I think both can co-exist and thrive.

When I first read the headline, I thought Jenova was taking a break from games so he could explore his own feelings, like he was going on an inward journey to "find himself". Then I thought that maybe it meant he didn't want to play anymore new games because he was feeling like a soulless robot and wanted to explore these "feelings" that real people get to experience. Then I read the article and it made perfect sense.

Anyhoo, good for him. Even if he were not terribly successful in his ventures (which I believe he is, so even better for him!) it's great to have people willing to explore new concepts.

The creator is right. Most games like most othe media: music, movies, and tv, make people stupider. Its really no different than any other medium. I like deep, provocative, and intellectual media. Why? Probably because I am intellectual and not as primal as others. I actually do this thing called reading, with these things called books. Non-fiction too, you know about the REAL world?

I was watching PBS Frontline, yeah PBS, a station that has SOME intellectual stuff and the episode was called "the Persuaders" or something like that. A big time, very successful pollster was talking about how people exist and interact in life. He said that people really don't think as much as they believe themselves to. He said that 80% of how people act in the world is base emotion and the rest is the intellect. (He said he was being overly generous.) Now tell me, how people are really any better than animals?
You can watch the episode here. Its and eye opener.
