Resident Evil 5 Producer Jun Takeuchi tells MTV Multiplayer that the demo has infected over four million consoles worldwide. Capcom previously revealed the demo was downloaded 1.8 million times during its first week on Xbox 360, but the latest figure incorporates the PS3 numbers and downloads in the month since.
Takeuchi also took a moment to talk about concerns brought up by those who played the demo. He states that the staggered couch co-op split-screen was designed to prevent the lead characters from standing in "one column." He continues that people will understand the controls better once they have the full game, and he says they'll respond if any racism issues come up at a later date. RE5 finally shambles onto consoles next month.

You would get good at the game because you'd quit playing it like a shooter and more like an action game where you just so happen to have a gun.

So I need to buy the game before I will "understand" the controls? Wasn't the demo supposed to give me an idea of the what would be indicative of the final product? The fact is that Capcom is trying to spin this idea that these controls somehow improve the experience of the game. In my opinion there isn't an excuse for not allowing the player to move and shoot at the same time. It worked for the last iteration because it was radically different than every game in the series before it. Now, we as gamers expect the same evolution we got from 3 to 4 but in reality have been given the same game with co-op and a prettier coat of paint.

That is what I was thinking as I read that...
I also tried the 'co-op' with my cousin this weekend on his 360... It didn't work to well. You might say that the demo was immediately deleted, and we got on Halo 3 and started shouting at random people in the colorful rainbow world that is halo. We felt much better...
Then we played some Toejam and Earl on his Wii.

Why would you be more forgiving of RE4 if the controls were dated by those standards even at the time (hell, games in 2000 allowed for run and gun)? You're simply not supposed to rely entirely on your gun. You're supposed to shoot zombies and get in their faces to punch them or snap their necks, not run away.

At the absolute very LEAST the game should have allowed me to allocate a second weapon to the 'knife' trigger so that I could combo pistols+genades, shotgun+sniper etc.
Posted: Feb 24th 2009 5:00PM pukel said
There's that bit in RE4 when you have to protect Ashley while she turns handles to raise a bridge, and you basically end up switching between shotgun and scoped rifle every other shot. I would LOVE to have been able to allocate one to the knife button so that I didn't have FIRE-PAUSE-SWITCH-MOVE-FIRE-PAUSE-SWITCH-MOVE for five minutes,

This can already be done fairly easily, avoiding going into the menu.
The inventory screen has 9 boxes, there are 4 in a shape of the ps3's d-pad, put your weapons on these 4 boxes and you can change weapons almost instantly, sure it isn't remapping the knife, but it is still an improvement over RE4, meaning you would not have to go into the menu nearly as much.

People have to get over the racism bs. So killing white zombies was ok for over a decade. Now that the game is played in Africa, it's racism. WTF

People are not talking about how there are black zombies in the game. It's the stereotypes and certain images in the game that were racist. Journalists from eurogamer.com, Penny Arcade, and other sites have played the full game and seen some of those.

Oh we "understand" the controls perfectly, and we "understand" your stubborn opinion of how you think it adds to the game when you really just can't find a better way to invoke a sense of fear and panic.
4 million downloads doesn't mean 4 million people liked it. They'd be lucky if they sell half that.

Game's fine as is. I don't want Gears of Evil. At least, I don't want RE to turn into that. A new franchise could do that if they wanted.

That's the problem. It's only a fine game when it could be great.
I never said it had to have GoW's control scheme for it to be good. There's a such thing as a middle ground.

Is it true? Could Resident Evil 5 actually ... bomb?
Classic example of when it does NOT help to provide a game demo. I think the demo has reduced sales, not increased them.

I wish people would shut up about the racism issue. It's set in Africa for one thing, so if there weren't any blacks people would still complain.
Also, I don't go mouthin off about racism whenever there is a white guy getting shot. I mean, every WW2 game you shoot whites, but no one calls it racist (by all means, down with teh Nazis). Majority of the time, whites are the targets.

so basically this re is one giant turd of a QTE. enemies run at you then suddenly stop/slow down enough for you to input the proper button actions (shooting) and if you fail you take damage and/or die.
run-run-run-STOP-[waiting for user input]-user inputs missed shots-zombie eats face
run-run-run-STOP-[waiting for user input]-user inputs head shot[s]-zombie dies
damn you designers! i still like street fighter bi-yoches! (cept for the dlc bs)
free is better!

How is that like a QTE exactly?
Game's easy. Here's a guide:
shoot zombie in leg once or twice
zombie leans over in pain
uppercut zombie
stomp zombie's head in
use shotgun in case surrounded
You don't need to run and gun because at most you should be using two shots per zombie.

I seem to be the only black person that's not sageing this game to hell and back. First of all, there is nothing racist about the fuckin game. They made it clear in the beginning of development this virus was the end of humanity! So I gotta ask, whats the better place for humanity to end then where it started? The irony in this is amazing.
Personally if blacks are gonna bitch about a media that makes us look like savage unruly people, start with B.E.T.

It was OK that white people died in the first 3 games. No one complained when Spanish people were killed in RE4. God forbid we use the indigenous people in Africa for the setting of a game. Get over it's just a game

Hanging black people in the tallest tree and ripping their guts out while dancing and having a picnic was a game too. But honestly I don't see the fun in that as my black ass was the center of conflict.
Cops and Black people is also a game. You know when you walk out of the club with your wife and get shot 50 times accidentally? But ironically there's no restart button for gettin your chest busted wipe open in this game.
And by far my favorite game to date, Hide and Go Say, "GET OVER IT!". No matter how F'd up things were and still are little racist white kids on the internet will mock people who actually call them racist and pretend like racism doesn't exist and never really did. HA HA! Can you believe that!? Great game.
Man, I tell ya. If white folks actually had any concern over the black community and actually cared what we did, and half gave a shit about the people and we half gave a shit about yall, you guys might almost be right.
But alas, you don't speak to, live around, and don't care to associate with black folks and you act as though you know something about how we feel and think.
Jee Wiz, for folks who know nothing about black folks you people sure love to assume shit about us. Yall need to GET OVER IT!

Thanks for taking my comments out of context. I won't even justify the first comment but as for the second. I can respond to the second. Let's see in the Philly area cops have been killed at an alarming rate. So most understandably they are on edge because the next person they stop it could be there last. I said PERSON non race specific. If the area you live in is that bad is it really worth your or your wife's life to live there. I never said racism doesn't exist but it is not exclusive to blacks or even any race for that matter. As for assumption you are guilty of your own crime. You assume that I don't live around, speak to or associate with blacks. Your sure don't know shit about white people but you sure like to act like you know how we think and feel. Last comment. So how does one of the lead characters of RE5 Sheva Alomar being modelled after actress Jade van Der Water figure into the racist aspect of this game? Is this simply the black on black violence stereotype being portrayed here or is itsomething more?

as for your first comment do actually think this only happened to black people? Second in the Philly area here cops are being killed at an alarming rate. They are on edge. I'd move that's me personally. As for assumptions you are the most guilty of your own crime. You assume that I don't live around, work with, or associate with blacks. So how does the fact that one of the lead characters Sheva Alomar is modeled after Jade Van Der Water fit into the racist card or is that just filling the black on black violence stereotype? but given japan's track record with black people isnt great so i wouldnt put off the track of being racist yet or at all of that matter

I thought the forced AI partner and clunky controls really hurt the game, but I was still going to buy it because I love RE. After I read that the game can be completed in under 8 hours at a normal pace I've decided not to buy. I'll probably give it a rent.

There are times that traditions should be overthrown and this game epitomizes that. Just because Resident Evil games have always had crappy controls is no reason to keep having crappy controls. They mistake overcoming bad interface and control for good game design. Any potential racism issues aside, I found the demo virtually unplayable. Not because I couldn't master the controls but because I didn't want to play a game where mastering badly designed controls was the point.
Posted: Feb 24th 2009 3:28PM Laser Sanchez said
You're not supposed to master bad controls. You're supposed to get in the face of the zombies to punch them instead of running away like a little girl shooting.

Totally agree. The controls absolutely sucked on this demo, and according to most of what I'm hearing, they were the same controls on RE4 as well? Glad I missed this series so far, I guess..
And yes, lasersanchez, I did try shooting a few and then getting "in their face," and all I got was swarmed from all sides by zombies and the giant executioner who then forced me to do random QTEs to get them off me and revive the AI teammate ten times before I finally died: GREAT FUN. I barely got out of the first house you start the demo in! Can someone please explain, with as little sarcasm as possible, how this game is supposed to be controlled?
