Screw it, I'm taking the plunge and renting this out from work.

Now I just have to convince someone to play with me.

In all honesty the gameplay could be life changing, I still wouldn't touch this game with a barge pole. I find the way it seems to be playing into current ethnic conflicts really disgusting. You just know it's an excuse for fratboys to high five each other while butchering "towelheads", that's who it's marketed towards.

In my opinion you have to draw the line in terms of content and subtext at some point. If people are going to try and paint gaming as a legitimate art form, there has to be responsibility taken for the messages it gives out. Justifying sickening content just because the form it takes is technically proficient doesn't cut it. The Birth of a Nation was a technological cinematic marvel in it's time, but it was terrible for race relations.

Obviously this kind of content is always going to exist in all forms of media, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't actively avoid it all costs. IMO !

Right, because people that would enjoy "butchering towelheads" can mostly relate to a black male who was a former drug dealer turned multimillionaire rapper turned racially motivated mercenary. I see what you were aiming at, but it seems you are reaching a bit.

Lord Negatron - I think they can, yeah. Racism and Xenophobia evolves constantly. 50 is the epitome of the American dream, his skin colour isn't important. I just think it's worth being aware of the imagery in this game, that of westerners righteously blowing the shit out of filthy arabs. It doesn't sit well with me. Guess it just worries me that it obviously does sit well with the majority of people, and that this game will sell a shitload of copies to a wide variety of different marketing demographics (Joystiq readers being but one).

At least that whole, tired "recognise gaming as a relevant art-from, bla bla bla" argument can be laid to rest now.

:) :) :) :)

This same issue can be found under *Resident Evil 5(. Its hard differentiate what is and isn't racist in a game. If the game has immature, or even remotely racist tones in it like "filthy arabs" then i stand by you 100%. "My" only problem is that i have no intention of buying this game much less trying the demo. (That's probably as far as i will get.) Ironic since i listen to rap, live in Queens, know people affiliated with 50 and/or G-Unit etc...blah blah blah.

I've been liking everything that I've seen about this game since day 1. Maybe they will add the "officer ricky ross" DLC where you get to makes pigs fly. I wish the game included the soundtrack for download to an MP3 player.

It doesn't matter how good this game is. I refuse to reward a dipwad like 50ยข with my time and/or money.

I'll wait for something that doesn't feature an artist who makes his career out of ripping off other peoples' work, thanks.

I'm going to read Justin's review now. If I do not read the words "Fifty-cent's injuries result in a sudden fountain of actual half dollars, just like Sonic the Hedgehog", then all these years of playing games HAS BEEN FOR NOTHING.

You can thank Gears of War for encouraging 50 to make this crap. If you like Gears of War I'm sure you'll be supporting this title. As a business man, I can't knock on 50, he clearly knows what the boneheads sometimes want and he continues to make that money.

Of course, 50 is solely responsible for the content of 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand and not the designers and programmers.

Do tell, was it the actual box for Gears that spoke with 50 to encourage him, or was Fenix somehow talking to him through the image on the box? Perhaps Cliffy B called him and did a bad impression and somehow led him to get a game developed?

By the way, how much is the toll for this bridge, troll?

Bah, I was referring to the engine, does it not mimic gears of war just a tad bit? I can't complain that gears has brought the awesome duck n cover system, but damn if it does not encourage developers to shovel more games styled like that?

So, let me get this straight...
50 Cent's game, which uses Gears-style gameplay, gets praised for it...
..yet Matt Hazard, which ALSO uses Gears-style gameplay, gets bashed for it?
Tell me...how does this make sense?

Funny how people only have a problem with rap music. I rarely ever hear any complaints about the GARBAGE rock music in almost EVERY game. I'm not the biggest Rap fan but it just seems a little funny to me.

I don't understand the people saying "I don't like 50 Cent but..."

Dude. I don't like 50 Cent and that's exactly WHY I'm buying this game. It's going to be totally awesome. I can't wait to hear the idiotic justification for the action before I mow down waves of whatever ethnicity has pissed off 50 Cent this time while listening to some hilariously offensive music.

I'm not going to lie, I've had this on my GameQ for GameFly since last week, when I saw gameplay for the first time. I heard him cussing all over the place, and I was laughing my ass off. I hate Fiddy, but the game looked fun; unfortunately, I have no one to play co-op with. :-\

Got the game two days ago, played almost half through it and it really, really IS great fun. It's Gears of War with quicker granade lobbing + The Club. There are some quirks with getting out of cover, and although I'm not a rap fan the music's not getting on my nerves, it just fits. The voice acting is actually quite good and it's just a fun game. Highly recommended (although renting can't hurt).

I loved this review. I desperately want to play a game that's so bad it's good, since that's a quality I've always derived entertainment from in film, but never in video games.
