Kathy Vrabeck, a very knowledgeable and experienced video game executive, is reportedly in "final negotiations" to take a job at Legendary Pictures, the geek dream financier behind
The Dark Knight, 300 and
Watchmen.
Variety has been told by several sources that she'll apparently oversee Legendary's video game initiative. The production company is currently working on
movies based upon Gears of War and Blizzard's
Warcraft. Variety previously reported that Legendary is also
looking to purchase Epic Games.
The news would be good for both parties, as Vrabeck bounces back from
being let go leaving EA and Legendary recovers from that messy
Brash Entertainment relationship. If Legendary continues its movie gold streak and is serious about pushing into the video game space, it could evolve into a major player.

I just don't see how Gears of War could be a good movie. In order for a movie based on a game to be good, the game has to actually have a good narrative, and that doesn't even guarantee a good movie (I'm looking at you, Max Payne).
I think Bioshock could be that movie. I'm obviously a little biased (look at my pic), but it's got a really interesting fantasy element, and if Rapture can be created with care in the studios, I think the movie could be great.
I hope Gore Verbinski does a great job on the project, and proves that a movie based on a game CAN be good.

I think Gears has just enough of a story to be an awesome, if mindless, action flick.

Well, if Gears of War gets made into a movie, it'd probably be like Shoot em Up, pure action and hardly any plot. A Bioshock movie would be awesome really, but I think it would be a really hard translation due to the difference of narratives between telling a story in a first-person view to that of a 3rd person.
I mean, that's what made the game great, the fact that you yourself would have to go look for the stories of other people and about what happened in Rapture. Also, most of the really creepy scenes might be hard to re-do in a 3rd person perspective. Well who knows, maybe if they do it like in Children of Men it might work, hopefully.

We don't need video game adaptations for popular games, we need video game adaptations for games with worthy stories to make it to Hollywood. *sigh* But I guess money speaks louder.
