Carmack: Quake Live on Mac, Linux 'high on my priority list'

So, that's operating systems, but what about browsers? Sure, most of us are using Internet Explorer or Firefox but what about Google's Chrome? Quake Live producer Marty Stratton tells us that, while "it officially doesn't support Chrome" it "does actually work ... with some glitchiness." We didn't ask about that other WebKit-based browser, Apple's Safari, but Stratton said that while Mac and Linux support are the priorities, "I suspect we will get Chrome supported as well."
Promising news for Mac gamers, to be sure, and with many id insiders using Macs – Quake Live's own Marty Stratton said, "Right now I have to switch over to Boot Camp to play it in Windows" and John Carmack famously debuted the id Tech 5 engine at an Apple keynote – we're inclined to believe it's the high priority they say it is.
Check back later today for our full interview with id's John Carmack and Marty Stratton.

Lots of id news lately.

Good to hear other OS are getting some love. But in actuality all you would need is your web browser to play it...right?
Evan @ Feb 25th 2009 12:55PM
No. The plugin is platform-specific, and runs a modified Quake 3 in the browser. You run compiled code.

Hopefully the wait times go down a bit...I was number 33,988 on the queue to play last night.
David @ Feb 25th 2009 3:11PM
this is pathetic! who wants to wait in line when your number 56990?? it will take hours. what a waste of time. oh, Battlefield: Heroes will be out this summer right?

Gaming for Macs has been "high on [his] priority list" for a few years now, just as Apple every few years promises a revitalised platform for games and the usual two big distributors (EA and another) put out 3 titles a year ...6 months after the Windows versions, then the field is once again left to small re-write houses who buy the rights to PC games and take their own sweet time in releasing titles months or years after they were available in Windows.
The day there's proper day and date release in line with Windows titles (Like how Blizzard does for World of Warcraft) then I'll believe gaming has actually become a "priority" for Carmack or Apple.

Fully agreed. Hearing the same story over and over again isn't making me feel any better or eager to buy products from these companies. Blizzard doesn't say "Macs are high on our priority list", they ship games side by side day one for nearly every release they have made. This has been on a hybrid disc, and goes all the way back to the early Warcraft releases.
Actions speak louder then words. If Carmack really wants to convince people he is willing to support the Mac, he needs to act, not just speak.
Quake Wars was a big disappointment for me, because by the time the Mac version did arrive, the community had plenty of experience with the game, and it left me out in the cold.

I have an account, I have played it one time on parallels, i'm waiting for mac support!! From what I saw, the game is pro and good man! Back to quake, easy on WoW.
Beddoes @ Feb 26th 2009 7:27AM
Gah,
I wish the site had told me this before i joined the queue! Have been waiting for over two hours and I'm on a mac :(. Oh well i hope i can still download the windows client and use boot camp without having to queue up again....
SiberX @ Feb 26th 2009 5:44PM
Hey, good news! Soon, Mac and Linux guys will be able to wait in queues for ages like the rest of us!
Mitch Malone @ Feb 26th 2009 6:46PM
This is really fantastic news, I couldn't be happier!
Munix88 @ Feb 26th 2009 10:40PM
I certainly hope so, considering id's first games (Wolfenstein 3D and Doom) were created on NeXT computers which were developed by Steve Jobs and housed an OS that is basically a direct precursor to the current Mac OS.
ferby-mon @ Mar 12th 2009 3:35PM
Well, Honestly why is this such a big deal?
you have to be in queue???
it is just a quake 3 engine based game...
So the "exciting" part is that you have a pretty little system like xlive or PSN??
leader boards, friends, and skilled leveled matches..
For some good old fraggin, (honestly, thats what we want, right)
We can install in linux and windows, I think theres a MAc client too, Open arena and/or Alien arena
You don't have to be waiting in line, its not like a night club is it?
Oh i get it the more exclusive is and the harder to get in makes it more desirable, right? lol...
