Don't call it a comeback: 'Where's Waldo?' game in production

Canadian developer Ludia announced today that it will create games based on the Where's Waldo? book series. The first game by the company, Where's Waldo? The Fantastic Journey, will release on consoles, PC/Mac, iPhone and iPod touch. The game is slated for Q3 of this year and we're desperately trying to get our hands on some screen shots -- just so we can find Waldo in them.

Waldo hasn't been working the video game circuit for quite some time -- although he does have an online presence. He had some PC outings in the mid-'90s, but his most recent console adventures appear to be a couple of laughable NES and Super NES games from the early '90s. The new game will have players finding several objects beyond the titled protagonist, with up to four players working cooperatively or competitively. At least today's gaming hardware should be able to render the mess that is one of the Where's Waldo? pictures.

This feels like it should be on the DS, both for content (I'm not saying that all the DS games are "kiddie" games, as they obviously aren't; much of the recent releases have been family-oriented as Nintendo is refocusing itself somewhat, but please don't interpret that as a slight against the DS) and for the method of gameplay.

I was thinking along those same lines except the Wii was the first to come to mind. Multiple pointers could compete to find Waldo first.

How about an open world, first-person 'where's Waldo' RPG based on Unreal Engine 3? That's what the kids want these days..

Yeah! Only, you couldn't choose your own nickname, you'd have to base it on Waldo so the leaderboards would look something like:

2. Waldork
3. Waldoesntcare

Why is there a 'Wheres Wally' and 'Wheres Waldo'. Different series or region change?

Presumably region, in the UK at least it's Wally (which definately has a better ring to it than 'Waldo' IMO)... unless they're inter-continental twins :-/

Yeah I never understood why they changed it to Wally here in England.

I still remember the jingle from the Wheres Wally TV show here in Australia. I can't imagine it with 'Waldo' in it, would sound kinda homo.

Wally is the original - not the changed version. For some reason they changed it from Wally to Waldo when it was released in the US. The first books were published with the Wally title in the UK.

Waldo is where the true heart of the series lies. Wally coming first doesnt matter. Characters grow into new names and forms. Waldo is the man we need to find.

Crazy.... was thinking the other day how tight it'd be to make a Where's Waldo game.

I've been "here" for years.

This game is going to sell horribly for the sole reason that no one will be able to find it.

The NES version was hard...Waldo did not look like Waldo in that version.

Fun fact: Bethesda Softworks created the Where's Waldo NES Game.
