Speaking at an analyst meeting in New York today, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer did not offer any new cost cutting measures beyond the company's plans to lay off 5000 employees. Said Ballmer, "I don't think it makes sense for us to come back and say, 'Could we take out another $2 billion in costs?'" Instead, Ballmer stated that the company plans to increase revenues by pushing Windows 7 for netbooks (low cost, low spec laptops). The lack of new cost cutting measures resulted in Microsoft shares falling to an 11-year low, according to Reuters.
By offering a low-end version of Windows 7 for netbooks, Microsoft hopes that many users will opt to upgrade to a more powerful version of the operating system. The catch is that Microsoft plans to 'encourage' users to upgrade by limiting the functionality of the stripped down version. One example of this given by Ballmer: Restricting the number of programs that can be opened simultaneously.
How many programs? We don't know, but we imagine plenty of people will be mighty pissed when that damned paperclip pops up and asks them to upgrade.
Update: Reader Duke points out that our buddies at Engadget posted a breakdown of Windows 7 versions earlier this month. The basic version, Windows 7 Starter, will allow only three applications to run concurrently.

Oh good god, so I'm restricted to Firefox, Pidgin, and whatever development environment I have open? And I can't even test what I'm writing?
I will NEVER buy that, nor steal it, nor touch it.

Read the fucking article before commenting people. It will make you seem smarter.

How about you begin by saying more intelligent, rather than smarter?? You probably could use a comma after the word commenting as well.

Ironically, you made the third 'i' in "invisble" invisible.

How about everyone uses OSX. One version that does it all for $129.

Because you have to buy the overpriced, underpowered computer that comes with it?

Considering I have had my iMac for 1 year now. Never had a virus, never had to purchase anti-virus, and haven't ever once had it freeze, I would say that alone out does a PC. Oh and may I add that I leave my iMac on for months at a time and never have a problem of it crashes when it awakens. I have seen vista do that many times. And how many versions of 7 will there be?? I mean you cannot see that the money you shell out for software outdoes that of a macs. Also I would like to add that the typical average PC life is half of the average mac life. So then you have to buy 2 of your computers. I mean hell I dont play PC games. That is why I have a 360, so dont try this computer game bullshit on me either.

Never had a virus for my Vista machine.
It's been on for over a year barring electrical outages.
How many versions of OSX are there again? Jaguar, leopard, housecat, etc...
The only reason there were multiple versions of vista is that PC builders cried about he backstock of shitty intel graphics boards they had so MS had to come out with basic. One version of Vista is Targeted for business, then there is the home version and ultimat is for those who want the feature of both.
Again, macs being useless, they only need one version. Sort of like how customizing a mac means putting your apple stickers in different location than your buddies.
Windows 7 will have a net book version. Oops, apple can't concieve selling a machine for less than $1200, so no need for one of those.
There will be the emerging markets version which wont' see release in US, Since people in developing countries are most likely useing their PCs for a purpose and not a fashion accessory, there is no need for a mac version of that.
There will be a home and business version: again, only 4 apps worth buying on mac, and one of them are office, so ne need for a seperate OS.
And there will be ultimate features of both. Here's the thing, PC owners like choice, mac owners like to be spoon fed.
I can upgrade my pc, you throw yours out and buy a new one.
My PC doesn't come with a pretentios ass attitude.
I can actually DO things on my PC.
Funny story, my friend; a mac evangelist recently bought a touchscreen HP and told me: "wow, I've been trying to write a web app (he's a developer) on my mac for over a month, it took and hour to fix it on the vista machine"
Really it's ok that you like your cute little machine that has no software and "just works"
But some of us use our computers for more than email and making crappy myspace videos.

Well I am glad you took your time to write out that huge explanation for me. Even tho you wrote all that the picture is no clearer than it was before. Ok lets get one thing straight. Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, and Leopard...those are all prior versions of OS X. That is like XP to Vista. So when OSX comes out there are not 10 versions of it, that is what I was getting at. Lastly, Macs dont require an upgrade because of the great OS. Yeah I run 4GB ram , that has been upgraded, but other than that no. I have a pal who runs a G4 powerbook and its about 4-5 years old. maybe older, not sure. But he loaded Leopard the newest OS on it and it runs smooth. This is an example of why Macs actually aren't that much more expensive than PCs. Sorry for being a pretentious bastard. I think you're jealous.

I would buy OSX in a second if I didn't have to buy a mac to use it. I've tried the "cracked" versions but can never get the damn things to run.
Bottom line is, like my ubuntu setup, I would only use OSX when I was away from home, and would use vista or XP when I wanted to do anything real.
I am going to repost the most accurate depiction I've ever seen on the webz:
Windows is for people who want to do things on their PC
OSX is for people who want something done for them
Linux is for people that hate other people.
out.

Windows 7 Starter is a very very basic starter version. NOBODY WILL BUY IT. That's only the version that allows only 3 apps at once. All the others are normal. So quit the bitching.
