Stat-crunching accountants emerged from beneath their desks this morning with the latest tally of accounts piling up on PlayStation Network. Unsatisfied with last month's torrent of PSN stats, Sony announced today that more than 20 million accounts have been registered since the service first went live in Japan on November 11, 2006.
The number reflects an increase over the 17 million accounts boasted during Sony's CES 2009 keynote address in January, and similarly includes users across the PS3, PSP and official website. Sony also notes that over $180 million has been spent by PSN users on more than 380 million different pieces of digital content. There, now with the morning bean-counting out of the way, we're off for our morning jog though the streets of Home (there's more than 4 million of us on there now, you know).

Duplicate accounts or not. That's still a respectable number

if only they integrate the store and website as good as xbox live...
MS really did a great job on the integration. so far the PS site offers so little functions in terms of PSN integration, I could only check the friendlist status and thats about it.
but the PS Store is has a much easier to use interface compare to the market place which I like more.

Something tells me they are going to announce all that at or before E3, but we all know its coming, they would have to be some dumb fucks not to add that in the next 6 months

the xbox live party system and voice chat do work much better then PSN.... i've been buying most offline games for PS3 and most online played games on 360 now.
Also, they really need to fix the user profile, viewing other's trophies takes forever to load.
even tho PSN has came a long way since launch, but its still far from what live has achieved.

that party system works better than PSN because PSN doesnt have one that is useable in game, the developers have to pretty much make one for each individual game(Killzone2 & R2 have one)
Voice chat I think is pretty damn good on PSN its just that its not a globally used system. I'm only using my 360 for exclusives because I dont want to risk it dying out on me before its 5 years old. hell my N64, PS1, NES, PS2, GBC all still work and all but the PS2 are over 10 years old. damn shame they dont make Game Systems like they use too

I buy majority of my games on the 360, while exclusives for the PS3. True, the 360 might die out after 5 years, but those 5 years are MUCH more entertaining than 5+ years on the PS3.

They do. The Wii and PS3 don't die at an unreasonable rate and will probably still work in 10 years if you treat them right. The 360, though, will be lucky to last until the end of this generation. (Individual consoles, not the brand.)

Thats all preference... I personally enjoy the unique games on PSN, and amazing ps3 EXCLUSIVES. Unlike M$ timed 'exclusives' or 'exclusive to PC and 360'. 360 has only (maybe?) 2 exclusives...
My Xbox lived for 5months, my 'replacement' lived for about a year...
I don't think current Xbox's will live for 5 years... I see them dying in 3, so M$ can get more moniez from retards that will just purchase another one. Bringing the $300 to $500... more than enough for a PS3.

PS3 owner here, and from my experience, the global integration between the PSN and XBL is obvious: the XBL feels very smooth, seamless and it wins in nearly all aspects, except for the fact that it requires yearly membership, but to me, $50 (in some cases even less) a year isn't that much. I love the PS3 and 360, but the only reason that's keeping me from buying a 360 is the RROD, and don't give me that bullshit how it's fixed. Literally almost all of my friends back home have a 360 and seeing how I live far away from them now, the 360 seems like the only option to interact with them

well I have 4 PSN accounts(HK, JP, UK, US) I know a few other people that have 2 or 3 accounts. So I'm still going to assume that 1-3 million accounts are extra accounts. God only knows how many people signed up for a UK account to get that Killzone 2 Demo.
and is that 4 Million people in Home number the amount of people that visit on a regular basis or how many have signed in since it went public??

I've got a PSN account (via the website) and I don't even own a Sony gaming product. I setup the account for a single Sony owned PC game.
Every single person who sets up a website account of their forums just to troll also counts as one of those 20 million. It wouldn't surprise me a bit to find out that close to 50% of those PSN accounts are either multiple accounts from a single user, website accounts that aren't used for PSN, and/or forum trolls.

Efforts in futility:
1) Trying to find out the number of true PSN accounts (not counting duplicates for access to overseas Playstation Stores).
2) Trying to figure out how many Xboxes MS has really sold (not counting people who replaced their red ringed consoles with new arcade systems).
3) Trying to figure out how many licks it takes to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie roll pop.
The world may never know.

Actually I think 50% may be conservative.
I don't know a single PS3 owner who only has a single PSN account. Most have 3-5 accounts, usually setup in different regions so they can access content from different locations.
And how many of their MMORPG players have setup a forum account? How about PS2 owners with forum accounts (over 110 million of those guys)
I'm not trying to suggest that as much as 50% may be forum trolls, but when you remove multiple accounts and forum accounts that are unrelated to a PSP or PS3, it wouldn't be surprising to me to find that 50% of those PSN accounts have no relation at all to the PS3 or PSP.

I am one of those rare specimens that only has one PSN account.
I almost created an EU account so that I could d/l the KZ2 demo, but I figured I could wait the 2 weeks, so I didn't bother. And look, here we are two weeks later already!

I know plenty of PS3 owners that dont have but a single account as they dont see a need to get another account just to get a game or 2. The only people I know that have multiple accounts are people I know online and VGEvo.com. the 20 or so people I know personally all but one dont have multiple accounts.
And I know it are people that signed up on the PS boards for use with the PS2 but hell it CANT be no more than 2 million users on there. maybe 3 at the most. and as for MMO's didnt realize they used a PSN account for those board I mean I havent been on the Everquest forums for a few months but back then it had nothing to do with a PSN sign in

Me, my brother, my friends Craig, Bill, and Gene all had one account each, until just Gene got a EU account for the KZ2 demo. Everyone else I listed still just has 1 account. The way I see it, I already have like twice as much game as I can play, so why bother with another account for demos and other games.

Are you also including the European Playstation forums? How about the Asian forums? Are you counting ALL forum accounts for EVERY Playstation branded product that were created over the past 13 years, most of which are still active accounts even if they haven't been used since the original Playstation?
ALL of those got rolled into PSN as well.
Don't you find it a bit odd that in February 2008, before the forums were rolled into PSN, PSN had less than 3 million users, and just a few months after rolling those forums into PSN they suddenly have 20 million users?
Let me put it this way:
February 2008 = 2.9 million PSN users
March 2008 = Playstation forums merge with PSN. Forum accounts now count as PSN accounts
June 2008 = 10 million PSN users
Come on. The math on this is rediculous. PSN accounts are being created at more than double the rate of Playstation system sales.

Akai they are JUST counting the OFFICIAL Playstation forum Account over the entire boards. NOT the SOE forum accounts that have NOTHING to do with PSN at all

That's a very good point. I assume XBL noted a similar bump when the Japan-only RE5 demo popped up a couple of months ago.

When Sony released similar numbers several weeks ago I remember the big stink was that you could create an account online without having a PS3 or PSP so the numbers seemed less than legit when compared to XBL numbers. And yet you can create accounts on Xbox.com just as you can with Playstation.com so who's being honest here? I guess neither of them. However, I would suspect that of that 20+ million that more than half are actually playing games online, buying stuff on the PSN Store and doing the cabbage patch in Home.
In the end these numbers don't mean squat unless people are actually using the accounts and taking advantage of being able to do most everything you want on the PSN for free.

Does it really bother you that much when you boot up NXE? I know how difficult it is to press up on the D-pad that one time to access the desktop, but considering the "ads" in question are usually pretty relevant (i.e. demo and content releases) to XBL users' interests, it's not really much different than logging onto the PSN store. They've got ads on the front page of that too and, guess what?, they're also usually relevant to PSN users' interests as well!
