Stat-crunching accountants emerged from beneath their desks this morning with the latest tally of accounts piling up on PlayStation Network. Unsatisfied with last month's torrent of PSN stats, Sony announced today that more than 20 million accounts have been registered since the service first went live in Japan on November 11, 2006.
The number reflects an increase over the 17 million accounts boasted during Sony's CES 2009 keynote address in January, and similarly includes users across the PS3, PSP and official website. Sony also notes that over $180 million has been spent by PSN users on more than 380 million different pieces of digital content. There, now with the morning bean-counting out of the way, we're off for our morning jog though the streets of Home (there's more than 4 million of us on there now, you know).

No doubt. It's flashy and neat to look at it, but it's much less intuitive to use than the old blades. Half the time I just end up hitting the Guide button to bring up the mini-blades. They're easier to navigate than the normal dash.

Yes, Kola, 90% of the time they are exactly the same as the hated ads on XBLM and the NXE, picture links that go to game content (with the exception of the occasional T-Mobil ad or whatever that is easily ignored.)

I think the difference is that all the PSN ads are contained within the store. I think most people are fine with that because it is a store. They make sense there and if you don't enter the store then you will never encounter them. The 360, OTOH, boots you straight to one of the dashboard sections that is essentially nothing but ads and you have to navigate past ads all the time just get to your stuff (unless you use the mini-blades, which is another reason I like using them). There is a pretty substantial difference in how they are handled and it is a bit odd that the free online system handles them the way you would expect the pay system to handle them and vice versa.
That said, they don't bother me that much. Though I wish they would add a setting where you could set which section would be "home" when you boot. That way we could set the "My XBox" section as home.

Not to mention over 110 million PS2 owners who only need a forum account to be counted, despite having never accessed PSN from their console.

When on the forums you have to link your psn account to the forums, why would ps2 owners do that when there isn't psn on the ps2? I know all the new people that join the forums have to create a psn but how do old accounts have any effect on the number?

Too bad they're not getting $50 a pop out of those. That'd really help the old Sony bottom line these days...

As far as PSN accounts go, there are 4 of them in my house (two for me, one each for my sons) on 2 PS3's.
When I had two 360's, I had three accounts (one for me, one each for my kids).
Bottom line?
BOTH systems are over populated with multiple accounts by one person.
Difference?
M$ is charging $50.00 per year (for what exactly?)!!!

I know Roto13..
Seriously, the only difference I see is --
- No private chat while gaming.
- No cross game invites.
Chat I miss, but not enough to make me want to spend 50 bucks (especially when I have 3 cell phones and a land line in the house if it's that important.).

Everyone is going off on how there are lots of people with multiple accounts. Even if you take a conceivable worst case of 50% of them being duplicates, that leaves 10million. If that's true, then Sony has only averaged $18 per person in over 2 years. Its no wonder they lose so much money.
I believe that MS last said they had 10million Live accounts. Let's guess 1/4 are Gold (at an average of $40/year [lots of people hunt down the $30/10mo. cards]) Then MS has made $200 million in the last two years, not even counting all the DLC.
People may complain that they don't want to have to pay to play online, but it does make good business sense.
