The Consumerist reports that an Xbox Live user identified only as "Teresa" was supposedly banned from Xbox Live for identifying herself as a lesbian. Teresa said that she identified her sexual orientation in her profile, which resulted in harassment from other players on Xbox Live. She stated that even after she left such Xbox Live sessions, users would follow her into other games and tell others to report her "because they didn't want to see that crap or their kids to see that crap."
Teresa says that her account was later suspended because other gamers found her profile "offensive." Microsoft has informed Joystiq that it hopes Teresa will come forward, so that the company can investigate the matter directly.
In a statement to Joystiq, Microsoft noted that users may not "create a gamertag or use text in other profile fields that include comments that look, sound like, stand for, hint at, abbreviate or insinuate content of a potentially sexual nature. Profiles that do are asked to change the language and suspended until changes are made." The company also stated that it does not allow Gamertags or profiles to identify any form of sexual orientation, though it is allowed in voice chat "where context is more easily explained to all players involved." Finally, Microsoft stated that harassment is "not condoned" and "taken very seriously."
Find the full statement after the break.
[Update: Microsoft's Stephen Toulouse -- an XBL team member -- has made a post on his personal blog regarding the situation and confirming that policy changes are being explored. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has also weighed in on the story, mentioning it is working with Toulouse with regards to Live -- and SCEA on its Home policies.]
Microsoft:
"As stated in the Xbox Live Terms of Use, a member may not create a gamertag or use text in other profile fields that include comments that look, sound like, stand for, hint at, abbreviate, or insinuate content of a potentially sexual nature. Profiles that do are asked to change the language and suspended until changes are made. In regards to sexual orientation, for gamertags or profiles we do not allow expression of any type of orientation, be that hetero or other. Players can, however, self identify in voice communication where context is more easily explained to all players involved.
"Harassment of any kind is not condoned and is taken very seriously; we strongly encourage Xbox Live members to immediately report inappropriate behavior through the compliant tools in the service so that it can be investigated and the appropriate action taken."
"The Xbox Live community grows daily, and we continue to explore methods and levels of enforcement to enhance the ways our members connect and have fun, while adhering to a code of conduct that encourages respect and keeps the service safe and fun for all our members."

Agreed. I really don't see what the point of harassing girls/women on Xbox Live is... And later those same people complain that there aren't enough girls in the profession. Well guess why?
@Dave while I understand what you're saying, a comment like that is part of the problem.

Ok, well I was just trying to make light of the situation. This shouldn't even really be an issue, even though she did violate the rules, but people like 333mzh REALLY should be voted down.
I'll vote myself down now.

Really? You're pissing your pants because of this? Compared to the rest of the world, getting kicked off of XBL is the least of people's issues. smh

The fact that she got kicked off of Live is the secondary issue here. The harassment and intolerance is the first. Which to me is a pretty big problem.
Forget things going in other countries for the moment, this transcends that because this effects all human life, everywhere. Homosexuals don't just have some island in the Caribbean. The problem is an epidemic.

You know what I find funny about this? You can get a lesbian banned, but all the host bridgers and lag switchers ruining Gears 2 multiplayer are still there.
I hate to sound insensitive.. but she must have done something to deserve it.
If not... well then we really need to find out how she got banned so we can get rid of all the cheaters. Because obviously it's easier to get innocent people banned then it is real problems.

What leads you to believe any of this is real?
I hate how willingly people accept "facts" because they see something on a website. I could have written that email to the Consumerist. Or you could have, for all I know. The details are very, very vague.
If the story is true, then sure, I agree with you. But there're no facts to back it up; at least, nothing that the Consumerist shared.

I totally agree BxGT. xbox live is not the place for sexual orientation discussions. Not only because of the massive amount of pre-teens online but also because you're just going to get made fun of no matter what you write... so why write it?

I'd have to agree...the rules clearly state that sexual orientation has no place on a profile. She broke this rule. Depending on whether or not she was warned to change her profile before she was banned outright, I'd say the banning was justified from MS's standpoint. If anything isn't right, it's that trolls decided to harass her and group report her until she got banned. It sounds like a couple of people made it their personal mission to make sure she got banned, and it is a shame that they succeeded.
Hopefully she'll read the rules next time. In the same way that I'd be banned for having "Heterosexual" in my profile, she got banned for having "Lesbian" there. It's not discriminatory, and it applies to all sexual orientations. Hopefully they'll reinstate her account and this will just serve as a warning to others to read the rules, and to not be shocked when a company enforces them.
(the irony of someone being banned for the word Lesbian on their profile on a service where "Gay" and other forms of the word gay are the second most popular insults on the service, second only to racial slurs, is not lost on me. It just shows you that the only place they are able to police is the profile and gamertag.)

It's an indirect discriminatory policy. By not allowing anyone to express their orientation, Microsoft is taking away the right to express a prime identifier for a lot of people people.
Realistically speaking, the only way sexual orientation included in profiles would offend anyone would be if the particular orientation expressed is homosexual. So, in order to prevent any offense of conservative-minded people, Microsoft essentially gags all homosexual individuals from expressing their identities.
Heterosexual people do not have the same need to identify themselves because people always assume you are straight, since most of us are. Microsoft is "playing it safe" by creating a blanket policy, but this policy only really affects gays and is targeted to "censor" the presence of gays.

Or maybe they want to make their service family friendly, by getting rid of any reference to sex in profiles and gamertags.
I used to play an MMO where cursing wasn't allowed, nor was any talk of sex, nor any discussions relating to drugs or alchohol. This was in a game where you smoke pipes for mana, drink wine/beer/etc for mana, and can get married. Their reasoning, and Microsoft's reasoning (I'm sure) is that there ARE children playing. Children with parents that complain, and cause media firestorms.
Do I think it's right that the few should have power over the many? No. But in reporting on this girl who is a Lesbian, the fact that so many have been banned for sexual profiles/gamertags/etc that were heterosexual or bi-sexual, or whatever, is completely overlooked. The knee jerk reaction is "oh my god they banned a Lesbian for being a Lesbian" but that isn't the case here. I highly doubt that they care whether or not she is gay/bi/straight or a furry. Their only concern here is that there are children playing, and for that reason, sexual references aren't allowed on profiles. Maybe they should rethink that policy, especially when the aforementioned kids would hear FAR worse if they had voice chat on, but I wouldn't stamp them as homophobic for it.
(Personally, I'm for the "underground" zone being a free speech haven, where only cheaters are punished. All of the griefing, racist, profane little monsters could migrate to the underground zone, and the "casual" zone could be exactly what it sounds like; a zone for people that aren't playing as if the game were an actual sport that could be "won")

I suppose you've never heard the expression, "Ignorance of the law excuses no one"?
Just because you don't know the rules word for word doesn't mean that breaking them makes you immune to the punishments.
I haven't read any rule about putting "I hate people who aren't white" as my bio on Xbox Live but it doesn't take a genius to realize it could get me in trouble.
Live isn't a place to parade your sexual orientation, whether you are hetero or homosexual, save it for Myspace and Facebook... or better yet, keep it to yourself.

Hmmm... I don't know. This will probably be overturned eventually anyways. Bad press for Microsoft so they will do something like send her some games or a year of Xbox Live to make it seem like they are sorry.
It's sad that people are still "offended" by homosexuality. Calling someone gay is the number 1 insult for most teenagers for some reason.

Well even you, Hyams, have to admit that's pretty pathetic, even for the internet. Following her to different games and reporting her because she identified herself as a lesbian? And their justification for it was for their kids not to see the word?
C'mon, idiot parents. If you're letting your kid play on Xbox Live, he's already seen/heard a LOT worse.

infact, i cant believe they all cared enough to go read her bio in her profile, and then once they caught something there they didnt like... instead of leaving the game they actually physically changed their game disk just to follow her into the same thing.
but i guess if they were just telling other's to report her for putting that in her profile, it was pretty stupid of her not to remove it. i wouldnt like one of my younger siblings coming to me and asking me they read the word lesbian on someone's bio and want to know what it means.

I personally dont agree with that certain kind of lifestyle and dont intend to pretend to like just to fit in. But harassing a girl for it. Thats just ridiculous. And boo to Microsoft for even considering to cancel her account. That just boosts that lifestyle more and makes them look more like martyrs.

We can keep playing this game about people choosing or born gay. Its funny how once this subject comes up there is alot of hatred going around. Also funny how this one subject brings hatred out of people, maybe its the subject thats wrong?
Like I said, I dont care, choose your lifestyle, I have my opinion and I think its wrong. And of course your going to bash me because "oh you hater, you discriminator!!!" but if I agreed you would love me to death right?
