No More Heroes publisher eyeing more 'hardcore' platforms

Marvelous, publisher of Wii's wunderbar No More Heroes (and its upcoming sequel) in Japan, is hoping to make a move onto Xbox 360 and PS3. In an interview with Gamasutra, company president Yasuhiro Wada said its finances and the skill level of its employees are nearly to the point where it can produce games for the systems.
"To be honest, we always wanted to make a game on the hardcore platforms, but at that time, there wasn't enough money or skill. But now, I think we're at the point where we can actually go into it and start thinking that we can actually do it," Wada said. Marvelous' titles to date have been on Wii, DS and PSP.
According to Wada, once the company goes "hardcore," Marvelous wants to develop the titles itself. "We're always thinking about going multiplatform. But at the same time, we don't just want to give it to different people to make it. We want to make it ourselves. So, it may take a little longer than we want to, but we'll do it little by little, and then go multiplatform."

I like yer avatar.
I tracked Unlimited Cruise down, it's a surprisingly fun game. I'm thinking of importing the sequel, though half the fun of One Piece is in its dialogue...

Seriously, how do you not notice that? Even if you keep your eyes on the keyboard the whole time while typing, you need to look at the screen to click "add comment."
Unless you saw it and just said "fuck it. It took way to long to string together a thought that coherent, let alone type it out."

It's just a joke/troll post. If you can bear to read the text, it doesn't even any relevance to anything else at all on this page anywhere.

Thanks Jesus I will.
They say it's going to take a while; I say take your time.
It's bad enough they're threatening to chuck more shovelware onto the wii, now we have to watch out for tedious minigames, repetitive combat, listless open worlds, and cheap quick time events on the "hardcore" systems too?
I hope they at least finish developing whatever crap they plan on laying on us this time.
Insight @ Feb 26th 2009 10:29PM
I don't like the use of 'hardcore' this generation. At all.
Its a shame that the folks who'll end up agreeing with me are folks like Sprinkles.
ice~ @ Feb 26th 2009 10:30PM
It's commonly confused with "mainstream"
offday @ Feb 26th 2009 10:37PM
Maybe it use to be mainstream. Mainstream is def. the casual crowd now, and yes it makes me sick to my stomach.
Insight @ Feb 26th 2009 10:51PM
Offday, why would that make you sick?
I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'd be a little disappointed if the recent influx of games catering to the more casual audience actually had any effect on how many gamers' games we'd be getting.
It hasn't. At all. Whatsoever. So there's nothing to complain about - unless, of course, you can't handle the idea of an audience other than yourself having fun with video games.
The only thing dumber than calling an entire console hardcore or casual or some shit is to hate on an audience who happens to like games that were clearly made for them and not for you.
Evan @ Feb 26th 2009 11:28PM
"Hardcore" is bull, it includes games with barely-interactive quick time events, regenerative health systems that make it difficult to die, and in general, push the player through the story at a predetermined pace regardless of the player's skill. The Wii has more difficult, skill-based, gamers' games on its virtual console than the PS3 and 360 combined!
offday @ Feb 26th 2009 11:35PM
"The Wii has more difficult, skill-based, gamers' games on its virtual console than the PS3 and 360 combined! "
Well duh. Those games were from a time when games were games. The golden age.
offday @ Feb 26th 2009 11:37PM
I'll agree that the casual market has ruined gaming...yet. But if you think it hasn't effected the "real" games at all, then you're crazy. I think Sony and Microsoft are still catering to the real gamers, but as for Nintendo, I'm starting to lose hope.
tmacairjordan87 @ Feb 26th 2009 11:37PM
"The Wii has more difficult, skill-based, gamers' games on its virtual console than the PS3 and 360 combined!"
That's a little unfair don't you think? Grasping for 20 year old games to compare to modern lineups just because you can't do it for the wii's lineup.
Insight @ Feb 26th 2009 11:48PM
"But if you think it hasn't effected the "real" games at all, then you're crazy. I think Sony and Microsoft are still catering to the real gamers, but as for Nintendo, I'm starting to lose hope."
I don't think it's had an effect on gamers' games.
2006 was wonderful.
2007 was fucking phenomenal.
2008 was arguably even better, especially the holidays.
Yeah, what we've seen from Nintendo hasn't been all too impressive (or at least isn't anymore... I still think their first year and a half were awesome), but we've only been seeing more and more AAA efforts targeted towards us.
Vcize @ Feb 27th 2009 10:46AM
Insight, it hasn't had much of an effect YET. But neither did the initial popularity of gameshows, reality shows, and procedural drama crap on television right off the bat, though now that's all we get while much more involved, complex, and expensive to make shows get run off the air in a moment's notice.
Have some insight into the future. That's what people are worried about.
Microsoft and Sony have both seen the Wii's success, you'd be crazy if you didn't think that's going to influence some of their design decisions on their next console. And hot damn, if I'm forced to play next gen with a freaking waggle stick I'm going to lose it.
Popfrogs @ Feb 27th 2009 10:47AM
"Well duh. Those games were from a time when games were games. The golden age."
Ah the golden age. When men were men and controllers were frequently thrown across the room...and could survive the impact.
And for people hoping that Nintendo will suddenly "get it" and start catering to the hardcore crowd, give up. I've said it a million times and it's still true, Nintendo has always sold games to children, because the market for children's toys is huge and lucrative. You have grown up, your tastes have matured, but Nintendo isn't trying to sell games to you.

Hopefully they'll still support the Wii as well as they have been in the past. I'll enjoy their HD outings though.
Mabui @ Feb 26th 2009 10:41PM
Hopefully they won't get burned badly when they start development of their own things, especially with the overhead for high definition.
tmacairjordan87 @ Feb 26th 2009 10:46PM
Grats on moving up to the big boys and good luck with bringing something good to the table.
Insight @ Feb 26th 2009 10:53PM
*sigh* The only reason the Wii isn't one of the 'big boys' is because we don't have enough developers like this bringing games like NMH to the table. I'd be less than happy to see them go, at least from a Wii owner's standpoint. As a 360 owner as well, though, it'd be pretty radical to see what they could do with the hardware.
If they're moving up, they'd better deliver. I said that when Retro Studios made the move, and I'll say it here.
Mr Khan @ Feb 27th 2009 8:10AM
See, you've got it backwards. Most developers this gen started on the PS360, and now are moving up to the Wii. Marvelous has been ahead of the curve in this regard
Rather, they're moving down to the smaller market, which makes relatively little sense when the smaller market has far, far higher development costs and is a brutal place to compete in
tmacairjordan87 @ Feb 27th 2009 9:25AM
As I said earlier, some developers have pride and don't like making inferior products on inferior systems. They obviously like to be challenged and want to see what they can do with the big boy systems. Besides, it's pretty obvious a game like no more heroes would have sold far more if it was on 360 and/or ps3.

"hardcore" is not the term that Wada chose, that was the term the interviewer used. The interviewer also made the fallacious implication that No More Heroes would have done better on 360 than on Wii

2006 called, they want their bad joke back.
D-5 @ Feb 27th 2009 9:48AM
This particular news item has pretty much NOTHING to do with No More Heroes or the upcoming sequel. Did Joystiq really have to namedrop the game for this story and try to imply that the game is coming to the 360 and/or the PS3? Which, of course, would be amazing, but again, that's not what the story is about. It makes no sense.
Discotheque @ Feb 27th 2009 12:16PM
I want a Suda51 game on PS3/360
