Metareview - Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (Movie)

If at first you don't succeed ... fail, fail again. That must have been the mantra during filming of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, staring Canadian sweetheart Kristin Kreuk. Can anyone even feign surprise that the latest Street Fighter flick is a train wreck? It isn't easy following up a classic, and by that we of course mean Street Fighter: The Movie, staring the Muscles from Brussels, Jean-Claude Van Damme. Yes, we said classic. It was one of the greatest unintentional comedies of our generation.

AMCtv.com: "I much prefer the flamboyant badness of the '94 flick to the attractive, even-keeled mediocrity of this one. Jean-Claude Van Damme's stock just rose considerably."
WJFK-FM (CBS Radio) (-5/5): "As a fan of the video game series, I can honestly say that this is hands down one of the worst films I have ever seen. Chris Klein is so bad that he made the movie a comedy."
IGN Movies (1.5/5): "It may not be as gaudy or goofy as its predecessor, but it's far more boring and banal. It's a videogame adaptation that loses sight of what made the game popular to begin with: it was fun."

Aww man, i bet this movie was going to win best picture.

The market has actually sorted Chris Klein into the shit end of the movie spectrum where he belongs. Lord thank the free market.

Actually, Raul Julia will rise from his grave, loudly promote his last role, watch Street Fighter Legend of Chun Li, and promptly return to his grave muttering that even death would be a better fate than to watch this movie twice.

See, the thing is, I actually enjoyed the first SF movie. Not because it was good, it was a horrible piece of shit, but it was something you could sit around with friends and laugh at and have a good time.

This movie, on the other hand, just looks horrible.

lol, at a quick glace I thought that said negative five out of five, then laughed to my girl about it probably a negative 5...then looked again, and it was. That just brightened up my day.

Nice one...for a second there I almost thought you were serious. Then I re-read and saw the "my girl" part....and realized it was all one big joke!!

You know, I'm willing to bet that Dragonball will follow the formula of the first street fighter movie.

They know they can't make a good movie out of it. Its DRAGONBALL. This is not the kind of thing that translates well to live action. So rather than get delusional about making a decent movie out of it, you follow the patented Street Fighter: The Movie formula for transition to film.

(Story that loosely parallels source material*(camp^50)) + (Fan Service) + (Ridiculous Effects) = Intentionally bad movie (that makes some money)

And you have Street Fighter: The Movie, grossing $100 million worldwide, and it becomes one of the greatest INTENTIONAL comedies of our generation.

"I'm gonna get on my boat, and I'm going up river, and I'm going to kick that son of a bitch Bison's ass so hard that the next Bison wannabe is gonna feel it!" That is just classic, and I have a feeling Dragonball:Evolution will follow the same formula.

SHOCKING... i to actually enjoyed the first move, but i was 12 and liked all of jean-claud's movies. I'm sure this will be on TV in a week, and still suck.

It's actually not bad. Not good, mind you, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

I rented it out of curiosity and, oddly enough, was entertained. I don't think that comparing it to the Street Fighter is fair. Super Mario Bros was corny and stupid, but it didn't take itself too seriously. The Street Fighter movie looks like a wannabe action flick.

I'll stand by my opinion that Mortal Kombat 1 is the best game to movie adaptation ever.

Of course, there will probably be enough "good" (read: marginal) reviews eventually to bump it off the doughnut. There's always some reviewers that like the worst crap out there.

Variety gave it a positive review, though not raving.

Those Rotten Tomato review snippets are pretty damn funny.

that all you need to make a Street Fighter fan film is 90 min of fights featuring all the characters and their powers.

What do the people think?

Here's a "non-plot" plot that works since the characters have no real stories.

1.Underground Tournament
2.Single Elimination
3.Wacky Characters
4.Long Ending Boss Fight
5.Release of slaves or children or women or whoever was being oppressed by M. Bison and have Ryu and Ken and Chun-Li give a Thumbs Up freeze frame..

= a good Street Fighter Film

Or of course steal the plot of BloodSport and have Street Fighter Characters.

I failed to mention copious amounts of Fireballs as opposed to 0% fireballs from the first go around.

90 minutes of fights would get dull quick, even if they were great fights.

Really all they need to do is remake the first Mortal Kombat movie with different characters. Heck, the only interesting thing about this movie is that it has Liu Kang in it.

Or alternatively they could just NOT MAKE A STREET FIGHTER MOVIE... because its possibly the worst choice of videogame ever for a movie, let alone a "potential series" of movies.

I would just digitally put a Gi on Jackie Chan in Legend of Drunken Master and stick a CG M. Bison over Andy Lau during the final battle.

They could easily copy "Enter the dragon" Stage a tournament and then never even bother having the fights.

There are a million films they could copy actually and adapt it into a fighting game's story. Why do they always go the complete opposite way?
