It's because some adults believe that video games are strictly for kids. They don't play them, so why would other adults play them.

It's a double standard really. If movies have nudity or sex, it's art or it's tasteful, but if video games do it then it's just perverted and disgusting. Maybe the fact that hollywood is so in love with politics. Those politicians are getting lots of donations from hollywood. The last thing they would ever do is call for a ban on a movie or call it disgusting and insult the very people shelling out so much cash for their next election.

I can't believe I'm reading all these comments hating on Rockstar for the Lost and Damned scene.

Guys, listen:

It's a dick.

It's okay. Most of us here have one. They're pretty awesome. Just because a game shows a johnson, and NOT boobs doesn't mean you have to hate it. That is really juvenile and stupid. Get over it.

Haha wow are people really worked up over GTA's penis shot? If so, don't watch The Watchmen! One of the heroes walks around with his penis dangling about for most of the movie.

They just don't want to be playing it with their friends and have that awkward silence.

"......."

and then the one who is most questioning his sexuality yells.

"That's so gay!"

and everyone else joins in all the while furiously trying to skip past the cut scene.

Oh, gamers.

I can see sex being a geniune game element in MMOs but I honestly don't see where it fits as more than shock value in single player games. Games are about interraction and mechanics and thowing a sex scene in there really doesn't do anything interactive that ads to the experience...i think thats the problem.

I mean, it would be like watching the original 'Gone in Sixty seconds', and sometime during the chase scene the guy pulls over to screw someone.

Videogames need to mature before a sex scene can be seen as anything else more than shock or goofy.

If used properly, it can further the story, so for any heavily story based game with strong characters (most RPGs for example) it CAN be a good thing (if done properly), which I think is pretty much what she's getting at.

But what about the story. You can't tell me out of a group of 4 - 12 people on an epic journey 2 of them aren't going to find love and engage in coitus. If you spent 1 month to 1 year trying to save the world with some of your best buddies and succeeded, you wouldn't try to get it on with the girl you met half way through your adventure who's really good at healing.

The fact that the journey must be "epic" is immature.

How about being manipulated (or, manipulating) through sex into something you (your character) might not otherwise do. Here's hoping for Alpha Protocol to pull this off.

"Videogames need to mature before a sex scene can be seen as anything else more than shock or goofy."
That's how they come off in most films, unless sex itself plays an integral part of the story (which is rare). But yes, we do need "Crash, the Game". It would be a lot like your example for Gone in 60 Seconds...

You make a good point, Shagi. It really doesn't help the medium in what the medium is good at (though we could go the lists of countless flash-powered porn games out there), and is often only used for shock value

There's no real reason not to include it, but to desire for more sex in games is simply a small part of the growing idea of "games as art," an idea which, like the industry itself, is being severely shaken right now

What's the difference between an MMO and single player games that makes sex make more sense in one than the other?

In an MMO you would have meaningful relationships/interactions behind the sex with an intelligence capable of making it an emotional experience. Sex really only works on an emotional level when two emotional being are involved...I think anyways.

What makes it even more difficult is how games have really been starting to try and tell the story during the game without cutscenes. If they made the sex interactive media outlets would flip the shit, but if they made it a cutscene it might disrupt the flow. Also I really agree with Pimliconite, not all sex is about deep engaging love, James Bond had sex with almost every girl ever in his movies, but he never loved them and most of the time he got some info or something out of it.

There are more emotions to sex than just love. Pressing buttons however to please a non-existant partner doesn't convey any of those though.

The focus of games is too simple most of the time to introduce any meaningful sex scenes other than to point out "This character has sex". The emotional perception of the someone viewing a movie is manipulated via the story, the emotional drive in a game is provided by the gameplay, yet gameplay mostly consists of killing something and its hard to fit a meaningful sexual relationship in there.

Games could do sex well, when they become deeper experiences with deeper goals other than just "winning" , till then the best we can hope for is a naked body part to giggle at here and there.

you know everyone is sharing their opinions and stuff on here, but honestly, i don't know what to think....i don't know if it's a good or bad thing, on one hand you have the fact that games could become more respected, on the other hand it might get criticized more for it and people won't realize that a dramatic storytelling epic can come from games because it takes more than two hours of play to get it, which people don't have the attention span for, so, i have no idea unless it happened

It's all about context. We wouldn't want it to become like the violence gold rush of the 90's, but If it's in a proper context it can be done right and tastefully. It's also of note that since movies aren't interactive, obvious issues arrise whenever the concept of a "boink button" arises.

Still, I don't think there is "too little sex" in videogames. Maybe it's because there's a lot of it everywhere else, but no, I don't really think more is needed. And I especially think we don't need more below the belt nudity. I think I we can live without it.

ost sex in movies are just a chance to flash a nipple, or something. It's all cheap titilation that attempts to distract the audience into believing in the shallow relationships on show. It becomes a little pointless once you're past the age 10 and you've found porn.

Rather than focus on the body image, reasoning behind the show of flesh should be the primary aim. Encouraging the audience to truly believe in the character, the universe and the story, would make any controversy over a floppy penis or boob look like a silly non sequitar, know what I mean. Less Bangbros, more City and the Pillar or Last Exit to Brooklyn.

Jack Thompson saying MSNBC is part of the video game industry in 3...2...1

I'm glad MSNBC is now opening up to the sex side of video game. Sex is not evil and it's all cool when video game show something nasty. Japan has a lot of sex video game but Japanese government don't get all hypocrites on those (well, there were some incident where sex in video game get censored to a degree).

Consider movies for a moment. When they were in their infancy they were nothing but silent cartoons, comedic, laughable, and immature forms of entertainment. But there were milestones along the way: Gone with the Wind, Ben-Hur, A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner, etc. At one point (I don't know when), there was the first nude and/or sex scene. Now, sexuality on-screen in an R-rated movie is no big deal, and most people don't make a stink about it.

Videogames could follow the same path if both gamers and non-gamers alike would mature along with it. The problem with most gamers is that most of us are immature (just read a bunch of the above comments!), and non-gamers don't perceive videogames the same way they do movies. Until that happens, games like Mass Effect or The Lost and Damned will always receive negative press.

I look forward to the day that games explore serious dramatic themes (and sex) without sacrificing gameplay. Final Fantasy VI did a good job...now let's see some more!

It's not as if sex scenes in films are awkward and embarrassing and usually completely superfluous, so now we want the ghoulish motion-capture and uncanny valley faces of our video game characters to nakedly grind and cavort in a very mature and tasteful way. There's no way this could turn out badly!

I have no issue with sex in games - so long as it is relevant and integrated in a tasteful way. Frankly, I am not the type of person that enjoys having sex shoved down his throat in every type of media, so it's nice that videogames are mostly free of it (although its depictions of women in general are laughable at best).

As for those Bible-thumping jerkoffs that want everyone to "please think of the children": do your research, and if you find a game your kid wants has objectionable content in it, then don't buy it. The ESRB doesn't do a perfect job (I've written academically on them) but their guidelines are actually much stricter than film ratings. Everyone wants an excuse to not be a good parent these days. I say, stop having so many kids if you're too stupid and lazy to raise them properly.
