On March 2, Microsoft will no longer offer repair support to users of the original Xbox console. Owners who (somehow) still have an Xbox console under warranty from Microsoft will be able to participate in an upgrade offer to an Xbox 360 -- terms of which are not detailed online. Microsoft recently ended support for the big black box in Japan. Pour out a portion of that Forty folks, the Xbox is no longer supported by Microsoft. Sure, most will tell you Microsoft stopped supporting the original beast on November 22, 2005, but those people would be ... no, they'd be completely right.
[Thanks, Mustapha]

As someone who has extensively hacked and modded a few of the old ones, I can say that it is one of the best constructed consoles ever. Apart from an occasional lens wear that the optical drives of the time suffered from in all three, the thing will run forever.
Too bad the 360 is the most poorly constructed box ever. Hopefully round three will go back to basics.

And upgrade? When's the last time Sony or Nintendo and an official upgrade policy? I'll bet some of it has to do with MS boosting the friend count, which will also hose up original Xboxes. If I can keep my original box, and maybe get an Arcade for $100, I'd probably pick one up. Since I'd use it mainly for Netflix streaming, it would be the same price as a Roku box.

We salute you, you giant black box of murder and passion and love love love. Please, when you get to heaven, tell God we want sequels to Advent Rising(without bugs), Phantom Dust, and maybe another Oddworld game.

That thing was a tank. I guess they can't support it forever though.

I'll always remember the warning that came with it, warning you that it can injure someone by falling on them. Awsome. That thing was a beast compared to the 360.

Here here, most notably the oddworld games just straight up don't work on a 360. Whats up with that ms? You'll support a freakin Cartoon Network game in backward compatability over a stellar series that supported your then new system? I just won't ever understand you...
If they were smart...they COULD sell an extended backwards compatability lisence. It would include hundreds of other games they just didn't want to mess with. Sure, it would piss many fans off (including me) but at least in SOME way we could play our old games on 360.

Still waiting for the Panzer Dragoon Orta fix for PAL regions. Come on, how hard can it be if it already works for the NTSC version? But I think, they made it pretty clear that there won't be any more updates to backwards compatibility... Should pick up an old tank again, so I can go back to playing the classics properly.

You know, they added "support" for Munch's Odyssey an update or two back...yeah, turns out they were just coding with their eyes closed. The game is unplayable, even though it's officially "supported."
I really, really cannot stand the way they handled the backwards compatible thing. I think now they really need to step it up, since their ending support of the original all together.
Oh, yeah, I had to re-buy Silent Hill 2 for the PS2 because the 360 tended to mix and match the sky and ground. All of a sudden I'm walking on clouds...
ugh.
