NIS America is bringing quirky (and low budget) JRPG Cross Edge to the States. While it was expected to release this March, Siliconera has found out the game has been quietly delayed. The reason? Nippon Ichi is spending a bit more time on the game, adding a feature missing from the original Japanese release of the game: Trophies. Perhaps Sony's "mandator Trophy support" mantra has finally kicked in?
Currently, NIS is aiming for a May release, although no date has been set in stone.

I may pick this game up when it goes down half the price or so.

I'm so disappointed that this isn't releasing this month!
I'd rather see it not support trophies and come out this month than it come out in may or later with trophies.
I hardly care about that crap. Trophies and Achievements are worthless in my eyes.

Wow, is that a real screen shot!? Lol, those graphics look average at best for a PS2 game. WTF
Posted: Feb 27th 2009 11:29PM (Unverified) said
still only the ps3 can do it due to all the physics involve in the background. ps2 can't handle it.

Michael I hope you don't believe in that bs. I have played the demo. That game could have been made on the PSP (maybe even the PS1).
The reason why I'm only buying it if it goes down in price is that I believe they don't deserve full price on something they didn't even "try".

Vincent, you seriously think they "didn't even try"? Do you have any idea what you're talking about? This ignorance is making me want to go back to bed. It takes just as much, if not MORE work to animate sprites like that than to bang out generic 3D models, ESPECIALLY if they are high resolution sprites.
Sry for the dbl.

Wow after seeing Prinny in there, I wonder if he can be a hero in Cross Edge. =D Graphics are fine imo. Just because it's on the PS3 doesn't mean it needs to be a glorified 3D masterpiece. All about the gameplay right? Besides, the graphics / art direction seems charming to me.

Disgaea 3 looks better to me...and I know not everything needs to be 3d but at least put some effort into making HD sprites like SF2:HD did.

Kind of disappointed this is the extent Nis is willing to go with next gen platform development.

It's really cool that they'd care.

Ah, so that's why its being delayed.
Well I would have bought it anyway, with or without trophies.

This is the first I've heard of this game, though I haven't been following JRPG's. I must say, it looks really neat, and it's on my radar.
Anybody know how well it was accepted in Japan?

try as i might, i can't bring myself to care about this game. when i play my ps3, i do so for games like killzone, valkyria chronciles, or littlebigplanet. these are games that could only be executed on a next gen system. games like cross edge could and should be done on a psp. they have no place on a next gen system, unless they are released as a download. even if the game is good, there's no way it could divert my attention from games like killzone, that could only be done on this gen's hardware.

So what you're saying is that graphics technology is more important to you than the games themselves. How can you justify the comment "they have no place on a next gen system, unless they are released as a download."
First, how do you justify the part that they should automatically be a download if they don't push the platform's hardware? Dumb. An extremely large portion of the games available on PSN wouldn't be doable on a PSP or PS2 unless you downgrade the graphics quite a bit.
Second, you're basically saying you'd have no problem playing this game on other hardware, so why would you have a problem playing it on this hardware? If you want to play the game, you want to play the game. That's like saying you don't want to play Mega Man 9 because it doesn't push the system's limits, but you'd be fine with it as long as it were on the NES.
It's fine to say you don't think it looks good, but comments like that make my head explode.

I got to mess around with the Japanese version of this game a while back and loved it. Can't wait to play it when it comes stateside with trophy support!
Also for all you idiots bashing the graphics, obviously this game wasn't meant for you. This game was made for fans of Capcom, Nippon Ichi, Namco Bandai, Gust, and Idea Factory's games.
Lastly, for those of you who have a Japanese PSN account, there is a demo for this game on the store.

I don't see why everyone must bring up the "low budget"-ness of 2d games on the ps3.
I fell in love with Atlus and NIS for that reason a while back, and i dont expect them to 3d the sh!t out of everything. Its cute, entertaining, and interesting. Doubting effort and gameplay only limit how much fun you can have with a game.
like the guy above me said, "Screw the naysayers" I'll be off enjoying Disgaea 3 until this comes out.

Sony is the one who mandated Trophy Support not the user base.

Please. It's a two month delay. Calm down. It gives them more time to make sure the translation is good and that there aren't any of the problems that plagued Ars Tonelico 2. If you don't want to play for trophies, you don't have to. Stop complaining about them. Some of us happen to find them a fun thing to play for, after we've beaten a game. I personally wish they'd patch Disgaea 3 for trophies. I can only imagine the type of trophies they could come up with for that.
