Midway is reportedly looking to sell off its Mortal Kombat franchise in its continuing struggle to keep its head above water. To put this into perspective, this would be like a family of many children putting the only child who managed to go to college up for adoption on Craigslist. And sure, maybe he only went to community college and dropped out after two years but he nonetheless represents a source of family pride.
According to documents allegedly gathered by netDockets, the company's plan for survival includes the "execution of an asset purchase agreement for the sale of Midway's Mortal Kombat franchise assets." What effect this has on that other Mortal Kombat game already in production is anyone's guess. Other goals include ridding the company of its Diesel-fueled Wheelman property, which was rolled in Ubisoft's garage in mid-February.
The publisher has reportedly set aside $3,755,000 to be split among among 29 of the publisher's "officers, management-level employees and other non-insider key employees" if these milestones are met. That's a hefty sum, though we question how thrilled Midway's creditors (not to mention former employees) will be as execs continue to gut the embattled publisher in the name of filling their own gold-lined pockets.
Update: Geoff Mogilner, Midway head of investor relations, tells Edge, "We're not going out of our way to sell Mortal Kombat." That's not say, Midway wouldn't sell Mortal Kombat ...

Capcom, buy this! Mortal Kombat -vs- Capcom! How would that not be an amazing game? Mortal Kombat characters in a Capcom fighting engine.

That combination would be really odd since the styles of the games are not even similar but if Capcom retooled the MK characters to be more like SF chracters, it could be awesome but I think many MK fans would think its too big of a change.

I vote for both of you. The crossover would be great, but a lack of competition can make things rather lackluster (see later tony hawk games...)

While I support anyone making a MK game besides Midway at this point, Capcom would be the best. Marvel vs Capcom vs MK would redefine button mashing: I need to see that.
Either way MK like Sonic, need a new parent that wont keep trying to make them become a doctor when all they really want to do is dance.

Well, T, there are other competitors for the SF franchise, unlike WWF. Soul Calibur, Tekken, VIrtua Fighter...

DO EET!!!
Seriously Capcom + MK = Giant Explosion. Also as much of MK fan as I am MK series have some serious balance issues for example MK vs DC Flash / Superman infinite combos, effing lame.

Good plan, Midway. Once you sell off MK to stay afloat you can use your other notable franchises to get back on track. You know, like NBA Jam and Cruisin' USA.

i think to Jam they would need an expensive license from NBA. So... Let`s get ready to:
- Cruisin`USA 2000
- Cruisin`Mexico - Panamericana Edition
- Cruisin`Eurozone
- Cruisin`Australia - But thru coastal cities only, otherwise would be quite boring
- Cruisin`UAE - From Abu Dhabi to Dubai, the best money can buy.

I'd LOVE for Capcom to get it. But the sad, almost inevitable truth is that one of the three Great Satans will be it the football jock EA, fat hideous ginger Activision, or French Great Satan, Ubisoft.

The fable of the of the chicken that laid golden eggs isn't there for you to ignore i, Middy. I would just hope for one of the better companies to buy it.

I agree, unfortunately. The Mortal Kombat franchise is proof of this. I'm guessing Ubi or EA will pick it up however, and the mediocrity train will roll on.

Capcom or SNK Playmore should buy Mortal Kombat just so one of them can make a storyline for the franchise that STAYS CONSISTANT all the way through.

WOW I hope Capcom jumps on this!
Street Fighter VS Mortal Kombat would be awesome.
But I think we all know that it will be EA, Ubisoft or Activision that buys it and then make the games crappier than they already are.
I'm hoping for Capcom.
But I think SNK, Namco, or Sega would do better job than EA or Ubisoft could ever hope.

Yes, we all agree SF vs MK would be awesome, Like a FF and DOA crossover would be hot - but only as a fanmade video. ^_^ (as evidenced in major viral videos created)
....but seriously? Capcom would change the system that is MK and retool it's look, and thus making it not MK anymore. I love SF, but I LOVE MK for it's look, fatalities, and characters. Even the crappy MK games...

Whom ever picks up this title they need to take it back a few steps to when the game was fun, and bloody... Most of the people I talked to who played MK Vs DC agree that the exclusion of blood in a game that was brought up on it's blood and gore when others weren't doing any blood at all was a very bad stumble on Midway's part. I know all the reasons they didn't do it but still, they have a MUCH older fan base that they didn't even pay attention to. Unless Capcom is willing to go for a true "M" or "NC-17" rating(which is what I feel is needed to keep the old fans liking this game) the whole francise will come to a stop. The "M" rating after is what made the game so popular to begin with and put it over SF as many a peoples favorite fighting game.
On another note, personally I would see a fighting game that takes from just about every other fighting game out there, a MK vs Capcom vs SC vs... vs... vs.... I think if done correctly it would be the greatest fighting game ever.
