Absolutely, this guy's a fucking douche. The whole point was to keep to PSP2 a "secret" for Sony, and this ass is trying to get his 15 minutes.

I certainly recall Kotaku.com leaking PS Home, and they recanted because they didn't mean to hurt Sony in any way. But this guy's just being a dick.

I'm personally a bit surprised. David Perry can be a little bit of a hothead, but he's a longstanding professional developer with a great reputation. I can see accidentally letting slip something like changing specifications, but turning around and challenging Sony? It seems somewhat like he became personally invested in the format, and felt burned. Or else he just doesn't like being contradicted.

Either way, I'm surprised.

Doesn't he realize that they haven't announced the PSP2 yet? If it IS real and he knows about it, he's probably breaking his NDA as well...what a dick.

Are they talking about the PSP2 or PSP-4000 (which is suppose to be current PSP with the sliding screen)?

The Eurogamer rumor said the PSP-4000 wouldn't have a UMD drive, I can't imagine how current games owners will play their UMD games, however the PSP2, is supposed to be an entirely new system- I don't know why you would want a UMD drive in the next iteration.

Dave Perry is just an attention hog with an ego. There's no reason for him to to have this pissing contest with Sony except to draw attention to his underachieving self. He reminds me of David Jaffe, except you know, not any good.

Why try to force Sony into revealing something early?

I appreciate the heads up he gave us, but why try to push it further?

When Sony and Dave feels like answering I do hope they present some kind of plan for how UMD-owner can get downloadable versions for games they already own. I do think this will never happen.

Previous PSP customers will get screwed cuz there's now way Sony will give downloadable versions for free. Kind of sucks buying UMD-games now knowing they will be usuless even at second hand sales. Haven't heard so much complains about it yet by others but I know I won't be buying any UMD-discs until Sony presents a reasonable migration plan between the old PSP-models and the new downloadable business model.

As long as Sony keeps quiet let's just hope the UMD-market will suffer...

Your migration path to download the contents of the UMDs off the internet, then run them off a MemoryStick or whatever the PSP2 supports.

Aside from Dave Perry, though, the other 2 or 3 rumors about this new PSP are saying it's just the PSP-4000 (and they say Nintendo is bad around hardware revisions), NOT the PSP2.
So comparing this to the NES-to-SNES likely doesn't work. this would be more akin to Nintendo changing the caartridge design on the SNES, thus making old SNES games worthless and the majority of owners would be unable to play new ones.

I'm betting on internal hard drive of roughly 60GB's will house our games. They'll probably put a 2GB cap on game sizes. That gives every owner at least 30 games, and room for expansion or do the Nintendo style where you delete / re-download.

My guess is 16 or 32GB of internal storage. If people want more, they can buy a memory stick which the PSP2 will no doubt support. Remember, the console makers make mos tof their money on accessories and software sales, so while they'll give us enough space for games and media, they'll still want everyone to purchase a memory stick (M2? Pro Duo? SDHC?) for extra space.

As for the 2GB size cap, that might work, but i'd prefer a 4GB size cap. The PSP has a 1.8GB size limit for games on UMD. That includes a lot of fluff for logos, sounds, etc that developers have to include with every game. You figure the PSP is roughly the same graphically as the PS2 so if the PSP2 is going to be a technological improvement (Wii specs?) then it's going to require more space if Sony wants developers to make use of the system. To put it this way, i'd rather the they have 4GB available and not use it than to need 4GB but be stuck with 2GB. Then they have to decide if adding a second 2GB memory stick is worth the additional costs or will they just cut parts of the game out?

Since we aren't going fully digital (thankfully) anytime soon, there will need to be a physical storage medium and 4GB seems like a sweet spot...

@ conor
For shame conor, how dare you say such a thing, although I know your joking,at least I hope you are.

@ misterdbarton
The PSP2 won't have Wii specs much less Gamecube specs, it will most likely be on par graphically with a PS2 or be a tad better performing than a PS2. Sony can't afford to dramatically up the PSP's graphics at this point, and frankly speaking, there really is no need to do so. The PSP already has good graphics for a handheld, so Sony could get away with only adding a small performance increase in the next gen. It wouldn't be in Sony's best interest to do anything that will make the PSP2 cost more than $250, especially if they want to compete against Nintendo. And besides, trimming the Wii or Gamecube down to PSP size, can't be a viable option with current technology.

I do agree though that 4GB, at least 3GB, should be the size cap for games. Since the UMD is already at 1.8GB, 2GB isn't a good enough increase for next gen. It truly is better for a developer to have more space and not use it, than to run out of space down the line. We'd also have more robust games.

I think Sony should be called out for abandoning the UMD. They shoved the format down our throats - and now what? The PSP2 will have a hell of a time being Backwards-compatible if it lacks the hardware to read UMDs. What is with Sony's aversion to BC?

What if all the PSP games we bought are useless because Sony abandons the hardware soon? Its enough to make me put off PSP games until I know what's coming. Then again maybe Sony already has a solution in mind...

Given that the PSP can already play UMD games that were backed up onto Memory Stick, I don't think the situation is as dire as you make it out to be.

UMD was a bad idea from the start, and Sony is right to let it go.

I hope in the PSP 2 the UMD disc is taken out but replaced with the Mini Blu Ray drives. Because a duel Layer Mini Blu Ray drive can hold 15 gigs of data and I could see some pretty cool games using those gigs.

Why would developers make a game fill 15GBs for a portable device? Think about that one...

Anyway, if Sony includes an optical drive in the PSP2, i'm not buying it. We have plenty of memory stick formats that Sony could improve security on and use so that we no longer have to drain our batteries.

But the price of the PSP2 will be extraordinarily high for a handheld just like the PS3 was at launch and so will suffer from poor sales, poor marketshare and number of users, then poor developer support which will keep aggravating the poor marketshare and number of users ala PS3.

I'm still fucking confused as to whether Perry and others are talking about the next iteration of the PSP, the PSP-4000 or a new PSP2 altogether. I'd be surprised for the PSP-4000 to axe the UMD drive but not for the PSP2.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony decides to not make the PSP2 backwards compatible, though it would be quite disappointing. I'd hope it even it lacked the UMD drive, it could play digital copies or ISOs.

One thing Sony should really do (but probably never will) is release an app store for the PSP2 and PSP if it is possible. The PSP homebrew community has created many wonderful applications for the PSP and Sony should work with them and create an official app store to sell these programs like Apple and Nintendo is doing with the DSi. Work with the homebrew community, don't alienate them. Not all of them want to pirate games on your system!!

Who challenges over Twitter?

It's attention whoring at its lowest form.

If Perry is so certain, he should sell his case of a UMD-less PSP (2 or otherwise) in a proper editorial/article. Then he can call out Koller when he has some evidence that doesn't consist of what his uncle told his cousin who used to be roommates with a top developer.

On a side note, we're supposed to believe that "top developers" would be willing to share secrets with a has-been?

It'll probably have a UMD drive, and they'll probably make it. [PSP2] The PSP may not have the DS's numbers but it's still sold very well, moreso than the 360 or PS3.

The UMD size of 1.8 gig may seem paltry, but the PSP came out 4 years ago when 1.8 gigs of flash memory would have still been quite expensive, hence a physical drive.

Here's what would make PSP2 killer:

OPEN UP HOMEBREW!!! XNA anyone?
8 gigs internal storage + Memory stick port
Allow UMD's to rip to memory
Touch screen
Second analog
Download/buy new games with any computer (not this PS3 BS)

I think requiring a computer, broadband internet access, a high bandwidth cap or none at all for said internet access, a big hard drive, and a big memory stick just to play a game on the system you already bought is a bit mad.

Why are people so against walking to the shop and paying money for a thing which is yours, forever, and that you will always have access to no matter what. No extra hurdles, no extra costs, you just pop the disc or cart in and go.
