At 6:36pm PT on Saturday night, Halo 3's 1 billionth match went down. It was a game of Infection on Foundry that lasted a little over 3 minutes, and we imagine all those involved are incredibly proud of how far along Bungie's baby has come. To put it in perspective, that's 2,023,153,340,764 seconds (64,109 years) of total matchmaking playtime. That's like 3 multiplayer searches in Gears of War 2.
Another fun fact: Bungie offers that Halo 2, a game that has topped the original Xbox Live leaderboard since its release 4 years ago, has served a total of 798 million games. Halo 3 released on September 25, 2007.

From a gamer that owns every video game system released and has a collection of over 1,000 games, Halo 3 is TOP 5 greatest game ever created (my opinion of course). Forging maps, sharing screenshots, videos, infinite amount of gametypes and map variants on your console, Air/Ground vehicle combat, customizable icons/armor. It doesn't get much better than that.

According to Bungie.net I've contributed to 1,653 of those matches. God I love this game.

Honestly, this only really works out to about 60 hours play per year per copy of Halo 3 sold. That's a lot but it's not all that much for a game with a big online component. And it's likely peanuts next to WoW per customer.

WoW is an MMORPG. Halo 3 is a FPS. Why are you comparing their online gameplay totals? Go outside.

Never even bought Halo 3 personally. The game is just so strikingly mediocre I'm not sure how people can play it for so long.

So how do you like the multiplayer? Oh wait, you don't have it? Then why are commenting on this post?

It's not like there are that many choices on the 360. I mean, if you don't like Call of Duty then Halo 3 is about the only option. Sure, there is Team Fortress 2 for the xbox, but with microsoft wanting DLC to be paid for it's not much of an option right now (Even though I must say that, on the PC side, TF2 is my favorite online FPS).
And note I said mediocre. I didn't say bad. I didn't say it sucked. I just said mediocre, as in it is ok. Not the greatest game but just a very average FPS.
But really, average is all a lot of the fanbase needs. And, really, it's about the only option they have.

Totally agreed.
In my opinion, Halo 1 was fantastic.
Halo 2 sucked every kind of egg.
Halo 3 has as turd a story as Halo 2, but it is slightly more bearable.
I hate it when I feel ripped off and made to play MP online in order to enjoy a game. Why not have a good offline AND online modes?

Oh come on. If you dislike the game, that's your own opinion, but are you honestly going to try and claim that Halo is only as popular as it is because the players have no other options?
I for one love the Halo series, it's easily one of my favourite videogame franchises of all time, and I own a 360, Wii, PS3 and a moderatly capable PC, as well as a PSP and DS. I can assure you that my love for Halo 3 has *nothing* to do with the lack of alternatives, especially considering the wealth of other FPS games available for the 360.
I guess Killzone 2 is only popular because there's nothing else on the PS3 as well? And Mario was only sucessful due to the lack of platformers on the NES?

I'm happy to say I use xbox live exclusively for Halo 3 (atleast multiplayer wise). It doesnt seem like I'll ever get bored of it.

I love the diss on Gears 2.
That game will never see 10% of Halo 3's pride.
EPIC: learn how to make a game
