Killzone 2 is UK's 4th fastest-selling Sony title, Halo Wars is best-selling console RTS
This past week saw a massive resupply of ammunition for both the Sony and Microsoft fanboys on the treacherous European front of the current console war -- first of all, the highly anticipated Killzone 2 nabbed the top spot in the ELSPA GfK ChartTrack Top 40, and became the fourth fastest-selling Sony-published title ever released in the UK. Its first place finish in the Top 40 charts gave it an edge over number two finisher Halo Wars. You read that right, people. Killzone 2 has become, as many of its zealous acolytes claimed it would, a "Halo killer."
However, the situation isn't exactly grim for said murdered Halo title -- within its launch week, it became the UK's best-selling console RTS to date, beating out former leader Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars by a three-to-one margin. So ... we guess Halo is a "Command and Conquer killer," now? We're not sure. All this inter-franchise homicide is hard to keep track of.

Is it really far to compare an rts against an fps.Why don't we pull out the data on halo 3 and see how those compare in a week's worth of sales.

Not even close

Show me Killzone 2 on my cereal box, soda can, and pretty much everything else, and I'll show you why that too is an unfair comparison.

Seriously dude Halo 3 had the biggest marketing push/hype train in video game history. It's not even an apt comparison for Halo 3 vs Killzone 2. Now, maybe when Killzone 3 comes out we can have that conversation because now the series has some pedigree.
However, the truth is the truth and MS as well as SE tried to sandwich KZ2 in between two 360 exclusives (both HUGE titles) and they both pretty much failed at taking away any hype KZ2 had going for it. It's not to say that Halo Wars and Star Ocean are bad games but I have no doubts which game I would rather be playing. Speaking of Halo Wars I participated in a Gamestop tournament this weekend (though I had never played the game) and got completely pwned by some little kid. To top it off I had to play on some little ass SDTV and couldn't even read the on screen instructions. At least I got a shirt, wall graphic (whoopty doo) and halo wars lanyard. Everyone else in the tournament was at or under the age of 13 so I had the age advantage on them (26) but they had experience in terms of the actual game. He just had some big ass lighting bolt that he was holding on my base. Fucking lame.

OK now you are either a total idiot or you are just being an ass. First off, Sony hardly has any money right now which is why they keep losing exclusives to MS's huge coffers. Second, "Bungie" didn't have to pay for advertising as Microsoft owns the IP and is the one who advertised the crap out of it. That's why you saw it on slushies, chip bags, soda bottles and every other commercial on TV.
Don't be a tool and say stupid stuff. It just invalidates the other reasonable things you did say.
David @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:46AM
I thought Sony had enough money in their pockets to survive at least 30 more years in the business. Tho the economy is probably not going very well on the Playstation side.
ill trooper @ Mar 3rd 2009 1:14PM
BxGT: Way to miss the entire gag. You're taking it too seriously. THAT'S the joke, see? That KZ2 only "beat" Halo when "Halo" is being represented in RTS form. But it's fun to see you run around in a tizzy like a 15-year-old... So carry on.

What I'm curious about is what are the 1, 2, & 3 top selling Sony games? I tried reading the link but only came back confused...
"Guerrilla Games’ shooter is Sony’s first All Formats number one for nearly two years"
what the fuck does that mean?
The game itself is meh to me though. I'd rather play Warhawk. The guns and the graphics are cool in KZ2 and it's satisfying, but not necessarily fun. To help you decipher the distinction: taking a shit is satisfying, but that don't mean it's fun. But I know I'm alone in this regard -- I know there's tons of people who love the same ol' shooter over and over, just with more polish.
Levi @ Mar 3rd 2009 4:38PM
That polish made one hell of an exciting game, that's for sure
maxpontiac @ Mar 3rd 2009 10:40AM
Microsoft could make a chess game with Halo characters and people would buy it in droves.
When it comes to Halo Wars success, I am not surprised one bit.
Why should anyone be??
BxGT @ Mar 3rd 2009 10:48AM
I will agree with you that if this was called "bob's wars" we probably wouldn't be talking about it right now but it's still far from a bad game.

Dirty @ Mar 3rd 2009 10:51AM
I still don't like the controls. Maybe Im getting old and switching from the xbox to PS3 controller is too much for me. Although Metal Gear didnt seem too bad. Maybe its just shooters.
Its damn pretty to look at.
Trev @ Mar 3rd 2009 10:53AM
The multiplayer is great too. Mix the class combining of Guild Wars with some Team Fortress 2 and COD4's game modes. I admit that makes it seem a little more rip-off-y than it feels when you're playing it, but it's a fairly good comparison. You can rank up and unlock new classes fast, but playing each class to completion takes longer. I'm still working on unlocking the classes second abilities so I can do Tactician/Assault and have spawn point grenades and speed boost or Engineer/Tactician to built sentry guns and call in air support bots.
I wish it had a party system, but you and your friends can just all pick ISA/Helghast and be on the same faction then group into your squads. It's a little more work than just being automagically grouped, but by "a little" I mean "I have to press down on the d-pad once".
The campaign is good, not zomg reinvent the genre, but it doesn't drag and has some great battles. It isn't perfect, but it doesn't have any problems.
The Dark Wayne @ Mar 3rd 2009 10:55AM
God, digital, your avatar is terrifying
Baby J Penn (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:02AM
I'm going to agree that it is a fucking fantastic game. I'm at the very end of the game at a really hard part that I have yet to beat. I also agree that the electric gun is off the fucking charts amazing and is my favorite gun in the game. I was hoping for more pistol options in the game but I've only seen about 3 of them. It would be nice to have some sort of full automatic pistol so I could carry a shotgun or flamethrower more often. Like Night Elve I haven't played the online portion of the game either as I am waiting to finish the single player.
I guess if there could be some small complaints made about the controls feeling a big weighty (which can be circumvented by using alternate 2 with sensitivity nearly maxxed out and aiming mechanism changed), or that the player can't customize his own control set (though there are about 6 different setups to choose from), but that's about all I can think of from the single player portion of the game. It really is an awesome game in every sense of the word. Now, I can't speak for multiplayer because I haven't played it at all yet.
I like it better than Modern Warfare, World At War, Resistance 2, Far Cry 2, Battlefield Bad Company, Bioshock, Orange Box, Left 4 Dead and Halo 3. But, that's just my opinion from the recent FPS games I have had a chance to play. There really isn't much to complain about - at least as far as the single player goes which is what I prefer anyway.
DiGiTAL SiN254 @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:02AM
cool thanks for the comments guys, i might pick it up if i can find a cheap used ps3. (been spending way to much money on games as of late).

Most people complain about the controls, but then, when you're getting owned, you need something to blame. lol
I have no issues with it so far, but I haven't been playing it too much due to my surround speakers not being hooked up at the moment (in storage, selling house).
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:14AM
a lot of people are complaining about the controls, but to me its straight. no issue at all.the controls are like a mix of R2 & CoD so its no big deal to get use to for me. I think that most people that are complaining are the ones getting the brakes beat off them
Duke @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:16AM
adolson, many of us complain about the controls because they feel too stiff and awkward. It has nothing to do with getting owned - as we are all dealing with it. Don't be blind to the fact that the controls are lacking just because you can't handle something being said less than positive.
The game is pretty darn good. Other than the control set-up and feel, I have enjoyed it a lot. The online is also a lot of fun as there is a reason to rank up and points are not a breeze to get early on. I learned quickly to play the games that had each online format running rather than just team DM, as those were no fun at all in comparison. There is a certain element of anarchy to the online battles when the objectives change after each round, and that makes things interesting.
Brucie B @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:23AM
Try the Demo, Rent it to see if you like it.
I Personally can't stand the Clunky Controls. There Horrible, Reminds me of RE4, so if thats your thing you'll be fine.
DiGiTAL SiN254 @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:26AM
i believe the first words in my post were, "I don't own a ps3 yet"...
McWeen @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:27AM
I don't think it has bad controls but the only other shooter I've played on ps3 is Haze and I keep trying to use those controls.
Troy Powers (PSN: TroyPowers) @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:27AM
The multi-player is fucking crack! I've been fiending for this game since the beta ended. Honestly, I think shooters are okay. I thought CoD4 was "meh." I can't stop playing this game. I only finished the first two missions of the campaign mode. The multi-player was just calling me.
I agree that the class system is great. Being able to combine abilities of different classes is cool. It gives you a much wider range of possible characters, at the same time it makes you put in a lot of thought as to what's best for your playing style and the particular game modes you want to excel at.
Chasing ribbons, badges, and XP is fun instead of being monotonous. It's not just, "Oh, I need another 300 XP to unlock this gun." It's "I can focus on getting 300 more XP to unlock this ability, or I can focus on reviving team-mates to get that ability, or I can create a class that will be good at this particular game mode to get more points toward that OTHER ability."
Then with abilities like being able to be near invisible, or being able to disguise yourself as a member of the opposite team, it can get really crazy.
Great level design. Fun game modes. It's a damned good game.
I've heard complaints about the controls being laggy or unresponsive, but I haven't experienced any of that. Just seen a bunch of chatter in forums, and...well, you know how that goes.
Vidikron @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:30AM
IMO, the only legit complaint with the controls is the input lag. The fact that the game is a bit slower paced is a non-issue. I don't see why every FPS must be a speedy twitch shooter. That's rather asinine. After about a level or so the cover system felt comptlely naturla to me. I think overall it's a matter of getting used the the changes compared to the bulk of the shooters out there. Most shooters most faster and have "sticky" cover systems and that's what people are used to. And, realistically, KZ2 does actually control much differently than Gears. I think its the input lag that's the source of most of the compaints even if people don't realize that that's what they're experiencing.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:31AM
@Brucie: RE4!?!?!?
REALLY!?!?!?!
last I checked I could run and shoot just fine..
Vidikron @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:32AM
That should say, "And, realistically, KZ2 does NOT actually control much differently than Gears.".
DiGiTAL SiN254 @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:33AM
again many thanks for all the mini-reviews lol
Sounds good. My only concern was the controls in the first place, so it looks like that will take some getting used to. Especially since i hate the ps3 controller in general. I might just find a mod to put ps3 controller innards in a 360 controller case.
Baby J Penn (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:35AM
Duke & Brucie B,
It's a fair enough complaint I guess but I haven't had any less enjoyment because of the controls. To be perfectly honest it just controls a little different but there is anything cumbersome or clunky about them. Now, I adjusted the controls (alt 2, max sensitivity - 1 and hold and release to zoom) to make them more comfortable for me but it's not as if aiming was ever a chore in the game. My honest opinion is most gamers are spoiled brats who want to compare everything and can't let something stand on it's own and judge it as such. I imagine most people are coming from COD 4 & 5 or Resistance 2 where there is no such thing as weight and are more run and gun. If you don't like the weighty feel or the pacing that's a personal opinion but trying to pass that off (an intentional design choice) as fact that the controls are clunky or cumbersome is (IMO) being a brat.
I'm all about criticism and especially when it's justified but I think there are many people hopping on the clunky control bandwagon for no other reason than to have SOMETHING to complain about.
baby sea tuna @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:54AM
I'm not the biggest fan of the controls either, but I'm getting used to them. Actually, my real beef isn't with the controls...they're sort of a combination of Halo and CoD4, whch is fine with me, I just wish I could customize which button does what...my real beef is more with the controller itself which is great for RPGs and fighting games, but FPSs...no so much.
Still, KZ2 is shaping up to be a very intense, very fun game.
Duke @ Mar 3rd 2009 11:58AM
Johnny, was there a need to come out with that approach right now? Calling me a brat because I don't like the feel of the controls? That was a bullshit way to approach this. Why are you so damn defensive about PS games that you will quickly turn to calling names because someone gives their opinions? I said i like the game, but not the controls feel - and I use the same control setup you listed. The game is great, but stop acting like if you think something is perfect than the natural law suddenly dictates it is in fact perfect. (I remember you pulling this with people who didn't drool over LBP.)
I see no need for you to call me a brat for having an opinion that doesn't match yours 100%. Also, who the hell are you to decide that I am making something up to complain about? That was a real dick comment to make.
End User @ Mar 3rd 2009 12:15PM
I know... geez... I feel like such a "brat" for wanting to make my right "TRIGGER" button act as the TRIGGER on my gun.
For that, and for not appreciating the glory that is a dead zone the size of Texas.
Yeah, I'm a brat.
My only other little wish is that XP was displayed as gained, a la CoD4 and R2, or at least an option to turn that on and off, to satisfy the "realism" purists. (no, I don't want all my shooters to be the same, but as time progresses I do like to see the good features of old games incorporated into new ones).
Aside from that, the game is freakin' spectacular.
Brodie-san @ Mar 3rd 2009 12:39PM
@DiGiTAL SiN254
You're going to have issues getting off the first level with a 360 controller as there are certain things that need require the use of six-axis movement.
My advice: stick with the PS3 controller and try some of the alt-button layouts.
See you online (maybe ... if you pick it up)
:)
