As reported last week by GI.biz, the NPD Group revealed THQ's new RTS, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, had topped PC sales for the week ending February 21 -- knocking World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King down to second place in the process. We'd analyze the data ... only there is no data to analyze; the NPD Group didn't include unit sales on its list. So, the lingering question remains: Is Dawn of War II a new trend in PC sales or was this simply a surge for a new -- and anticipated -- title?
That's a question which can't be answered until new data -- hopefully with numbers -- shows us second-week sales of the game. THQ is in dire need of a cash injection after a February announcement in which company announced plans to axe 600 jobs and analyst rumblings it has a 50% chance of bankruptcy. However, after a week's worth of sales and toppling the current (Lich) king of the PC market, it is possible that the publisher may not have such "mediocre product" as analyst Mike Hickey once theorized -- and, if all else fails, it could always unleash 50 Cent.

Wow I really thought the beta was good and apparently a lot of other people did too.
Still need to buy this game.

Congratulations to DOW2 for beating out a nearly 4-month old game.

Anyway, I really like it but wish it had more base building to it.

The omission of base building is exactly why I like it. The original DoW was awesome, but I think DoW2 takes it to a whole new level. Now I can focus on combat and not have to interrupt my attention to the battle to go back to my base and build something.

I'm confused.. don't NEW big title PC releases usually knock the latest Blizzard title out of first place the week they come out?

Dawn of War 2 was the first game that doesn't have a "Sims" or "Lich" in it's name to claim the top spot in four months.

I got my copy a few days ago, I certainly did not contribute to it being number one for that month. Let's wait till next month to see how it does. The online is really good except for the stupid match making which pitch noobs against pros.

Dawn of War 2 also tops the Steam top sellers' list, and you'll probably never get that data knowing Valve. Anyway, NPD numbers have been largely irrelevant for PC games for a while now, no need to expect too much from them.

When Steam has this for half-price, i MIGHT get it. As a huge fan of the Dawn of War games and many other RTS games, removing base-building and base-defending chops out about half of whats good about the game. Not to mention the game is terribly unbalanced.

does this include DoW from steam and retail. Plus was Lich King sales from only retail or do they include Online upgrade

No they don't include online sales, but; Steam has already released their sales reports and Dawn of War 2 holds the top spot amongst Steam games. Dawn of War 2 also holds the top spot over direct2drive sales as well.

So wait, are you saying the first weeks sales for Warhammer beat the first weeks sales for Lich King? Cause I find that really hard to believe...
If what your actually saying is a 4 month old game finally fell out of the top stop, well whooptie fricken doo.

Funny, this was the first game other than the Sims 2 expansion, to knock Return of the Lich King and the Sims 2 expansion off the top spot. I assume that that's an impressive feat, despite the age of Lich. Remember World of Warcraft sells madly crazy.
However, when a Blizzard game is finally toppled, the Blizzard fanatics come out of their caves and begin reciting "age" and "consistent number one" status. It seems that any game that beats a Blizzard product is considered heretical according to Blizzard's followers.

Maybe now people will stop playing wow.
That game has horrible controls, it is a dumbed down version of an MMO. I felt like I was playing Guitar Hero: Kids Bop edition when I was playing WoW. Giving dudes more hit points than me does not magically make the game more complex. Let's see, Star Wars Galaxies has better graphics than WoW, and that is saying alot.
People get into it because they felt there was not much else, and then once they got into it, they got hooked. It is just like the Sims and Mario Kart and Crack.
Now they have a reason to play a real game.
WoW = pwned!
