In hopes of bolstering its PSP PSN download scene, Sony plans to expand its digital catalog to include non-PlayStation console titles. "In general, there's a lot of discussion about [publishers'] back catalogs that will finally find its way to PlayStation Network in the back half of this year," said SCEA's John Koller to MTV Multiplayer. That would include both the promise of more PSOne titles (as North America seriously needs to catch up to Japan in that regard) and pre-PSOne retro titles.
Despite becoming more Virtual Console-ish, this expansion of the PSP side of PSN will also offer more portable versions of PS3 downloadable titles, such as PixelJunk Monsters and the already released Super Stardust Portable. Koller says that Sony's studios are preparing more internally developed download-only titles. This strong focus on digital distribution makes us wonder if the whole "dropping UMD" rumors are true.

I'll download more PSP games when I can play them on my PS3, with my nice TV and my nice stereo.

I've got a 2000. Trying to play a game on my TV with the PSP tethered to my system is a pain in the ass. I'd just like them to start treating PSP games like PSN games where you can play them nativity on the PS3 and then also transfer them to your PSP if you like.

you mean we'll get Resident Evil and Metal Gear from the japanese PSN? Maybe bring Driver 2 over to NA?

Sony needs to take drastic action to have any chance of overtaking Nintendo. I doubt Sony is satisfied with being in 2nd place with the PSP and in 3rd place with the PS/3.

You mean last in both markets?
I don't think they will overtake in either but gawrfammit they better try by bringing us a good bunch of games.

You know what, UMD or not UMD what matters is the quality of the games, so that is what Im going to look forward in the possible PSP2

I'm pretty much required to comment on any post relating to the PSN and it's lack of classics, but I've pretty much used up everything I had on other posts (long, long ago). My hope, by the way, has gone with those posts into the lost annals of Joystiq...
so, yeah...Sony...get to it...eh..

If the new psp doesnt use UMD then how would the new PSP owners play older psps games that they missed out on? I really doubt they will port every UMD game that is out right now for download.

It's not hard. They wouldn't need to be ported, just emulated.

Damn, when I read "non-PlayStation console titles" I almost thought that would mean games from other consoles, i.e FF6.
Oh well.

6 came out on PSOne, just as a port. FF6 is never coming to virtual console, and not this service either. SE would rather upgrade it like FFIV and charge $40 for it on DS.

Its nice to know they want to start supporting the PSP 2 years after they abandoned it. Ive been doing what they are proposing for a while now. I had no choice if I wanted to enjoy it.

So, their plan to revamp the PSP is to release more PS1 games and add a "classic console" lineup to the PSN? Hasn't just about everyone with a PSP been able to do this and more for free via CFW for the past few years?
Sony. If you want me to give you money, I want new original games for PSP. Like GOW:COO. The only PSP game I've ever played/bought.

FF7 on psp = me finally buying a psp.
FF7 remake on ps3= me finally buying a ps3.
I never had a ps1, so I missed out on this game. being able to play it on the go or in current gen graphics would probably be the only thing that will get me to play it too.

I'm not opposed to having PSN have more retro games on it but at the same time, but at the risk of sounding unpopular, I didn't purchase the PSP to play retro games no matter the nostalga value associated with the game. I bought the PSP to play PSP games that use all of its processing power, graphics cabilities, and so forth.
If I wanted to play retro games, I'd get my MAME emulator out. I guess I'm a little puzzled at the way Sony is thinking of things lately; you have a huge gaming machine with lots of capabilities but instead of focusing on the types of games that could be made with the system (read that as making new games), it wants to focus on re-releasing what's old.
For me, I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Give me something new please.
