It's the very first screen of the original, which had a beautiful background as far as pre-1990 NES games go.

I'm so glad the DS version was canceled.

Very pretty :)

It's nice to see developers putting a little effort into 2d graphics.

I'm guessing this, Wario Land, and Muramasa? Are there more?

Yeah, there are those, and then there's also Cave Story for one more.

There are probably plenty of other 2D games on Wii. 8-bit.artist is just crazy.

Super Paper Mario is a beautiful and lengthy game on a 2D plane. Every Wii owner should get it.

cave story is not hand drawn. and since when do 2d games have to be hand drawn? of course there are more 2d games on wii, im talking about the ones with the hand drawn art style.

The three titles 8-bit.artist is referring to is:

1. Muramasa: The Demon Blade
2. Eternity's Child
3. a boy and his blob

Hmm...I also think I somewhat understand what 8-bit.artist is getting at when he says hand drawn game. Usually this would be something you could tell just by looking, so I don't quite know how to explain it. But...just think of the look of a handdrawn game as being comparable to a "high quality 2D art still," drawn by highly skilled artists of course. At first glance at a screenshot from such a game you'd think it was some high quality art piece that took hours to do in photoshop, and wouldn't expect it to be a game. It's a crude explanation but it should work, if not, then oh well.

Neither Cave Story or Wario Land for wii belong in the same group as these games. Cave Story for one looks pixelated and that doesn't resemble handdrawn. Wario land for wii could actually belong in that list, it does for most part look hand drawn, but...it is a big step down in beauty when compared to the above three games.

I'd say these guys definitely get what the basic appeal of the game was. The scenes inside the house, with multiple rooms separated by ladders, definitely capture the intriguing oddness of the fragmented way worlds were constructed in old 2D games.

There's tons of room for improvement over the original here. I would hope that they've given the exploration more of a purpose, without relying on lots of linear puzzle sequences.

I'm not trying to bash the Wii here, but when 70% of graphics are hand drawn, used as foreground or background visualization, it's going to look very good and sharp.

A 2D game, no matter how pretty, just isn't that big of a deal. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption however, is a game that shows the Wii is capable of good graphics.
