Confirmed: NXE update on Xbox 360 game discs
There was a rumor floating around today about NXE shipping on Xbox 360 game discs (via MCV) and, as you can imagine, we were surprised. So we put in a question to Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, who confirmed that Microsoft has begun including NXE with Xbox 360 games.
As to whether Tom Clancy's HAWX and 2K Sports' MLB2K9 will be the first games to feature the NXE update -- as the rumor suggested -- Major Nelson could not confirm. But, from here on out, expect the update to be included on all retail game discs.

wow so now they are forcing a buggy system on everyone, niceeeee.
Snowblind @ Mar 4th 2009 4:57PM
uh.. buggy?
Just seems to be a way for those who aren't connected to the internet to get the update.
WINterfang @ Mar 4th 2009 5:18PM
Like me for example, while I'm not gonna be able to enjoy most of the features because of my lack of proper internet, I'm still interested in being able to install games on my XBOX.
FNG @ Mar 4th 2009 6:03PM
@ WINterfang
Are you online at home or at work? you can download the update from xbox.com

I agree, it is a bit buggy. I hate whenever a friend online, invite, message, or achievement pop up comes up on screen 360 gets hung up if you have the blades open.
WINterfang @ Mar 4th 2009 7:55PM
Thanks FG, That would save me some trouble =D
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Mar 4th 2009 8:10PM
i wouldn't say it was buggy. i haven't had any problems with it functioning correctly in all my experience with it. i will say that i wish they wouldn't separate all the settings like they do. i took me like 10 minutes to figure out how to change my theme again cause i figured it would be in the settings menu. on PS3, all setting stuff is right in the settings menu, not a huge huge deal but i wish my 360 was the same.
Tiptup300 @ Mar 4th 2009 11:21PM
I wish the ps3 could listen to music and do ANYTHING else at the same time. Or at least give me a warning, I hate choosing my music and perusing the menus for my music to cut out if I just want to set the correct time or anything near that. >_>
Cj @ Mar 4th 2009 4:44PM
Reminds me of the Firmware updates on PSP games. But that was to mainly stop hacking, hopefully MS has the same intention.
MC Double Def DP @ Mar 4th 2009 4:56PM
Don't copy that floppy!
...but yea this doesn't stop hacking.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Mar 4th 2009 8:12PM
that's what i was thinking. the PSP has been doing this for a long time and it's not a bad strategy at all. now the PSP did it for different reasons but the end result is the same, unconnected people can get the update they need. the hard drive install feature alone is worth it completely, nothing like a quiet 360 (and knowing it's probably not going to scratch ur discs).
n0ne @ Mar 4th 2009 4:46PM
They got, the powah!
aaronx_x @ Mar 4th 2009 4:51PM
so i dont get it.. o.O it installs the nxe are something? (dont have 360)
Shmil @ Mar 4th 2009 4:54PM
I guess, forcing all of those people who never put their xbox online will be forced to get it. Its a good marketing move because the old dashboard, while sleek and effecient, wasn't as user friendly or appealing to more people. Now that everyone will be forced to upgrade they'll see the avatars and everything else being offered.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Mar 4th 2009 8:15PM
i personally think the old dashboard was more user friendly. everything was placed exactly where i would expect it to be placed (settings and such). while the NXE is prettier, it does achieve it at the expense of some of that user friendly-ness IMHO. it's filled with ads and some stuff is hard to find.
Graeme Q @ Mar 4th 2009 4:52PM
Tom Clancy's HAWX and 2K Sports' MLB2K9 both have the update and are first first, and so far, only two to carry the update on disc.
This was confirmed a few days ago but obviously not by MS themselves.
Suprised Resident Evil 5 didn't have it but it doesn't (or at least the Asian version doesn't)
Joe H @ Mar 4th 2009 4:52PM
It wasn't really a rumor before this either, it's been known. The reason it was figured out to be that game, is that it is apparently not booting on currently hacked drives, so for maybe about a week, you'll get your wish.
Anticrawl @ Mar 4th 2009 4:52PM
Speaking of HAWX anyone wanna join up to run through the campaign co-op? Gametag is Anticrawl.
TheEngineer @ Mar 4th 2009 5:15PM
What are your thoughts on the game so far?
Worth $60?
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Taylor Swift Defense Force, Gobot in disguise) @ Mar 4th 2009 5:16PM
better or worse than the last Ace Combat?
Anticrawl @ Mar 4th 2009 5:25PM
Honestly there really isn't any comparison. The story in Ace Combat 6 was terrible while the one in Tom Clancy may be a bit generic it is far more entertaining. The online is leaps ahead of AC6 I think, the dogfights online are incredible and there are plenty of aircraft to choose from to suit your style. It isn't all just fly and shoot though, there are a few twists to the gameplay you can add to mix things up or just force cockpit view and set the realisim high. The online is 4v4 and uses the oldschool lobby system where you can host your own public matches and join others without pesky matchmaking. Uhh I'd say it's well worth the 60 dollars in my opinion, but I'm fairly tired so I can't really put into words why. I was looking for a new experience for my 360 and this fit the bill, have plenty of RPGs, FPSs, platformers and fighters.
Also the preorder codes are not one time use, they are button codes so you can unlock all 3 preorder planes without having preordered the game. Then there are two extra unlocks for free as well if you have an Ubisoft account.
Anticrawl @ Mar 4th 2009 5:29PM
And honestly if you are a gamer on a budget I'd either pick HAWX or Star Ocean 4 out of the handful of games out/coming out recently. Resident Evil 5 is a carbon copy of 4 with a new coat of paint and co-op (if you never played 4 then RE5 will likely be a treat though), Street Fighter 4 is frustrating if you aren't a huge fighter fan and has no training mode, Eat Lead is fun ehough to warrant a rental, Halo Wars is good but console RTS's are no fun for me.
mikey @ Mar 4th 2009 10:15PM
I realize this is to force people to update their systems to further prevent piracy and stuff.
But besides that. For people who play games all the time offline. Exactly whats the point? If they don't have internet. Why the hell should care about having a 3d avatar....
Graeme Q @ Mar 5th 2009 6:50AM
I was wondering the same thing.
It doesn't really stop piracey at all. It merely delays it for a week as they've got around the problem now anyhow.
But the point of the NXE when you're offline? New skin?
I think MS are just being nice to people so they don't have to download the update and its on disc for them. Puts less strain on their servers as well I guess.
xenocidic @ Mar 5th 2009 12:27PM
game installation, i suppose
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Mar 4th 2009 4:53PM
Basically this means that you can get the NXE from any future game even if you don't have your 360 conntected to the Internet.
It also means that's 200 MB of "real" content that could potentially get squeezed off the disc. But, let's face it, it's not like most devs use that for anything other than dumping lazy, uncompressed files.
FNG @ Mar 4th 2009 6:00PM
STFU you idiot. The full NXE update is 74.6MB.
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Mar 4th 2009 7:03PM
Calm down, wow. I was half joking, and who cares, anyway? No reason to blow up.
Debikul @ Mar 4th 2009 10:30PM
I think that was more of a stab at the whole "inflate the data so it fills up a Blu-ray disc" fiasco not too long ago. Chill man. Chill.
Mirra520 @ Mar 4th 2009 5:51PM
ummm.....when i played gears of war 2 on my friends xbox (which did not have the NXE) it added the NXE for him. am i missing something here?
yolarrydabomb @ Mar 4th 2009 5:24PM
did you give him your memory card or Hard Drive?
if happens that way too.
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Taylor Swift Defense Force, Gobot in disguise) @ Mar 4th 2009 5:16PM
Makes sense. Nintendo has had that on a few discs (Brawl stands out the most to me) so its not like this is revolutionary. That just makes me wonder what could be on that disc instead.
Mr Khan @ Mar 4th 2009 6:16PM
Nintendo does it with pretty much all their big first-party titles
Its actually quicker and more convenient than their online update system, you just don't get it for a while
Biggie @ Mar 4th 2009 5:29PM
Can the NXE install on system with just a 64MB memory card? Cause that is what early Arcade customers have...
xenocidic @ Mar 5th 2009 12:26PM
no, that's why Microsoft had an upgrade program (free 256 mb card or cheap 20 gb refurbed hard drive)
i think its over tho
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Mar 4th 2009 5:53PM
well its not surprising at all considering NXE IS a system update and Sony has put System updates on both PSP & PS3 game disc, dunno if MS has ever done it before or not tho
jinn35 @ Mar 4th 2009 7:39PM
Yeah, i am pretty sure that microsoft has done this before. When i took Call of Duty: World at War to a friends house (who did not have his 360 connected to the internet) the 360 said it needed to update to play the game and then updated from the disk.
arrness @ Mar 4th 2009 6:18PM
oh great, less space for multiplatform games!
Mr Khan @ Mar 4th 2009 6:18PM
Some odd games to start it with, i think, but if this is going to be a universal thing, it makes sense
They missed an opportunity with Halo Wars, really.
ZeroCorpse @ Mar 4th 2009 7:26PM
...And I STILL don't know what damn good those avatars are.
You make them. They stand there and make silly faces. That's about it.
jynxycat @ Mar 4th 2009 7:30PM
Resident Evil 5 does not have this feature, so, it's not all retail games from here on out.
caserb @ Mar 4th 2009 8:37PM
Oh boy, so no matter what - everyone's console will have an open tray error* on the 13th month of their one year warranty!
Thanks Micros**t!
*Will be paying $99.00 pretty soon to get my second console sent in and repaired/replaced soon, and not for RRoD but the NEW RRoD, The dreaded "Open Tray" error!
Debikul @ Mar 4th 2009 10:32PM
Well open the tray retard!
caserb @ Mar 4th 2009 10:37PM
Debikul:
Hur hur.
Google 'open tray error' and you'll understand.
Google. Its your friend.
sjs2626 @ Mar 4th 2009 10:44PM
That's happened to me a few times. What I did was (this may sound crazy) I pulled the power supply out of the Xbox just enough to make it red ring (seriously!), and then I plug it back in. Worked after that. I've done it more than once.
ChomskyKnows @ Mar 4th 2009 11:37PM
great. with this plus the 2 gigs of security nonsense, now id's Rage will have to ship on twelve-hundred discs. Thanks Microsoft...
I want to play Rage with the full rez thank you. fix your space issue idiots or allow Rage to ship on 3 discs...
(way off topic)
Tuxy79 @ Mar 5th 2009 8:33AM
Good idea.
Ujn Hunter @ Mar 6th 2009 9:23AM
Aww man, I don't want the NXE on my Xbox!
d889 @ Mar 5th 2009 2:47PM
for now it is blocking the iextreme firmwares from working, the old games work fine but these new ones dont.
iextreme is patching it soon though so there are no worries :)
xboxdruggie @ Mar 5th 2009 6:43PM
I can vouch that HAWX does have the upgrade ;)
