That's right. Newsweek's N'Gai Croal – one of game journalism's most august statesmen – will be packing up his desk at the venerable (though not invulnerable) news magazine and heading out for waters uncharted, Gamasutra reports. Croal may be leaving games journalism but he's not leaving the gaming industry; instead, Croal will "pursue a career as a creative consultant to game developers" to help them reach that most mysterious of all gamers: the adult.
Croal has posted his final piece on his LevelUp blog, but if you want moar Croal, you'll still find his monthly column in Edge magazine, a personal blog at (the currently parked) ngaicroal.com and, of course, Twitter. If you had to read one piece of work from Croal's coverage of the gaming industry, the man himself recommends his investigation of the unfortunate Gerstmann-gate incident and (here's the good part, folks) "the contempt publishers have for the enthusiast press," calling it "one of the posts I'm proudest of." We're inclined to agree.
So, here we are ... from one editorial we to another, we'll selfishly miss your contributions at Newsweek but wish you the best in the new gig.

I didn’t expect most Joystiq readers to understand the credible exposure he brought to Video Games, the Industry and its Journalism but this is fucking incredible.

really. people are so hung-up over this RE5 and racism issue. so what he found racism in RE5. obviously he's not the only one, and it's no reason to go wishing the dude ill. its kinda chilling that gamers are so critical of those who find racists overtones in certain aspects of videogames.

I agree about the racism angle. Ignorance and racism are not always the same thing. I honestly think that the developers in Japan were ignorant of connatations to what they had created.
But make no mistake, Internet Blogs DID help do in EGM. Ziff's mis-management helped too, but Game Blogs made print mags so much less relavent. He was right on that count. That does not make game blogs the bad guys. It's just the way things have worked out.

Over-rated hypocrite. Bloated on his own self importance.
Pure hack.

Yeesh, some of you guys have a whole lot of vitrol for a man who's biggest mistake was saying that he didn't like seeing his brothers and sisters getting killed in a videogame. Admittedly, I didn't agree with him on that point and I think he took it too far, but I thought he brought a lot positive attention to the industry, and has dilluted some of the widely accepted falsifications of the general public (Kids only play videogames! Videogames are rotting our minds!). He is the first editor of a mainstream, non-technical publication that I've ever noticed.

I was watching a history of video games type thing and he was one of the experts cited. He really knows a lot about the history of the industry and everything, but whenever he spoke about his own feeling about particular games or whatever, I didn't agree with his opinion very often.
Once he came out with the RE thing I dismissed him as a person trying to build his own personal renown on a fake indignation about a racial non event. he pretty much got put in the same category as al sharpton in my opinion.

N'Gai sounds a bit full of himself in that final piece for Level Up. It's funny because I rarely found his work interesting. The worst was all that "Racism in RE 5" stuff he was trying to create which just seemed like he had a previous personal issue with Capcom . What's worse is how most everyone believes anything the media says and that led to people immediately thinking Capcom was racist. So unnecessary and unprofessional of N'Gai.
Either way, I wish him luck.
