In a recent interview with CasualGaming.biz, Square Enix CEO John Yamamoto expressed that the company's recent entry into the casual market is an attempt to stay flexible and get a piece of the growing pie. The publisher, best known for RPG series like Final Fantasy, recently went down the casual path with My Pet Shop for DS and -- a little less so, but still noteworthy -- Crystal Defenders.
Yamamoto thinks there is "large potential" in the casual market, but he believes that its core RPG titles will still bring in the big bucks to the house of gunblades. He also states that Square Enix is "actively pursuing providing content away from the core RPG titles." Although Yamamoto could be talking about some internal development -- given recent events -- he's probably talking about the company's likely acquisition of Eidos, publisher of the Tomb Raider and Hitman series, this May.

These mass-market casual games are like greasy over-salted fries to a delicious hardcore game's fillet mignon. They add nothing and only fill your gaming appetite with wasted calories. I'm glad someone is finding new ways to stay afloat in such a volatile market, but where is my FF VII PS3 Redo?

I thought the casual gamer was the "Im in ur base, expanden ur profets" to the hardcores "All your base are belong to us"

I have to agree with you. Although I'll prefer "greasy over-salted fries" occasionally, you can't live on them alone. Same goes for casual games.

Joeshie,
Actually you can. That's the point. just get a real life, and you'll find that casual games are all you really have time for. And 99% of the time real life is more fun than a virtual quest through a fictional land called Hyrule ....
I know, crazy talk.

Levi,
You and I feel a similar love for tower defense games (especially on our iPhones) and I can tell you (because I own the full game) that it is a really fun and addicting TD game. It's not on par with Fieldrunners (nothing is) but it isn't as bad as some of the other ones I have bought. Honestly, I would say it's one of the better and more polished ones on the iPhone. I can't wait for the PSN port. Buy the full game because there is so much more to it than what the demo lets you try out.

This was an OK game on the iPhone but there's no need for it to be on Xbox.
Sidenote: PixleJunk Monsters is the Final Fantasy of tower-defense games.
