Embedded after the break is violent new footage from IGN of Resident Evil 5's zombie'riffic Mercenaries mode. It's a special timed survival mode that's unlocked after RE5's main story is completed, and pretty much boils down to staying alive for the duration of the round while scoring points for infected killed. Those who know their franchise history should remember Mercenaries mode from Resident Evil 4.
Be warned, though: the gameplay clips contain intense action sequences, as well as high levels of heart-stopping violence. View at your own risk.
Seems like this is the game mode of the future. Gears has horde, CoD has zombie mode, L4D is adding in survival mode, and RE4 and 5 has this. I think it is a wonderful idea, surviving wave after wave of baddies. Sure, they each have their own style, but I really like it. If I were a RE fan, I am sure I would like this mode. I am still waiting on the L4D DLC though. I like the ability to run and gun, so RE is not my bag. Cool idea though.
Like I said, not a RE fan, I just read that above. Whatever the case may be, I am glad more and more games are incorporating modes such as this. It adds tons to the replay value.
I had been fearing that Capcom would go the route of taking this out of the game and posing it as DLC for a price. Mercenaries has been an integral part of the RE universe and it would have been a shame if Capcom had pulled a Namco.
I hope this will have an optional co-op Mercenaries.
"Unfortunately, it's not online. Instead, you can play on the same machine in a split-screen mode. It seems unlikely that Capcom could build a great online campaign but not be able to pull off online in Mercenaries mode, which leaves me to believe that its exclusive is intentional."
Someone translate the last few words for me. Either " its exclusivity is intentional " or " it's intentional ". Hopefully he didn't mean online co-op Mercs is exclusive to 360.
It's a shame it has only splitscreen co-op, it would have been great if it had online co-op, i hope they patch the mercenaries mode soon after release.
Mercs mode is fantastic. It is also proves that you can have fun, fast paced gameplay, involving hoards of enemies, even with RE's control scheme. I hope they have a character as cool as Krauser in this version. He's so brutal when you time his transformation right.
Been waiting for this game, played the demo and controls suck, dont really care what they do or add to the game, shame cos it looks great but play is really really bad. Dont they have testers that tell em controls are really bad. I think they lost a lot of sales due to the controls, and anyone that buys this game will only play it for a week or so and bottom draw it will go.
I know that they were trying to create a feel to the game with the controls, but all they did was lose my business. Killzone on the other hand Rocks, online Rocks and it just kicks arse.
I remember playing mercenary mode in RE 4 as well as assignment Ada. My friend and I played through all of the missions and the game multiple times eventually beating everything the game had to offer and unlocking all the weapons. The Chicago Typewriter was by far the best weapon in resident evil history. It was even better than the infinite rocket launcher. I must have beaten the main story at least 10 times and maybe more than that.
I remember mercenary mode having some dude that had a black mask (can't remember his name) and being able to string about 30 neck breakers consecutively with him if timed properly. No one should ever play any video game as much as we did that one. I even bought the special edition PS2 version when it was released after the Gamecube version and beat everything on it as well.
I have to say that the absolute hardest thing to accomplish in RE:4 was beating assignment Ada. She is so fragile and can't take any damage and I don't believe there was any sort of check points. It was certainly my favorite game for a long long time.

mercs has been around since re2 and props on picking up on the HUNK letter in re0 as 4 controls there not that hard to get down and i mean there almost the same as re4 and no one really complained about them and that game got a 10/10. every one is so cought up on the whole "run and gun" idea personally if i wanted to play gears of war i would buy it id dont how ever wan every games control scheme to be based off of one game that was massivly produced for players of the shoot er type game.
