Apparently, Survival is designed for quicker play, with matches rarely going longer than 10 minutes (and by rarely, we mean never: Valve [the people who made the thing] have only barely been able to break nine minutes). Ironic, as nine minutes is our personal record for ... actually, never mind.
See video, impressions of Left 4 Dead's Survival mode

Even without any first-hand accounts, we probably could have told you everything you needed to know about Left 4 Dead's forthcoming "Survival" mode. If you'd asked, we would have told you that you'd probably be shooting a lot of zombies for a while and then later, they'd kill you. But it is helpful to have IGN to support our theories with their hands-on impressions and the video we've put right after the break.

My guess is that they wanted another mode other than versus. Versus normally takes over an hour to finish a single game, so they probably wanted a shorter option for online play as well...

Because a versus game takes around 2 hours.
Because a campain takes around an hour if there are no restarts.
I for one would love a game mode that lasts less than 10 minutes. Valve did the same with Arena mode in TF2 and thusly it was welcomed.

Survival mode sounds incredibly monotonous and bland. There's only so long I could stay backed up into a corner spamming melee and expect to be entertained.

Scroll up and watch the video again. You'll notice the time goes from 30 seconds to 1:30 and in that time they have 2 hordes, 2 smokers, a boomer, a tank, and a hunter.
No matter how amazing you think you might be, melee in a corner will not stop that much shit coming at you beyond the first 15-20 seconds.

Yeah, you're not going to survive very long in a corner with two tanks pounding on you.

I love L4D and I'm looking forward to the DLC, but I really don't see whats so impressive about this video. There's absolutely nothing shown in the video that we haven't already seen (except the clock).
Here's to hoping survival mode is a little more than short bursts of the same old...but eh, I'll like it even if it's not.

And now that I've actually *read* the hands on preview rather than just watching the video...I'm a little happier.
First, I didn't think about what this will mean for PC players, as releasing single third-party maps for survival will be much easier than releasing a series for campaign/versus. I didn't think of this because I have the 360 version :*(
And second, I read this!
"Survival mode is playable on 12 levels, 11 of which are taken and modified from the existing four campaigns...There is one entirely brand-new [survival] level in the DLC called Lighthouse which the designers say may be the toughest level of them all."

Here's why this mode is new, hard, and fun:
0:00 - in the middle of a rush already (30 seconds in)
0:17 - smoker grabs lewis
0:20 - smoker dies
0:21 - boomer moan
0:21 - smoker moan
0:23 - tank is coming
0:27 - hunter is coming in
0:39 - a horde is coming with the tank still alive (only happens in Expert, normally)

simply can't be bothered to care, no matter how much i liked this game.
from the day it shipped it was obvious that the amount of content was lacking and a large portion felt they were overcharged by at least $20. it's actually insulting they (valve) didn't even acknowledge this in any capacity, instead announcing this "Survival Pack" garbage which should've been called the "Hey-we-finally-finished-the-game Pack". it's free because this is an 'update'. nothing more, nothing less.
this was an incredibly large opportunity wasted to keep this game relevant. unless, of course, they plan on announcing something in the near future. though im not holding my breath.

Well, I don't think I've seen this much bitching about something free since the Home threads...
I dunno, personally I think it looks fun. But I'd also be impressed if Valve officially included that "survival mode" mod someone made a while back:

A whole lot of complainers for something that's free. It enhances the game for people who enjoy it and doesn't make the game any shittier for the people who hate it.
The internet is for porn, not whining.

Yea I would have liked to see a little more strategy to it. Having to choose a good location, boarding up windows and doors, using furniture to block passages, some more interaction with the environment, etc.

Valve is rapidly approaching the "dropped the ball" status on the DLC for L4D. Yes, a free DLC pack is great and we appreciate it, but this game needs new maps/weapons/survivors/zombies for god's sake. Please Valve, do something before it's too late.
