Steam: Unreal Tournament 3 free to download, play this weekend

Word of a very real deal regarding Unreal Tournament III on PC comes to us by way of BigDownload. For this weekend -- March 6-9 -- only, those with Steam accounts can download the full game (including the freshly released Titan Pack) and play it for free. Come Monday morning, you'll get to play another game: deciding if it worth $11.99, the promotional price it's going for until March 15.

Those who opt for the "No, nuh-uh" option should check out the free -- yet far less pretty -- Quake Live, which just went, er, live last week. You may even get fragged by a Joystiqer. (Yikes, that sounds dirty.)

I've been trying to get this to dl but it gives me a message about Steam Servers being overloaded or whatever.

Yeah. It's been a mess. I've pretty much given up trying to get it to download.

The game is way worth the $11USD and even well worth the $20USD for the regular boxed price.

A great game means diddly squat if no one is playing it.

The main reason keeping me from purchasing this game is because the player count is woefully low, and I'm doubtful that the free weekend and reduced price can breathe life into it. If it becomes popular enough that I can find whatever kind of server I want at whatever time, I'll buy it.

Its fun in single player too. And with such a small price tag, why complain?

I pirated it before, I'm sorry to admit. But I just bought it. I love you Valve.

I love this freakin' game. For those of you playing it on consoles I'm sorry you have been robbed of the Unreal experience because it is terrible on consoles, simply terrible (I gamefly'ed a copy for the 360 just to try out).

its pretty cool on the PS3 with the mod support and the K&M support.

Seeing as I've played both.. I noticed no difference!
They both were fairly "okay".
and I'm an oldschool UT player :x God only knows how many hours I packed in UT2k4 and UT'99.

I don't see how you can even say that. Visually perhaps they are nearly the same but the game doesn't play anywhere near the same. On the PC the pace is so much faster but it is throttled down considerably for the console versions. There isn't much comparison on how the PC version is played to how the 360 version is played.

And I never made any elitest PC remarks. The game is obviously superior for the PC as it was designed with a computer in mind and not console systems. Generally I buy all my games on consoles but the Unreal series simply can't be played with a gamepad. Anyone who sees otherwise is a fanboy of the console variety. I've been with the series since UT99 and it moves far to fast for consoles. The one obvious exception to the series is Unreal Championship II which was designed for the Xbox, was quite good too.

They seem the same speed to me! One just is harder to aim in.

Anywho, this is moot. UT2k4 is better than either a million times over.

Allow me. Consoles suck, PC Gamers are Gods. Mouse + KB > All.

steam is awesome, ive gotten so many games during their awesome deals.

It's cool but for some reason I preferred UT 2K4 over it.

Actually me too.
For the sole reason that is my computer being a piece of crap.
I can run UT3 for about a half hour until my computer overheats.

UT3 is great. Unfortunately Epic thought it was a good idea to launch it during the holdiday season in November and it had to compete with more hyped up and in some cases, better games. So hardly anyone plays it. When you do get a game going though, it's lots of fun.

Does the Steam version still come with the editor? I'm wondering how all that works if Steam makes it use a different directory system.

Yeah you have an option to run the game or editor at startup.

It does. When you launch the game, it asks you if you want to play UT3 or use the editor.

The Steam servers are packed right now...very hard to actually download the game. I love Unreal Tournament...I might just take the plunge.

I thought UT3 was okay, but nowhere nearly as good as UT2k4.

It painfully shows how Epic has sold out PC gamers, too :(

Also, to people who bash the console versions, if being able to kill easier makes one version superb, and another absolutely awful, then something is fundamentally flawed with a game in general.
(Or, well, you're just some sort of fanboy.)

Very good deal at $12. I remember the demo, which was pretty fun, but didn't pick it up at the time cause I thought it wasn't worth the money.

Now if only Steam's servers weren't slammed so I could actually DOWNLOAD the game...

Well that explains why it randomly showed up in my games list wanting to be downloaded. I'm not sure if my machine can handle it though

i don't no what happened but its going so slow like 1% every 40 minutes and its not my computer my computers new....
