Think they could bother to fix the storage problem?

I still personally believe they are holding the storage solution back for something, possibly a game with a lot of DLC.

Is this stupid? Well... Kinda of.
For third parties trying to make money on Wiiware, yes, cause a lot of people don't bother managing their space to get new games.
However, since Nintendo doesn't really many Wiiware games, it can use this problem to it's advantage.

I wish they would just come out with it. I mean Homebrew people solved this issue a long time ago, so development time is absolutely out of the question.

People are going to be so shocked when the storage solution turns out to be the ability to download directly to the SD card, like they've been saying for months, and not actually allowing you to run games FROM the SD card.

It's barely even a problem anyway. Copying a big game to the SD card takes less than 30 seconds. People complain too much. What do they do when they have to actually get up and switch a disc to change the game they're playing?

ARE YOU KIDDING!?! IT"S THE BEST STORAGE SOLUTION EVAR!!! BETTER THAN A HARD DRIVE!!!

Sarcasm aside...I just don't think Nintendo really cares. Wiiware and Virtual Console is just something that makes them an extra buck off the craziness they are already making. I just think Nintendo is too scared to make that much money.

I haven't bought a single download since the initial wiiware launch. I just refuse to do their system...and its lookin like I never will.

Roto13, I'm expecting a little more than that. You are correct that Nintendo has announced no intentions of permitting games to be played *from* the SD card.

However, I think we'll see a clever hybrid. Perhaps the Wii Menu will still read the SD card at boot, and display all of your downloaded games in the menu, giving the impression that they're all loaded into memory. In addition, they'll probably re-engineer the Wii internal memory to feature a sort of swap file that can be used to quickly load a game from SD into Wii memory once it's been selected. If the transfer was fast enough, nobody would mind the slight load time, and you essentially get to use the SD card as more Wii internal memory. This would allow Nintendo to maintain their ridiculous security measures surrounding VC/WiiWare downloads, while providing a true storage 'solution' for all of us.

Nintendo, I've been waiting a long time. Don't let me down.

@ Aaron
That will never happen. Nintendo didn't design the firmware with the future in mind.

That's fine with me. I have no need for them to change anything in regards to the firmware.

@ esposch

Good read. Lots of good points, and it all officially killed off any hope of a proper solution. My wii has never been more tempting to sell.

The lack of superfluous stuff like a Xbox dashboard or the ability to patch games doesn't make the games any less good. If you're looking for a reason to sell your Wii, just do it. Don't wait until you find some excuse.

@Roto13: wear and tear on SD cards and internal flash will become a problem in time and removing a game to play another one for 5-10 min. (I'm an arcade action kind of gamer) is annoying whether it takes 10 seconds or 10min. It has definitely been stated that the goal is to download direct to SD and have "a single seamless operation" for running games. Now as the hackmii link states that could be copy-back-and-forth behind the scenes; that could be loading the game off SD into RAM, but until they release the update we won't know for sure.

I seriously doubt it will only be downloading to SD because that solves little beyond enabling impulse purchases; besides Nintendo generally needs to promote WiiWare and the VC better to get those people who don't do downloading into the game and deepen the 3rd party support for the platform.

I think Nintendo should look at Guitar Hero World Tour / Rock Band 2 with the temporarily sending songs from the SD card to the memory, and use that method with WiiWare and the VC.

Roto13: Are you kidding? Have you got any idea about how many games use saves that CAN'T be copied to a SD card?? No, of course you don't.

Sisyphus: Or maybe you should stop kissing Nintendo's ass and accept that some aspects of the Wii are really badly designed, and people have the right to complain about it.
