Oh, and just to be clear: I'm not saying that whatever I watch on TV I immediately believe to be true in real life. But, the sheer amount of "Italian Americans are thugs" media in existence, a great deal of which is created by Italian Americans themselves, displays a belief that the stereotype is either valid or even admirable.

And I'm also aware that Italian American political groups have protested these portrayals. At one point, Italian Americans protest marched against the Sopranos TV show.

I already got the game, and playing it. The game is great, if you like Dead Space then you will like this game for sure.

And the thing about rascism, I don't think is true. If it were true then how about "Call Of Duty World at War " and "God Of War 2". Those are rascism against "God" and the history of war.

Why do people even bring this up? I never heard the word racism when we were shooting Spaniards in RE 4. The real shocker about this game to me is the fact that they didn't add Dead Space controls.

I have a problem with RE5 for the same reason I have a problem with every player in Madden NFL celebrating. I'm a black man who knows African Americans who are everything from middle managers to geneticist however the games I play never represent my people as anything more than 50 cent, Terrell Owens or Benson.

I've read in early reviews that Sheva is a superior agent to Frosty the Snowman aka Chris Redfield, if that is the case why isn't she the primary protagonist? Why couldn't Capcom allow the Africans to police themselves, in terms of realism blacks being dominated by whites is spot on, however this is a work of fiction and as such is open to manipulation.

Is RE5 racist? Of course it is after all human beings are pack animals who have survived by endearing themselves to others who look and act like them and as such all humans are discriminatory by their very nature, disagree if you must but you're lying to yourself.

Sheva has a higher rank but her experience in dealing with zombies, especially dealing with Wesker, is seriously lacking compared to Chris. And in the previous Resident Evil games it is shown military or police rank is a poor indicator on who can survive a zombie apocalypse. She probably does have extensive experience in infiltration and destruction of region controlling despots. She might have even had experience with zombie outbreaks that occurred in third world countries as described in Resident Evil Degeneration, but so could Chris Redfield. I'd defer to the people who stopped Wesker in this kind of a situation.

Oh, but it's okay for you to call the white protagonist who happens to date back to the first game of the franchise "frosty the snowman?"

Your last paragraph is shocking. You've got real issues if you're thinking like that.

Before you label me, as racists like yourself usually do, I'm neither white nor black.

Wasn't aware that Frosty the Snowman was a racist term nor was it derogatory in any known fashion, it is unfortunate that you were led to that conclusion then again it is entirely possible that you are unfamiliar with the story of the beloved snowman.

Also, I lived a childhood that made a trip to Disney Land/World financially impossible so no as of this writing the land of my ancestors has remained outside of my grasp but worry not quell your rage by knowing the time of my visit (and subsequent residence) is forth coming.

P.S. The whole saying "Im black" thing is old jus to get your point across, its funny how whenever these topics come up there 100 black people randomly responding strangeeee

Hey Joystiq, I don't know if you read these comments, but you need to post what makes this anthropologist an "Expert" on race issues. Like how his credentials include religious imagery in Israel and palestine. Right, not related to race and Africa AT ALL.

This guy can't be taken seriously as an expert. just because he is an anthropologist does not mean he understands everything. I just ask that as journalists you write about the entire story. Race shouldn't be a scary thing to talk about. Let's have an open talk on it. If not, you're only fueling the fire of gamers who let their racist tendencies come out even more (as seen in some of these comments).

GREAT comment. I was I'd seen yours before I did mine, then I would have posted the link to Mr. Bowman's website twice.

Your completely right. There needs to be an open and honest conversation. How else will we really get to the bottom of this issue. And we can't figure this out if everybody is too damn scared to talk about it.

Thanks mate. I'm glad there's someone in here that feels the same way. I really do hope joystiq and videogamer.com actually address this problem.

I'll admit that there are many cases when people cry oppression when there is nothing there, but in this case its so obvious that you'd have to be in denial to miss it. Do your homework friends. This guy specializes in middle eastern religious studies not race, racism, or Africa. He is completely unqualified to determine if anything is racist. Its really sad when the majority of people are so deluded and numb that they can't say racism right in front of them. I mean really? After the legacy of colonialism no one can see the connection between white guy blasting his way through Africa killing black zombies then using gold stolen from the land to upgrade his guns?

but I did find one aspect of it a bit disturbing. It was a bit strange to realize I was wandering around Africa stealing the region's gold, precious gems and expensive native treasures, which I then cashed in to pay for weapon upgrades. Add in the fact that I ended up killing the parasitically infected villagers and townspeople of the area with said weapons, and the discomfort comes full circle. ( taken from ign review of RE5)

Its embarrassing that there are so many gamers who don't even have the balls to critique games they love them. Most of you of so scared to be called racist yourself that you'll say this MUST NOT be racist even if it is. Its easier to brush it off and move on with your life then face reality. How convenient that the privileged majority white, and middle class community of gamers doesn't find this game racist. WHY would you ? Your life goes on either way and it makes you feel better about yourselves to just brush it off. No one is saying Africans or any people of color can't be bad guys. But when it happens all the time in the media, there definitely doesn't need to be a fight for it. Oh ya and calling people racist just because they said you were is a pretty kindergarten comeback, so somebody has got to come up with something better.
