Wedbush Morgan soothsayer Michael Pachter foresees the next console Grand Theft Auto releasing next year and estimates sales of DLC The Lost and Damned reaching two million units by year's end. Pachter feels Take-Two remains a "one-hit wonder" with Grand Theft Auto, that one franchise has been (putting it mildly) immensely successful.
Although Take-Two has yet to announce a new GTA, Pachter believes the next installment in the crime series will pull up to retail next year and likely outsell GTA IV by 50 percent, due to the greater next-gen console install base by next year. Although there are currently no solid numbers to support Pachter's belief that The Lost and Damned DLC will sell two million units this year, we do know a lot of people got on their hogs for biker-based adventure.

The whole reason the games stopped being exclusive was because no amount of money Sony was throwing at them was enough to make up for how much more they'd make by releasing the game on multiple platforms.
I'd have a seriously hard time believing that they'd even consider making the next game exclusive (or that TLAD won't come to the PS3 eventually)

I heard(read?) somewhere that Rockstar actually owes Sony a home console exclusive because of some contract they signed a while ago. LA Noir was supposed to be exclusive to the PS3 for this reason, but ended up going multi-plat because of cost to make it.
So yes, the next GTA has a good chance of being exclusive to the PS3, unless I heard/read a lie.

yep, my friend, i introduce you to Michael Patcher. get used to it, he just makes random predictions (alot of the time without actually analyzing anything, as his job title suggests he should).

I think there's still one more pack for them to release.
As for another GTA, I was kinda hoping they'd do the 70's but like that Life on Mars show. *shrugs*

It would make sense for the next GTA to come out in late 2010, especially if Rockstar returns to that October release window they had back in the old generation of consoles. It would also be on par with the amount of time between GTA3 and Vice City. And of course, they need to cash in as much as possible on that engine they built. I can't wait to see where the story arc goes from here, which city is recreated next. I do hope that we dont return to Vice City or San Andreas and instead get something completely new.

yea, while i generally don't pay attention to most of Patcher says, these ideas are not that far fetched. since Rockstar already has the engine built for GTAIV they can essentially just build a new city on top of that which won't take nearly as long as it did to build the engine from the ground up like last time. they'll probably get at least one (maybe 2) more DLC pack out of IV and then release a new iteration kin to Vice City and San Andreas. all very doable in this 1 3/4 year window we are talking about here.

i think so too. nothing wrong with a 2+ year gap. since we have DLC now, they can extend that gap between titles more so than what they did back in the GTAIII series games.

Are we still calling today's generation of consoles "next-gen"???

I have a feeling Rockstar is waiting until the next gen to do a true next gen San Andreas.
See, I can make predictions too! Where's my money?

Yes, Pachter is genius; yes, he's right a lot of the time, but I think he doesn't understand the situation. To reference an argument from the IGN's TRL podcast, Rockstar created a dynamic New York City (or whatever). I (and they)'ll be damned if Rockstar abandons all of those resources to create a brand new city.
Presumably he actually is referring to the second part of the DLC, but I would expect it to be out by the end of the year.

"One hit wonder" is a misnomer. It would work if T2 only made one GTA, but they've made several now. I think the term he's looking for is "One trick pony."
But you know what, it's an awesome trick that tons of people love. So what's the problem.
Also, I think they're more likely to make more DLC episodes, than release an entirely new GTA. At least I hope so. I like the idea of looking at the stories of Liberty City from different characters' perspectives.
