San Diego to declare March 16 'Sony Online Entertainment Day'

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of EverQuest and the "continued support and dedication" of Sony Online Entertainment, the city of San Diego will hold a ceremony March 10 to declare an official "Sony Online Entertainment Day" -- which will actually take place six days later. Carl DeMaio of the City Council will present SOE's John Smedley with an award at 10 AM.

The SOE announcement suggests arriving at the council chambers early in order to have enough time to find parking and get through security. Of course, then you should get home early, because every minute spent away from the game means that the people still playing are getting ahead of you.

We can't believe EverQuest has been online for 10 years. We remember finding the idea of a persistent multiplayer RPG populated by thousands of people terrifying at the time, and we have yet to get over that initial fear.

The part Joystiq forgot is that every other day will be Xbox LIVE day.

Yeah, to celebrate another day of ripping people off, selling them tired old basic hardware, generic games and charging them the whole time to use it.

They should call it Greed Day, a day where all bankers, stock traders, and unethical corporate terrorists (e.g. Microshaft) celebrate their many ways of raping money from the gullible, unthinking majority.

Jeez, relax people. SOE is HQed here, and with the significant state tax burden on businesses in CA maybe they just wanted to throw em a lil bone to make them feel special. Who cares.

So, besides SWG (which I'm sure LucasArts had a say in), what other franchises did they destroy?

Oh yeah, I'll celebrate how they jerked me around for almost 3 months and 2 in-person interviews before I stopped calling and telling them I'd love to get the job and asking for "updates on the how the decision-making process was going." Worst and most unprofessional hiring practices I've ever dealt with. They never actually got back to me, I just stopped checking in with them.

Hopefully the guy who thought of that catchy phrase got a big bonus.
