As promised, last night's episode of GameTrailers TV brought our first non-fuzzy look at Pure developer Black Rock Studio's upcoming racing title, Split/Second. Keighley's ominous warning seems accurate -- it appears to be trying to give Burnout a run for its money. However, rather than participating in high-speed (probably illegal) street racing for your own amusement, it looks like Split/Second will be placing your automotive exploits in front of an enraptured televised audience.
Split/Second will also add a neat gameplay element hinted at in the trailer -- it looks like players will be able to "trigger" destructive events on the track in order to impede their opponents (or themselves, if they're not on top of their respective games). Watch the trailer if you want an example. The developers promise further info about the game next Wednesday -- til' then, you can check out the trailer here!

It looks like fun, although Need For Speed's been doing the whole 'pursuit breaker' thing since Carbon (and probably Most Wanted, but I haven't played much of that one.)

This looks like a good fun arcade racer. I think if it delivers it will do well since there havent been much to look forward to on that market.
NFS needs to take a break and re think the franchise, Burnout took forever to fix the bugs but it is runing smoothly now but the gfx arent up to this level and MNC, lol are you serious?

I know MNC has the best gfx but not hte best gameplay and Burnout has the gameplay but not the gfx (asside from the bugs and stuff). So thats why I think if this game gets the best of both worlds it can sell well, I personally will be buying it if the game plays and looks like it does on the trailer.

I still play Burnout Revenge, don't like Paradise, this looks like it might be a good replacement for BR when they take down the servers.

Burnout revenge is the best arcade style racing game ever. Burnout paradise could have been amazing if it stayed with revenge, but they took it to a different level.
I hope this game will be fun, but i also don't want to get my hopes up, we'll see.

You guys are both wrong. Burnout Takedown was the best. Revenge, Domination, and Paradise f*cked up the turbo and went back to chain boosting. Which sucks because it took the emphasis from beautiful crashes to trying to get 20x boost chains while not crashing.

nope, sorry chief. i'm right. my opinion is BR is the best of the series. so it's my opinion and you can change it.
i really don't race that much, the racing part stinks (again my opinion and you can't change it). the crash intersections are the best because crashing is the best part of the game.

Pure was good except for the fact it lacked the most critical element of any racing game: split screen multiplayer. The trailer was neat but I'm not holding my breath in hopes that the final product will look anywhere near as good as that presumed CG target render.

That trailer felt like Burnout meets Stuntman. Not saying that's a bad thing at all, I mean, I loved the crap out of Stuntman, and Burnout is my favorite racing series... but sometimes it's bad mixing two good things together. I commend Black Rock for trying something different though.

Alright so, first off way to go gametrailers providing some motherf*ckin high quality trailers. Secondly, I lost interest in that trailer 30 secs into it, I previously said these "burnout" type games have no interest to me. So far, NFS has taken the right direction in focusing on the inside car driving aspect, hopefully I can tweak the game to get some good realism out of it. Lastly, that clip was a kick in the crotch because right after it was the bloody exclusive dlc for Fallout 3, stupid Microsoft.

Amazing trailer...thanks gametrailers!
As for the game I'm very excited for it. I hope it does well. I didn't get Pure cuz of lack of options when it came to multiplayer but what I saw looked beautiful in terms of gameplay and graphics.
This looks to be even better. Hopefully it will have a nice fleshed out multiplayer aspect to it.

You know Pure was a really good game. I agree with you 100% that the only thing that killed it was no split screen (offline) multiplayer. There is only so much a developer can do with a racing game in terms of a narrative. It's good to see someone at least try to do something different. If you like racing games you should check out Midnight Club LA (if you haven't already) as it actually has a good story as well as an open world racing aspect. Obviously the creme of the crop is Gran Turismo, Forza and Mario Kart (on their respective platforms) but there is plenty of room for more racing games in my book regardless of platform.
Did you see The Watchmen? I saw it this weekend and it was pretty decent. It looks like your new here so welcome to the Stiq. Watch out for "Sprinkles" the troll though. That dude is a class A sociopath.

Looking good so far, but I think it's going to need a lot more than Pursuitbreakers to beat Burnout.

If the game ends up playing like the trailer looks I'm worried it may get frustrating very quickly. The bit with the girders falling from 20 floors up could be many times more annoying than a blue shell just before the finish line. Since the girders are being aimed at someone who is under them - how is the target supposed to know about the hazard and try to avoid it?
It's one thing to say "warning: player 2 has missile lock" and another to say "Please wait while you re-spawn, player 2 has just pressed B".
Does the guy in the lead just constantly get screwed over until the end of the race when whoever is in 3rd - 5th place boosts past them and wins?

Yeah, I mean if it plays like that then it's best to do it Mario Kart-style and hang out in 2nd or 3rd and wait for a blue shell on the last lap. Get in the lead any sooner and you're screwed.
Maybe there will be some stuff you can trigger as you pass or after you pass too, like the water pipe in the trailer, or stuff that will prevent others from following you through shortcuts.

I knew it. Back in Feb. I said this looked like Deathrace, people looked at my comments with a WTF. http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/pure-developer-blackrock-teases-new-action-racer/comments/17171724/
Here it is, and you can trigger dangerous track events and there's an audience. Deathrace minus the crazy armor and prison.
