As pumped as we are at the prospect of a current-gen rendition of Sega's Outrun series, it's tough to judge the aesthetics of racing games without seeing them in action. Thankfully, some gameplay footage of the XBLA (and European PSN) racer OutRun Online Arcade recently surfaced in a YouTube video (which we've courteously posted after the jump).
It looks about as fun and arcade-y as you'd expect -- realistic physics are suspended in favor of endless drifting, and cars travel at sound barrier-breaking velocities. Also making a reappearance is the series' blonde passenger, who helpfully squawks asinine remarks (such as, "I want to go far away!") as you maneuver through hairpin turns going 280 km/h. Thanks for contributing, you fair-haired freeloader.

The amount of Outrun 2 re-releases, which is what they all are, don't let the subtle title changes fool you, is reaching Squaresoft proportions.

It'll do until Sega releases Daytona USA 2 on XBLA.

Yawn, if they're going to rehash this franchise, at least put some effort in, give it something to make it stand out. I thought I was watching a video of PS2/PSP Ridge Racer.
As for online play? I don't think it's going to make a dent in the popularity of current online racers.

Yeah of course, it's still a little weak and generic though, I'd have hoped for something new other than compulsory-these-days online play.
I guess I can't complain though, like you say, it is an arcade title.

It's worth it at any price. Only ignorant fools who can't play the game properly would say otherwise.

The point is if people buy this, we may see Daytona USA 2 on XBLA. It's your duty to buy this.

Oh my god! A Panzer Dragoon dragon flying above!? (1:16) What does it mean SEGA!? WHAT DOES IT MEAN!?!? Don't toy with me you bastards!

It means they can get away with not making a Panzer Dragoon game for even longer, now that they've acknowledged it.

Indeed, I also bought it as outrun: coast 2 coast for the original xbox some years ago. The disc works on the 360 as well. The video on youtube looks identical so I guess the only difference is that there are now achievements?
The one who is playing in the youtube video does have mad skillz though :)

Looks fun, but I'd rather have Road Rash Arcade.
And no, tifosiotaku, this doesn't warrant your 20th reply today.

Yes, it does. I'd do naughty things for a Criterion-developed Road Rash revival. Does EA want my $60 or not?

Pretty sure XBLA games don't cost $60, natch!

I might be harsh in saying this since I haven't really played Outrun before but...
So its Ridge Racer with less pretty graphics?

At about the 1:19 mark of the video I think a terradactyl flies above the freeway.

What? There was no Dreamcast version of OutRun 2! This is a direct port of OutRun 2 SP/2006/Coast 2 Coast!

Ugh. I don't like SP/2006/C2C's (how many names has this goddamn version had?!) handling. Brushing vehicles like that in the original (heh) OutRun 2 would have resulted in an extreme loss of speed. SP's handling is way too forgiving in my opinion.

Some people prefer simpler pick up and play arcade style racing to stuff like Grid or Forza. Even Burnout Paradise is kind of daunting with all the stuff there is to do, I just want to work on my times on a few tracks and drift into oblivion. Just let us arcade racer fans have this one and don't unfairly compare it to deeper experiences, this is a less is more type thing...

Drift games are bullsh*t. They look stupid, if you drove like that in real life you would drive straight into a wall and even if you didn't crash you would go a lot slower than driving normally! Ferrari's are designed to be driven on the racing line, not sideways.

Neither is Sega Rally, Scud racer or Daytona, but none of them look this daft.

I myself am a "longtime Sega fan" I played this when it came out originally and I remember the first outrun which had none of this driving sideways bulls*it in it. And did you really say "the best thing Sega has released in the past 10 years"?
How about: F355 Challenge, Cyber Troopers Virtua on:VOOT, Caution Seaman, Virtua Fighter 5, Space Channel 5, Rez (AM9), Phantasy Star Online, Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, Samba de Amigo, Daytona 2001, Chu Chu Rocket, Jet Set Radio (AM6), not to mention Shenmue 1 and 2...
