Rumor: John Woo's Stranglehold to get the film treatment
We thought we'd seen just about every permutation of Hollywood and the game industry's lascivious intersections: The movie based on the game; the game based on the movie; the game based on the movie based on the game, the game based on the movie based on the graphic novel; the movie sequel to the video game; and the video game sequel to the movie. But what about the movie based on the game, which was a sequel to the movie for which the aforementioned movie based on the game is also a sequel ... to? It's confusing, but it's also Hollywood breaking new ground!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriters Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio are writing a celluloid adaptation of Stranglehold, Midway's 2007 shooter and sequel to John Woo's classic action film, Hard Boiled. Stranglehold saw players assume the role of inspector "Tequila" Yuen (played on the big screen by Chow-Yun Fat) and generally wage war on treacherous gangs, unstable trolleys, unexpected flocks of doves and especially watermelons.
We're awaiting a comment from Midway, but this potential adaptation seems like a great idea, especially with many critics describing the first sequel to Hard Boiled as being just like a movie.

I loved that game...hard.
Linkario @ Mar 9th 2009 5:47PM
The game was hard or you love the game hard?
I thought it was pretty easy. I liked the game a lot... but it was pretty easy and pretty short.
Shmil @ Mar 9th 2009 2:56PM
How about a sequel to Stranglehold in game form? I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
ducttapeBigSexy @ Mar 9th 2009 3:28PM
Oh yeah, that'd be a day one purchase for me!

Could this be the first GOOD movie adaptation of a video game?
Michelobius @ Mar 9th 2009 3:21PM
There have been a few. But you're right, they're rare.

"But what about the movie based on the game, which was a sequel to the movie for which the aforementioned movie based on the game is also a sequel ... to? It's confusing, but it's also Hollywood breaking new ground!"
hahahaha classic.
BTW, this is a leading nominee for the "Most Obvious Decision" Award, right?

I'm all for this, because I loved the game's story. If anything, it was a lot better than the repetitive gameplay.
joeybeast @ Mar 9th 2009 3:14PM
Hard Boiled is a fun movie to watch.
One hospital scene in particular.
A five-minute long shoot-out shot in one continuous sequence. IN CO-OP!

Nice, I love old school badass Chow Yun Fat, dude was awesome in the Hard Boiled and The Killer days. So it'd be nice to see both Chow Yun Fat and John Woo kinda step back from the Hollywood crap of late and return to make another kickass action flick.
RyFar206 @ Mar 9th 2009 4:01PM
So are we going to see a game based on the movie based on the game? How could it go wrong?...
John P @ Mar 9th 2009 4:25PM
I wonder if Midway gets a little kickback for this. I'm sure they'd appreciate it. Or at least their creditors would
Whylekat @ Mar 9th 2009 6:29PM
Good! Cause that game was boring!
j.howlett @ Mar 9th 2009 7:26PM

I'm pretty sure this was a rumor way before the release of this game about Stranglehold being made into a movie. That same rumor also said that John Woo wouldn't be directing it.

"I'm the movie playin' the movie disguised as another movie."
