To be honest I'm kind of glad this was stopped at the manufacturing level and that the people who directly benefit from this piracy will be the ones to get punished. Thats opposed to the end user who is purchasing said item. It's going to be a never ending cat and mouse game just like the war on drugs.

They'll likley only be inside 6 months.. sentencing is far too lax in the UK..then they'll be back out at it again.. 'CP' would clear up the severe end of criminals, so the lesser end can stay in longer, like pirates..

i dont want to say its too late but these ds cards are all over the internet. also how many of you saying "im glad these people got caught" or "piracy is bad" can honestly say you dont download anything (games, videos, music files)

oh is that you again? as i said last time on this matter: I don't pirate anything. I have a well paid job so a £7 album, a £25 game isn't exactly going to break the bank.

I'm with Josh.

To all of you taking the high moral ground and calling for the brutal death of these pirates, did you read the article? I would love for you to enlighten me as to what they were actually pirating and selling.

"A web-based business was alleged to be importing and selling Nintendo DS™ copying devices worldwide via the internet."
"the illegal game copying devices started showing up at airports across the UK."
Its a game copying device. It copies games which is pirating. I'm going out on a limb here, and I'm gonna guess they then sold the copied games.

See, that's where this whole thing gets me hung up.

First of all, the article focuses on the Nintendo DS, and apparently these "illegal game copying devices started showing up at airports..." Ok. In the DS piracy world, It's called an R4 or similar flashcart device. No copying of DS cartridges happens with a flashcart, they just play ROMs. There are dozens of DS ROM sites out there that host the ROMs FOR FREE. If these individuals were importing and reselling flashcarts, then it's a different story that falls into a different legal arena.

Secondly, they claim that the business was buying and selling "...Nintendo DS™ copying devices". I was unaware one could pirate entire handheld devices. That's called counterfeiting, and is a different beast.

Speaking of counterfeiting, the headline of the article implies that they were making counterfeit games, but not the article itself. Even if this were the case, who would buy a counterfeit DS game when you can buy a flashcart and have every DS game for free? If they were making counterfeit games for other systems, I doubt that they would even run. This would constitute fraud, not piracy.

If they were instead selling "illegal game copying devices," (of which the raid found thousands) I don't know what kind of business they could sustain by selling devices to compile ROMs from official game cartridges. If you are a DS pirate, you don't have the original cart in the first place, so it would be a waste of energy to procure it and make a copy, right?

Finally, did you see the picture associated with the article? There was a box with jewel-case copies of GameCube games, some N64 games, and a GameBoy Advance SP. I figured that if this company were such a threat to money-making IPs, they would probably feature at least one game from a current-gen console. But that's just me.

Could this be a FUD article? Could the UK authorities be completely overstating what they found in order to scare Nintendo users into not using pirated software? I'm not sure. All I know is that the article is full of holes in my opinion.

This is why you buy your game copying devices while you're in Hong Kong and smuggle said device up your anus on your way home.

I'm wondering if these evil "game copying devices" were infact humble mod chips that can be used for such evil uses as playing Monkey Island on your DS or learning kanji.

You know, the ones featured in posts such as:
