Some footage and screens from Factor 5's Superman project have managed to make their way online, courtesy of Unseen64. While we would've liked to have seen some actual gameplay, sadly the only items on offer are a brief CG trailer (past the break) and some screens. We'd offer our opinion on it all one way or the other, but all of this media seems to be from really early in the game's development -- who knows which way the title was headed?
Well, in the opposite direction of Superman 64 would have been nice.
In regards to Superman64, has anyone that worked on that game ever opened up candidly about it in relation to how widely acknowledged it is throughout the industry as being one of the worst games ever? I'm curious to know their thoughts in hindsight.
having never played the game...and having heard all the internet griping about just how retarded superman 64 was has really only served to peek my intrests on just how miserable of a game it could be...im sure ill never get the chance without actualy going out of my way....but i am intrested none the less.
This is very important, because this is the first thing to come out of Factor 5 since that concept shot of Pit, and even the validity of that was highly questionable (due to its low quality. A concept is equal to the quality seen here)
It just deepens the mystery about Factor 5's apparent demise
i love how superman 64 is still the go to game for terribleness. i just wonder how many people actually have played the game vs how many people just go with what other people say. me, i got that game when it first game out, no online reviews, or demos, so i bought it (well, my mother did). i still have it in a box, and whenever people say some game is bad, i invite them over and make them play superman 64.
I actually tried it and gave up. The first stage in a game should cover the basics, and that one just throws you into an impossible gauntlet, with impossible time limits and retarded controls. Even if I could ever make it into the second stage...WHY WOULD YOU?
Superman is just one of those properties that you really can't turn into a proper video game in all honesty. You can't have him taking damage from any human objects - bullets bounce off him, and rockets/explosives would only push/bounce him around until he gets smart and starts punching them or using heat vision. And you can't have EVERYONE in the game running around with kryptonite weapons. Scenarios like "Save people (especially Lois) from falling off building/getting crushed/dying/etc" haven't ever really been done well in video games, and would probably be too frustrating if too complex. Just give me a Superman game that's like Shadow of the Colossus...nothing but bosses/characters who have actually been able to damage him in the comics.
Either that or make it some kind of whacky dating game where you date Lois as Clark, and everytime she goes to the restroom/copyroom/etc, you fly off to save X number of people, then fly back in enough time to enjoy the rest of your date.
Those are actually really good ideas. I'd imagine there are plenty of ways to keep superman invincible, but still make it challenging without timed fetch quests or escort quests. I, uh, just can't think of any.
man that sucks. stupid economy. Superman should be able to be in a good game. They just haven't put in effort to make an actually good game. batman's history isn't that great either, but that new one looks awesome.
