Ya'll must seriously be in need of questions. Three weeks in a row with the same lips mic question?

Seriously, though. I appreciate this weekly feature.

I find the picture with HDMI is a bit more vivid.

True, I prefer the "softer, smoother" look I get from VGA though

Ironically, Orange Box, specifically Half Life 2, was the game that I was playing when my 360 got the E74 error. I hadn't had any problems with the game before, but the replacement console Microsoft gave me has had some problems with Orange Box and Assassins Creed specifically

HDMI: best. Component: still great. I find the picture is better while watching DVDs but not as much with the games. Personal experience.

I have had the same battery thing going on. Actually, the batteries are a tad outdated. Most rechargeable batteries (xbox, AAs) are NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride). They are a step up from Nickel Cadium, but still a step down from Lithium ion. Lithium ion batteries are common nowadays in cell phones and laptops and other devices, cameras, etc. They also do not exhibit 'memory' meaning you can charge lithium ion batteries any time, whether they are empty or not. The nickel batteries do exhibit memory, meaning if you charge them before they are totally dead, the recharge is not as good. Over time, it wears them out. They also do not have as long of a life. 3 years is about right for them. Rechargeable AAs are a good idea, cause they are cheaper per pair. You will spend the same amount buying a pair and a charger as you would a battery pack alone, and then replacement AAs are cheaper. It is a better route to take. They too are NiMH, so you should run them empty before charging in order to recharge to max capacity and it also prolongs their lifespan. Hopefully one day soon we will get Li-ion rechargeable AAs. They are not yet available (not that I have seen in stores or online). Anyways, hope this helps a bit with the battery question.

@Daniel & JoystiqX

I have Orange Box installed on my HDD (on NXE obviously) and it runs well without any hitches or errors. I have played through Portal, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, and I am currently going through Ep. 1. Unless the problem you are having is in Ep. 2 try installing it on your HDD. It's only ~6.8GB : )

For the recharable batteries, its a common problem as the batteries have a "memory". If you don't charge them for a long time, or you constantly charge them when they're not depleted, they will start doing what you're experiencing.

Firslty, clean the connectors. Secondly, when charging, when it hits green; take it out and put it in. Notice that it'll now take longer to hit green again. Repeat this process until you start getting more use out of the battery/it starts charging for a decent amount of time.

This is what happened to me. Hopefully this is the same case for you.

RE: Orange Box. I was having the same issue with it. It would freeze during HL2 but not on portal. On a whim I tried installing it to the hard drive and that seemed to fix the problem.

I just switched from Microsoft's proprietary Xbox controller battery to rechargeable 2700mAh AAs and I am much happier. They last forever, and I have a ton of them in the house.

If you have a 2002-vintage, 540p native, CRT-based HDTV like me, HDMI means nothing. ;)

AA rechargables FTW. Seriously. I have had the same 8 running in constant loops since 6 months after launch and I am only recently noticing a reduction in play time with sets. And cheaper.

about the hdmi...
the main advantage of hdmi is the ability to display 1080p which most tvs on component cant do. since your tv only displays 1080i, hdmi wouldnt give you much gain other than the digital audio (which can be had with an optical cable)

Also, the 360 outputs 1080p over component for games...just not HD-DVDs (for us poor souls that have them).

What's with the answer about the batteries? Your charger is fine; your battery packs have reached the end of their useful life. If you got three years out of them you did pretty well. Keep your charger (or Play-n-Charge cable) and buy a couple new battery packs and all will be well again.

Microsoft's battery packs are of good quality and there's no reason to avoid them.

Nickel-metal hydride batteries self-discharge quickly when they're not in use, as you've discovered. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them, and you'll find NiMH rechargeable AA's do exactly the same thing. Since NiMH batteries don't have the same memory effect as the old nickel-cadmium ones, there's no real harm in throwing them back on the charger each time you're done playing so they're always ready for next time.

Oh, and on the subject of HDMI: One reason not to use it over component is that it introduces a delay on some TVs. If you're heavily into music games or games that require fast reflexes (like Street Fighter) this can be an issue.

Apparently on most sets the difference in picture quality between HDMI and component is negligible anyway.

I have used both high quality AA rechargeable batteries (2500 mAh) and the xbox play and charge kit ( i think those are only 1800 mAh ) and I prefer the play and charge over the AA's. It's so much easier to just plug in a cable when you need to recharge and I can use the thing for nearly a week between charges. I play several hours every day, and I have had the play and charge since Rainbow Six Vegas released (the first one).
