GTA IV: 13m shipped as of Jan. 31, DLC Ep. 2 in 2009
Take-Two's Q1 investor's call is going down right now, and one of the first items of news to blast its way out is the knee-wobbling figure of 13 million units; which is roughly the number of copies of GTA IV that has shipped worldwide on all platforms as of January 31, 2009 (technically, it's "over" 13 million shipped). To put that in perspective: that's more than one third of the population of Canada.
Also of note, Take-Two continues to list GTA IV's second Xbox 360 DLC episode for release in "fiscal 2009" (that's before November 1, 2009 -- for all you regular calendar users). "DLC will be an important part of our business going forward," CEO Ben Feder declared during the call.

Damn thats a lot of units sold.
required @ Mar 10th 2009 5:10PM
I wonder if the number is for Microsoft's Xbox only.
Heyyou27 @ Mar 10th 2009 5:36PM
@ required
About 7 million of those were sold on the 360 and about 5.5 million on the PS3. While the PC numbers are unknown, it is unlikely they make up any significant part of that 13 million copies.

joystiq needs to revise this thread so that it gets pulled into http://playstation.joystiq.com/
as it stands they've tagged it as Microsoft only
Rhamsey @ Mar 10th 2009 4:54PM
stupid fiscal calendars and their fiscalness crap.
anyway, thats a huge amount of dlc sold. i wonder how much of it was digital dlc vs the retail ones.
Vcize @ Mar 10th 2009 5:27PM
I don't see anything in the article that talks about how much DLC sold...
Rhamsey @ Mar 10th 2009 5:53PM
oh, i thought they said that the first part of dlc sold 13mil, and i was impressed, which was why they were saying dlc was the future/important and all that stuff.
Randall Hopkins @ Mar 10th 2009 4:56PM
They've secured an automatic DLC purchase from me.
The Lost and Damned is easily the best $20 I've spent on gaming this year.
xenocidic @ Mar 10th 2009 5:03PM
likewise. the only thing i have a problem with is that at the end of the episode, you only have around 100-200k$ in your pocket...
i'm loathe to use cheat codes...
Brucie_K @ Mar 10th 2009 5:06PM
xenocidic, you don't like cheat codes? Well, guess what?
There aren't any cheat codes for getting money in GTA IV.
I guess the jokes on... us.
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ Mar 10th 2009 5:36PM
Wait, you mean you can actually do something with your money in Lost and the Damned? In GTA4, I bought every single piece of clothing, every single damn weapon, ever possible apartment and I still had over one million $$$ left.
One reflection, one can only wonder how big Roman's debt was if he's still whining at the point Niko has just about enough money to buy half of Liberty City.
xenocidic @ Mar 10th 2009 6:06PM
yes, you can buy rounds for the rocket launcher =)
3500 a pop even from the gun van.
@brucie ye, but I could use them to get the weapons I can't afford. . .
Swagman @ Mar 10th 2009 8:48PM
So ditto.
Best value for any title I've purchased since the Orange Box.
Cody @ Mar 10th 2009 5:00PM
Meh...
GTA: Chinawars is looking to be the freshest take on this series since GTA: III
I can't wait to get back to that style of 1 and 2 with the brand new twist they've implemented with the comic book style graphics on a brand new DSi
Vcize @ Mar 10th 2009 5:26PM
LOL. Poor, poor Cody...
Gun Barrier @ Mar 10th 2009 5:02PM
you all know its going to happen sooner or later... so let me get it over with....
ITS OVER NINE THOUSAND......THOUSAND!!!!!!!
Vegeta (DAT ASS!!!) @ Mar 10th 2009 5:22PM
I'll kill you.
required @ Mar 10th 2009 5:08PM
is this total for the lost and damned or GTA IV?
samfish (is ready for MadWorld!) @ Mar 10th 2009 5:19PM
GTA IV.
If it was 13 million of L&D, that would be about a 1:1 ratio, which is impossible since the PS3 currently isn't getting the DLC.
SmilinGoat @ Mar 10th 2009 5:21PM
just GTA4
i want to know how much L&D has sold.
also ive heard some friends claiming that L&D would be coming to the PS3, any truth to that? i have a 360 as well, and prefer the controller so it doesnt matter to me, but i was just curious as i heard it was (along with one more DLC) exclusive to the 360... not just time exclusive...
required @ Mar 10th 2009 5:34PM
joystiq should revise this post then since they didn't tag the PS3
Kodros @ Mar 10th 2009 5:49PM
It's not PS3 specific, so there wouldn't be PS3 link. There is a XBox link because part of the news is related to the DLC that only the XBox gets.
required @ Mar 10th 2009 5:54PM
Kodros, that is a pretty pathetic excuse. The gist/posting is GTA IV sold as of 1/31. It's not a Microsoft Xbox story.
Mo @ Mar 10th 2009 6:37PM
seriously, due to the multiplatform it should be both. If im only playstation.joystiq i don't see this post... which is relevant to a degree.
dylan @ Mar 10th 2009 5:23PM
Zombie DLC please, k thnx
WiredKnight @ Mar 10th 2009 5:27PM
Are you listening, Pachter?
bioadam @ Mar 10th 2009 5:42PM
DLC makes so much sense for everyone. Gamers get more great content. Designers and coders get to reuse the old game world. Publishers get $, no used games sales to contend with, and none of that dirty piracy.
Mr Khan @ Mar 10th 2009 5:48PM
And the great many people without reliable broadband can go fuck themselves!
Yup, its a wonderful thing
WiredKnight @ Mar 10th 2009 5:54PM
People without "reliable broadband" should probably have higher priorities than DLC.
Lord Negatron @ Mar 10th 2009 6:20PM
LOL Khan cussed using humor, today was a good day.
Mo @ Mar 10th 2009 6:39PM
uhm, are you implying that people are using their consoles with dialup ?
required @ Mar 10th 2009 5:46PM
I think joystiq wants the world to think that GTA IV is the sole property of Microsoft.
Mo @ Mar 10th 2009 6:38PM
well, joystiq is extra gay for m$.... i sure miss ps fanboy :-/
Kodros @ Mar 10th 2009 5:47PM
"DLC will be an important part of our business going forward,"
Can't be that important if they're leaving out the 5.5 million PS3 owners of the game.
xenocidic @ Mar 10th 2009 6:08PM
A single tear just rolled down my cheek...
Microsoft paid good money for this exclusive DLCz!
Kodros @ Mar 10th 2009 8:30PM
Nice fanboy response to a non-fanboy observation. My point is that he's telling their investors that DLC is important yet they aren't offering it to almost half of the people that bought the game.
As for the amount MS paid, it was $25 million per episode. I don't think Rockstar would have had trouble exceeding that number with 13 million copies of the game out there.
Randy @ Mar 10th 2009 5:51PM
Can they do a patch soon? New content keeps freezing at certain points. I looked and I'm not the only one suffering from this. Holding off playin till I see one.
Sonic @ Mar 10th 2009 5:56PM
The better question would be how many of them are setting on Game Stop/EB/Game Crazy shelves used, waiting to be purchased by someone else. When I traded in my copy of GTAIV, the clerk there mentioned something about having 50 copies of GTAIV on hand used.
I still got $15 for it though... which was nice considering I had bought it at blockbuster (with PGR4 in a 2-for-1 deal) for that price.
ChiTownRuler23 @ Mar 10th 2009 8:21PM
im guessing episode 2 will come out mid fall, and i wonder if R* will stop at episode 2, and if not how many do u think we will see?
Premature ejaculation man @ Mar 10th 2009 9:30PM
The achievement + the mission "holy trinity" features Niko, Johnny and another guy all featured in the one mission (the one with diamonds I think). The next DLC wil likely focus on him and how he is related to that mission and the city.
If they do any further DLC after that episode, I think they'd just expand multiplayer and weapons (or allow the new additions to work in normal GTA IV)
Dan Rabot @ Mar 11th 2009 5:31AM
I was actually quite dissapointed with GTA4. Don't get me wrong, it was brilliant the first time through and I was hooked on the MP for a good while.
It just didn't have that "hook" to keep me playing and messing around in the world like San Andreas did. In SA I would spend hours doing nothing, working out, flying planes, parchuting etc etc. Where as GTA4 was very much, "play it through, start it again, get bored, trade in"
My buddies and I 100%'d SA and VC (by far the best!) but once 4 was finished there was always something else we'd prefer to play.
Had this DLC come perhaps 6 months ago I would have been all over it, but now, to me, GTA4 is old news.
Give me a GTA4 Vice City!!! FTW!
