THQ's Farrell says company is aiming for core foothold
THQ CEO Brian Farrell believes his company can still gain footing in the core gaming market, focusing on a quality level that "resonates with the consumers and the press." Speaking at the Wedbush Morgan Securities annual conference, attended by Gamasutra, Farrell maintains THQ has continued to strike a chord with the core audience. Saint's Row 2 -- a game Farrell described as "the number-two open-world game in the category" behind Rockstar's GTA -- has "done 2.6 million units life to date." Whether "done" means sold or shipped, is unclear.Farrell also told the audience the Warhammer 40K franchise is one "we should start talking about more." Citing upwards of 4 million units for the original Dawn of War RTS, through initial release to expansion and gold edition. In its first week, Dawn of War 2 jumped to the top of the PC sales charts.
Farrell could be accused of shining as might positive light on the current poor situation his company is in. Analysts have predicted the publisher has a 50% chance of bankruptcy since THQ reported a net loss of $191.8 million for the three months ending December 31, 2008, and a loss of 24 percent of its workforce. As for Farrell's comments, it could be said that achieving a quality bar may be difficult when the company has recently decided to axe a large portion of Quality Assurance employees from Volition, the team behind Saint's Row 2. In the streets, we call that irony.

I would have bought Dawn of War 2 if it had the same core gameplay as the original. IE, base building and defending. Half the fun of any good RTS game is the base-building and defending. Taking that away, for me anyway, has ruined the game. I will still probably get it when Steam has it on sale, but for now, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm are far superior IMO.
Yes i know they tried to make the game more like the tabletop, and i applaud them for doing a great job, but it's so vastly different from the originals i loved so much that i can't bring myself to be impressed.

They still own my heart for the WWE games they put out. It'd be a dirty shame if they folded.

I havent played a wrestling game since they changed the controls from the awesome games on the N64. WcW vs NWO World Tour, WWF No Mercy etc etc. The control scheme they had for those N64 games was flawless, then they changed it with the Smackdown games and i hated them so much, they just sucked by comparison and drained the fun from the whole series. If they've gone back to the other controls, plz tell me!

nice analysis on the irony angle. I think Farrell mentioned that THQ is moving toward a centralized QA dept at the corporate HQ. it sounds like Volition's QA dept must have been really large if they could cut 120 people out of it, not so ironic really if the central office wants to have greater oversight on quality

that's really horrifying... 120 QA people, and Saints Row 2 still has MASSIVE glitches?
Just last night: it deleted all chop shops from the game. Not just my save, not my profile, but my whole god damned PSN ID! The only way to get them back: start a new profile on my PS3 and play the game from the beginning.

That guy looks like the love child of John Elway and John Travolta.

Saints Row 2 the PC version SUCKS. You may want to look into those folks you burned, Farrell.

"focusing on a quality level that 'resonates with the consumers and the press.'"
Hahahaha, from THQ?! So the business model of the past 20 years is suddenly tossed out the window? Among all of the "big" publishers THQ has always had the lowest overall quality; they've unleashed some serious shit on the world! They always astounded me in their ability to make EA look like a good, responsible publisher no matter how bad things got at EA.
And regarding the occasional good game they release? Even a broken clock it right twice a day.

What was Volition's QA team before the cuts? Judging by the quality of the Saints Row 2 PC port a fair bet would be 10 drunk monkeys and a flaming pile of tires. Really, any game which fails to run smoothly on its lowest visual quality settings on a PC which exceeds the games recommended specs is poorly coded. And this is after a patch which claims to increase performance by 20%.
