"Because a virus being spread in a big city (like in the original RE games) would be preposterous right?"

Big city? Raccoon City was a tiny town in rural BFE*. It looks like it was built entirely to house and disguise the Umbrella labs which were buried deep beneath the city.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RAC.jpg

*BFE is a midwestern term meaning "bum fucked Egypt", i.e. middle of nowhere

I was pretty hyped for Madworld until I saw the recent gameplay trailers.
Going for a more adult audience is one thing, but I think they went a bit far.

In 2 minutes not a single sentence was uttered that didnt contain a swear or some form of blow job reference.

Its a fine line, but I think my aiming for mature audiences, they took it to the most juvenile place possible. I'm no softy, but I couldn't stop wincing.

I can't understand why this is an issue now, but not in Resident evil 4, where ALL of them were yelling at you in Spanish, and you were in Spain, blowing the heads of infected Spanish villagers.

The first time you enter the village, you see a bunch of Spaniards burning the corpse, saying "Bien!" Anyone who thinks this is racist is obviously a racist themselves.

That reminds me....I

Not that that question hasn't all ready been answered a billion times all ready, but, the reason RE4 wasn't controversial is because there is no strong history of Americans oppressing the Spanish. Technically race never could have been raised as an issue to begin with since Spaniards are white, so it was a white on white violent act in RE4. The reason RE5 IS getting such attention is because, and maybe you noticed this, America has a very strong history of the white man suppressing black people with undercurrents that many people believe exist to this day, albeit in a much more subdued form. Slap on top of that the fact that AIDS is an epidemic in Africa and now you have a game that looks like a white dude killing a bunch of rabid AIDS victims in some people's eyes, not mine. Just telling you why it's getting attention. The game just has so many parallels to real-life history that people are going to draw those conclusions whether they were intentional on Capcom's part or not.

Exactly! Everybody intuits the pecking order of things.

It's fully legal to kill almost any race in most games but somehow you kill a few negroes and it's a big to do.

It's not like you're killing zombie negroes with 'grape drank' or something.

There is not one race that has not been slaves at some point. Black people are just overly sensitive about it. There are still slaves today in many parts of the world and in America too. People seem to want to forget that black slavery was started by the dutch and the other africans were selling their enemy tribesmen into slavery.

The chinese were defacto slaves when building our railroads in the 1800s, you don't see them crying foul all the time. The japanese were rounded up and incarcerated in the 40's, they don't bring it up every time their taco orders are messed up. People need to realize that horrible things have happened in the past. Horrible thing swill happen in the future, it's the failure to move on attempt to not repeat past mistakes that make it fucked up.

It seems a lot of people like to bitch about how some family member who died before they were even born were treated, but don't seem to worry that in many parts of the world people are still treated that way.

In many places in Europe there are still africans being rounded up and then kept captive to work off an insurmountable debt. Where I live I can drive down a street and see literally 30 african prostitutes selling themselves on the street to pay off debts they "aquired" by the people that brought them here. The thugs keep their passports until they pay them fees of about 50-100,000 euro.

Let's try to complain about that and make it better before we worry about people that died 2 generations ago.

I'm taking this a completely different way than most people, I think. I'm glad people think it's racist. Now let me explain before I get downvoted. RE5 is considered racist by some, but not by most, which tells me that at worst, it'll only offend a few people. But what that says to me is that racism is less rampant than ever, and here's why: If there was something going on that was so obviously and purposefully racist, we wouldn't care about maybes, because there would be certainties. There are obviously no certainties, which is why people are focusing on the maybes. Someone will always get offended by something, but the true severity is declining, otherwise no one would have even noticed. This, to me, is a good sign.

Okay, so its racist if a white character attacks a black zombie character in a video game that takes place in Africa.

Its not racist when a black paramilitary squad from Africa takes over the White House, kills white staffers and security service agents and holds holds the white president and white's staffers hostage on this season's 24.

Its racist when no person of color is represented in a piece of entertainment in some way shape or form in a somehow positive light.

We just cherry pick our racism, don't we?

Ummm, terrible example. 24 is actually considered very politically incorrect, right-wing, and I've heard many media critics accuse the show of veiled bigotry, and at the very least with a strong sense of xenophobia. I'm sure a quick Google search will reveal some academic's opposition to 24's views.

Similarly, Italian American groups protest marched against the production of the Sopranos TV show, because they said it continued to portray Italian Americans as dumb, violent thugs.

Does anyone really think this game is racist?

Will it present disturbing imagery for those with a knowledge of the plight of the black man in the last 200+ years? Yes. Will it give pleasure to racists in a manner not intended by the developers? Unfortunately, yes.

But really -- let's focus our anti-racism efforts on people that are actually racist.

Its sad that things have come to this.
So if a DLC episode were added to RE5 and were to take place in China, the zombies would be Chinese. Would that be racist? Its the setting its not like you're choosing to go kill people there for the fun of it because of their cultural backgrounds! People over play the racism card to the point that they are the ones keeping it alive.
Yes, there will always be someone out there that is racist; get over it. We're getting to the point of reverse discrimination for the sake of making a point that discrimination still exists.
Its like a black person using the N word and then being offended by a non black person using it. Its a sad misconception that a black person using it takes power away from the word. All it does is remind people its exists and if anything, promotes the use of it because of how casually its being used.
People don't think before they act anymore but they have no problem complaining about the effects their action caused.
Anyways, if this bothers you that much, I respect that but I recommend that you don't buy the game to show your disapproval; don't try to convince the world that they have to agree with your opinion.

Yeah, seriously. They should just put all the racist content into a DLC add-on. That way the racists could just pay a premium for the racist content they're all hungering for so desperately.

Here's another one to think about:
In college, there was a group of students of 1 cultural decent that did their work together, spoke in their native language and wouldn't even acknowledge me because I wasn't of the same culture.
One day a test came back and I saw a guy from that group, he got an answer correct that I didn't so I asked if he could tell me how he figured it out or if I could see his solution. He just shoved the paper in his binder. The next test came back and he saw my score, which was a full grade letter higher then his and all of a sudden he not only spoke English but he wanted me to help him!
People create issues where there never was an issue there in the 1st place but then when someone treats them that way, they play the racism card.
Sorry for my rant, things like this just piss me off because a little common sense, respect and courtesy would solve a lot of our problems.

I'll quote the Simpsons here, as my response to that. Bart's pet elephant, Stampy has proven too unruly to keep as a household pet so the family decides to donate him to an animal sanctuary. Then the elephant starts ramming his head into other elephants. Which leads us to:

Warden: "Well, animals are not like people, Mrs. Simpson. Some of them act badly because they've had a hard life, or have been mistreated...but, like people, some of them are just jerks."

Jerks transcend sex, culture, race, language, everything. Some people are just jerks.

This game is Japanese made, right? How can you accuse the devs for being racist when they come from a country that had literally nothing to do with Africa ever? They obviously didn't do it on purpose, it's just a coincidence. I doubt they gave the location a second thought. They just said 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if this game was set somewhere other than the states?' and someone yelled out 'Africa' and they all thought 'why not?'.

This shit will only drive sales of the game anyhoo, it's only racist if youre in the middle of best buy and scream "I cant wait to get home and blast all these Mississippi wind chimes straight to hell!" I could see that happening here in TN.

Exactly, they shouldn't be offended because they aren't a minority group but if it is a minority group, then they can be offended - DOUBLE STANDARD anyone?
Same with religion, if Jesus is made fun of in South Park and Family Guy its ok but move on to another religion where a comic strip included Mohammed and then violence breaks out over it? - Sorry I' not picking on any religion, those are just 2 very easy and visible examples that have occurred, no offence intended.

This ongoing debate is really upsetting me. Usually, the "race" card could apply to a white male shooting up blacks just for frills.

However, given the nature of Resident Evil, racism shouldn't even be considered here.

A. The T-Virus outbreak turns ordinary citizens into unstable, paranormal creatures. Not exactly "zombies" but monstrous, human-like creatures.

B. This outbreak, for this game, happens to occur where? In AFRICA. Why aren't we shooting up mexicans/spaniards? Because we're in Africa. The culture and people are reflected in the geography.

With these two points, the african community is being overrun with the virus and the outbreak has to be stopped, like in any other RE game. So the people who pose a threat have to be killed, otherwise you'll be killed by them. There's no racism here. I'm surprised these idiots didn't play the "race" card in RE4 with the spanish community and references.

I don't get this anymore.
Why does everyone go crazy Resident Evil 5 Racist but completely ignore the fact that is Resident Evil 4 you are a white guy killing a bunch of Spaniards.

So what does having a white guy killing a black guy automatically make it racist but then switch that black guy to any other race make it perfectly ok.I no longer see how people consider things racist anymore.

I still can't believe this. How does all of this "racism" fly by everyone head with Resident Evil 4 which once again you are white and kill all these non zombie Spaniards but the "racism" hits everyone hard in Resident Evil 5 when you are a white guy killing a bunch of non zombie Africans.

If anything the people who ignore the other REs "racism" and only see it in RE5 are the racist for seeing it above all other things in the game.
