Why are casual games encouraged?

Because they sell.

Because;

1. They appeal to a wider audience than core games.

2. As stated above, they sell well.

And 3. In our increasingly time-poor society, many people who want to spend some time playing games don't have a lot of time to do so, so requiring games they can pick up and get into/complete fairly quickly.

I propose a motion that we abandon the terms "core game", "hardcore game", "core gamer", and "hardcore gamer".

Does anyone second the motion?

No, because there is a clear difference between the two.

The truth is casual games are almost exclusively "encouraged" on the two Nintendo platforms because of the demographics of the user base. The first reason is that a great number of Wii and DS owners want those types of games. The second reason is because a company doesn't have to spend vast amount of development dollars so the chance for profitability is greater.

lets see, majesco announced jan 30th 2008 that mama had sold 1.6m units

in their conference call majesco announced they have sold a total of 3.7m units of mama

so that means in the last fiscal year they sold 2.1m units of the mama franchise..... >____>

Worst two games to mention for justifying third party games sales, their both extremely casual and borderline on grandma hip replacement therapy, not to mention the horrible 32-bit like graphics of jillian michaels would be easy on degrading eye sight. Both games sell on title alone - "cooking" and "fitness", enough said.

(*these types of games success only encourage more low production flash-esque titles in the future)

Uh, casual doesn't always mean crap. Cooking Mama is a very fun game, and remains one of my top 5 on my iPhone as it combines the DS touch screen type of functionality and the wii's motion controls, but all on the go. It's one of the most polished games for portables, and polish is something that we should all give them credit for.

Majesco is a great company and I'm VERY happy that they are succeeding. Just because it isn't some FPS with some cursing soldiers in a post apocalyptic world environment (sadly, you have NO idea what game I'm talking about) doesn't mean it's not fun to play. Get over yourself and look past the graphics if it insults your manly hood and you'll find a great gem.

while i agree on the fitness game (a wiifit clone), cooking mama is nothing like the other cooking games on wii/ds, its advertised and shown as a regular game, while the gameplay could be called casual, its traditional pick up and play, arcade gameplay (speaking to the DS versions)

cooking mama sells so well because of the franchise star, mama

even for gardening mama, majesco is pushing the character, mama has trademark expressions/broken english and a exclusive visual style

without mama it would just be another shovelware title, i doubt it would be as popular as it is

Orion,

How did you make that leap about what Mike from his comment? Is it because you like cooking mamma and felt that he insulted you by calling it casual crap? I think you were out of line on your verbal assault of Mike.

My comment about generic FPS was in his broad, unfiar and brash as his quote "borderline on grandma hip replacement therapy" when talking about Cooking Mama.

And being sick and TIRED of games always being ridiculed on this site because they aren't all realistic looking (for some reasony, artistic style is slammed because it's "simple"), I mentioned his adversion to these types of graphics.. which he alluded to in his extremely brash quote "these types of games success only encourage more low production flash-esque titles in the future".

So no, I was making a point. I always love it that it's ok to come on here with a loud and left field opinion, but god forbid you oppose it with the same rigor, then you're slammed.

It's an opinion, and I honestly think I made excellent points. So sorry if you don't like it.

@Orion

"Worst two games to mention for justifying third party games sales"
This line was the topic of my comment, my squabble was mainly in regards to jillian michaels, but as cooking mama is mentioned in the article I so obviously referred to it as well. Disregarding jm for the moment (aka $2 production fitness ultimatum, that you didn't even mention - I wonder why), cooking mama is indeed a gem of a game and one which I'm not trying to deny so - I merely inferred the extreme casual "easy to pick up and play game play that really appeals to consumers" game that it is. With the therapy remark, as much of a smart a$$ comment as it is, it can still technically apply (emphasis on 'can').

As the 32-bit remark didn't refer to cooking mama (although check out the 'press' screen shots for jm - again enough said), we'll move onto the "low production flash-esque" remark. 1 - the franchise is low production (fact - the developers themselves didn't even anticipate the scale of success they would have), 2 - the game can be considered flash-esque as you rightly pointed out with it having a core port to a mobile phone.

With that being said the main message I was trying to point out was as quote "these types of games success only encourage more low production flash-esque titles in the future", that other developers see their success and try to emulate it, look at activision - they've just recently released five trash shovelware titles, and this is activision were talking about, third party development on the wii wont be taken seriously until low production gimmicky games who rely mostly on the title cover stop making undeserved profit (especially in regards to the article - to not be encouraged). As for the rest of your comments, most of it is drivel based off your own thoughts, and my remarks being taken completely out of context.

I hope not. Advent Rising was garbage.

Regardless, i'm glad that Majesco is doing well. Cooking Mama is one of the few "casual"
games I really enjoy (on the DS at least. don't really care for the Wii titles)

The casual games support all the hardcore games they do bring over for the ds, like Away! shuffe dungeon, guilty gear dust strikers, nanostray ,nanostray 2, air traffic controller, mech assault: phantom war, and age of empires: kings.

Most companies it seems now do this, with either casual/kid ports like ubisoft, or remakes and cash-ins like square-enix. Especially on next gen systems, development costs are too high and a+ titles can be a huge gamble. It's better to pad the risk some.

Majesco though always was like this, even back in the day, so it's not like anything has changed. They always mixed casual with quirky hardcore.
