The Lord of the Rings license has journeyed to EA and back again to Warner Bros. The Cut Scene reports that the licensing deal for EA to create titles based on the Lord of the Rings films quietly expired at the end of last year. At that time, the rights reverted back to New Line, which is part of Warner Bros. When EA received the Ring license back in 2001, Warner wasn't fully committed to the game business ... that's certainly changed this decade. Warner has also heavily invested in Turbine, developer of Lord of the Rings Online. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment apparently declined to comment on the story.
The movie industry is certainly attempting with increasing regularity to enter the game space, hiring executives that may get the job done. Paramount is ready to publish (the rumored) Star Trek DAC in a couple months, while Disney has become far less reliant on licensing its properties to THQ over the years. In time, it appears we'll see more in-house development of games that we currently see "licensed" out, which will hopefully mean better products.

I'm still sad that EA never made more Return of the King-style games. I thought ROTK was very well done. Everyone I showed the game to enjoyed it.

Yeah, Return of the King was pretty good. I found it to be frustratingly difficult though, but maybe I just suck?

I hate EA but I thought it was cool as well......Oh well we will see what Warner does with this franchise......they really should be action adventure type/MMO type games.

Because EA actually makes good games now?
Now if you said Activision... that's the bucket of balls EA used to carry around.

I'm going to be keeping a close eye on WB. Though FEAR 2 didn't appeal to my tastes, I usnderstand that it was well received. And Arkham Asylum is looking really good. I have this feeling that for once a movie studio may actually become successful at becoming a good video game publisher.

Hopefully they will actually do something with the license. The only LOTR game I've cared about was that Return of the King movie

Yeah, this is probably for the best. EA has done pretty shitty with this franchise. The movie games were all pretty bad, that FFX ripoff was pretty bad, Conquest was awful, and the White Council game that actually sounded like it had potential never got made.
Well, it probably would have been bad too. Let's hope for some quality Rings games in the future.

Wait, someone actually thinks MOVIE STUDIOS will make in house games better than the licensed crap that is out now? Really? Because I foresee even WORSE games will come of this. The studios are just trying to cut out the middle man, not make better products.
But hey, we shall see I suppose, there is always hope.... I guess.

What is said is sometimes these things get tossed about too and fro and games that people would buy and play never get made and games that no one wants to see made get made.
Activision used to hold license on Star Trek they put out two of my favorite RTS's Armada and Armada II. I wish they would do an update to what I thought were relatively successful titles and make an Armada III.
Then we get games that just don't do it like Legacy and Conquest both good Star Trek games, but they don't go far enough.

Yes! I'm just happy that this game license is still alive. I think this series is vastly superior to the Star Wars series (yes they both have their fanboys) and we need a good game to do it justice.
It would be cool if a company like Bioware or Bethesda worked on a game.
