After racking their brains and kicking around a few of different proposals, Valve has figured out how to rate servers automatically in the back end of Steam for Team Fortress 2. Valve's Robin Walker detailed how the system will work and help players in search of a decent game (Read: Not achievement farming): New servers begin with a score of 0, each time a player connects it loses 15 points but gains 1 point per player for each minute they remain inside (with a 45 point max per user).
"In short," Walker writes, "servers that have lots of players joining & leaving rapidly will score badly." The rating will ensure players are walking into honest assessments of a server's quality -- sometimes server hosts write false descriptions to entice people to join. Well, with the new system those jerks can keep their phony servers because the first order of business on Valve's end is to completely "delist" them. The server breakdown (pictured above) shows last week's server statistics, ignoring all password-protected servers as well as servers had fewer than 200 connections per day. Walker also notes that Valve will continue to improve their ability to measure these types of server problems.

this seems like a good move, when wil it be implemented.
Though think they should try it out for a week before they go all in. I'm sure this will find a way to fail.

Very good. but this better not be the reason why L4D servers are all going SUPER LAGGY.

I have yet to be able to play L4D online because of this, Luckily I have friends who play PC games and we get 4 player LAN action going but since the games release (or maybe earlier, I pre-ordered it, did pre-orders get it early? I don't remember) I have yet to be able to connect to a single playable server, every other game I own works FINE online, but L4D is laggy beyond playable every time.

Won't people exploit this by repeatedly connecting to and disconnecting from rival servers? Or are there server rivalries? I don't really keep up with the "scene", I just play the game.

Easy way to stop that is to log the Steam ID, so no one person can do that repeatedly.

FUCK YEAH! This will weed out all those servers that advertise false player numbers (says it nearly full while it's empty). That was always a pet hate of mine.

Not a bug, it's arseholes with modified servers. Valve couldn't just de-list modded servers, as there are a lot that ran tweaked games legitimately. I always take the time to fav good servers and take note of bull-shitters.

Oh this is going to kill those servers, because I know the way some of them work is when the server is empty it fills it up with bots (usually 31/32, 15/16, you get it) and then once you join it kicks all the bots, If bots count as people joining/leaving they are really screwed! I don't really get the point of this, so they got ONE person to join, who is probably going to immediately leave. Are they making money off this or something? I can't see any ads because I have a ton of ad servers blocked from the hosts file so they can shove their ad revenue up their ass if that's the case.

Yes it sucks that the consoles havn't gotten the updates yet but you've still received an amazing deal and heaps of content in what you bought.

im not saying anything bad about the orange box, i still play team fortress, and i've played the half-life and portal games more than once. I'm just getting pissed that i keep seeing all these updates for the pc coming, and it's been over a year now and still nothing for the 360.
so like i said, just give me some kind of news that they're still working on it, some glimmer of hope, that's all

I really wish I knew all the behind-the-scenes work going on the 360 update, so then I could direct my frustration to the offending party.

I can see this system being easily exploited. A rival server could be put under by repeatedly joining and leaving. There's no universal consensus for what makes a "good" server - some players like to have really serious, coordinated games, others just want to rush the control point, die, and do it all over again, and more want an fy_iceworld clone with soundboards and radios blaring over every microphone on the server. This sort of rating system doesn't take any qualitative variables into account - it's simply how many and how long players stay on one server, and in my experience, that's no real indication of quality at all.

Chances are, being Valve, they've taken this into consideration.

Steam accounts have SteamIDs. They're sort of like IP addresses, but you can't change them--they're tied to your account. I'm sure Valve have made it so that they will only record a certain amount of data per SteamID; also, SteamIDs that repeatedly join and leave a server will probably stop having its data collected for that particular server.

What a great idea... implement an arbitrary rating system that has very little to do with server quality and is highly exploitable, then pat yourself on the back.
This is the kind of multiplayer design that the industry needs less of.

Dude, it's Valve.
You should know that they have a habit of releasing buggy half-assed broken ideas that everybody hates, before polishing them into absolute perfection through the process of trial and error.
It happened with Steam, it happened to most TF2 class updates and it's currently happening to Left 4 Dead, so personally I'm ignoring the negative criticism and any flaws I can see because I know for a fact that each last damn person won't shut up about how great the system is twelve months from now on.

Whereas the PC version gets updated nearly once a week.
Even some of their older titles get nice twice a year updates.
So I would guess that as Valve is quiet capable of updating games and supporting them rather well on the PC, that maybe it's your platform makers of choice fault at sticking in strict guidelines designed to squeeze cash from every orifice.
MY guess might be that Valve are attempting to push MS into a bit of a corner into providing 360 owners with a more PC like gaming experience, ie a better one.
Oh n Gabe Newell isn't a fan of consoles, that should always be factored into why Valve don't do interesting stuff for consoles.

What are you guys talking about? This rating system is independent of the actual servers content or style of doing things. Instead it just takes into account how long someone is willing to stay in the server and play. If the server is good in their eyes, they will stay. If not, they will leave. If the general consensus of a server to most people is that it's run poorly then it will get a low ranking due to people joining, not liking it, and leaving. Otherwise players with a variety of things they enjoy about TF2 will stay for more then enough time to get the server a decent ranking. This works fine.

If you join an empty server that's falsely advertised as having a lot of players, you aren't going to stick around and wait for it to actually fill up. Thus the server loses points. A large number of people do that over time because the server is *still* empty and it ends up with a very low score.
That's what they're talking about.

The horizontal axis represents the spectrum of servers. It doesn't have individual notches of course, because there are so many of them.
It's a little confusing because the horizontal axis is often used to describe change over instances of time, but this is a visual description of the quality of a population of servers, ordered by score so that they form a curve.
The black curve, moving from left to right, describes the quality of servers, from best to worst (under the rules they've developed). As explained in the article, servers lose points (15) when a player joins, and earn them back for time (1 point/min) that the player spends on the server. If a server has a high rate of connections, but a poor rate of retention, it's score will become dragged down. Conversely, if it has a high rate of retention, it's score will shoot up. If a player joins and leaves in under 15 minutes, this will result in a net loss of points for the server. As you can see on the right, if this happens often enough a server will dip below the 0, into negative scores. A low rate of retention also allows for a high rate of connections (free slots opening up all the time), meaning a server will drown into negative scores if it's bad, which is what is inferred by the orange bar. The purple line represents rate of connections to servers, with the best and the worst servers having a high rate of connections (people queue up for the best, there are always new slots opening up for the worst. :P)

Just a quick note to all those still bitching about the 360 version:
NOBODY - FUCKING - CARES!
EVERY SINGLE TIME a TF2 thread, you dick-weeds show up and start whining like a broken fan motor about it. Okay we get it. You want updates too. Tell Valve and Microsoft that. However;
WE DON'T GIVE A SHIT!
I don't care if you're poor, or an idiot who thinks FPS games are better with a pad. SHUT UP!
If you want to play TF2 so badly, why don't you upgrade your PC? It wasn't too system intensive when it came out, and it's even less so now. Even if you do get your fucking update (which you will still bitch about), you'll never get all the custom maps and server rules you get with the PC version. In short, get a "new" video card or STFU!

The point is (albeit rather bluntly made) that this isn't the thread. You have been down-voted multiple times for a reason. It has been made clear, time and time again, that valve will not give the 360 as much attention as PC, just like [Generic Xbox Dev] won't give PC attention. Spamming "Give us teh updatez" on any thread with the words "Team," "Fortress," and "Two" won't give your argument any more attention than it already has.

- It doesn't cost that much to get your PC to run TF2.
- You can use a pad on the PC version, if you like having your arse handed to you.

2.) No one is acting superior. You're making yourself seem inferior by falling back on tired PC insults.
3.) Down voting is when people as a whole consider your comment "bad." Usually there is a justification for this, the reason being stated above. I was simply explaining this reason.

I don't think this system would work for L4D. People don't necessarily leave a server because it's bad. They usually leave a server because their team is getting stomped into the ground. Rage quitters would throw the whole thing off. The lobby picks the server anyway. Not the players. You're right about a lot of servers sucking though. Bad ping and crazy settings. They definitely need to do something. Maybe they could rank the servers by how many times a "Return to Lobby" vote passes.
