Hasselhoff taps 'celebrity card' to nab his daughter a Wii
David Hasselhoff, representative of talking cars and safe beaches the world over, recently told a very funny story to MTV Multiplayer. He says he's one to "play celebrity cards," and when his daughter said she wanted a Wii, he got busy. Calling up his local game store, The Hoff was told that no systems were left, but was quickly able to charm the clerk into admitting that the store had held one system back. "Hold that game. I will be over in 30 minutes," he said, eventually showing up to the store where a very shocked employee declared, "Knight Rider! Dude!"Obviously, the store sold him the game system, and we imagine his daughter was incredibly happy that her dad used his celebrity to get it, but wouldn't it have been faster to just call up Nintendo? We heard Iwata's hooked on a feeling.

Nice.
Doing stuff like that would be so fun.
Comtar @ Mar 13th 2009 2:09AM
Well I guess it's better then him vomiting drunk in front of her... Oh wait...

Meh, I don't see anything wrong with maneuvers like this, as long as you're not being a douche about it.
michas_pi @ Mar 13th 2009 2:49AM
Thankfully, that game store didn't hassle the Hoff.

Excellent, sire.

"The Hoff was told that no systems were left, but was quickly able to charm the clerk into admitting that the store had held one system back."
This kind of ticks me as for the part of the store lying saying they had no systems but then magically had 1.

I am going to start saying that I am David Hasselhoff when I am calling about stuff like this from now on. Might even have to impersonate a bit. Then when I get there I will say I am his secretary/helper guy.
Anam @ Mar 13th 2009 8:59AM
You better pick your cover and stick with it. Because saying "I am David Hasselhoff's secretary and/or helper guy" is sure to expose your master plan.

There needs to be a law that puts celebrities down if they try this crap. Just cause his daughter doesn't have a Wii (it's been 2 years already!) doesn't mean she can't wait a week to get one delivered. Fathering fail.
Glock XIII @ Mar 13th 2009 3:09AM
so, if he pays for it then its okay
sohcahtoa @ Mar 13th 2009 6:44AM
I don't see whats wrong with celebrity pulling out some fame card to get what they want. As long as they are doing it nicely, politely and charms his way through it. And not be like an a-hole, aka, Ashlee Simspon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRCPkfxbzIo
He has done nothing more than a dad trying to score a deal for his daughter.
mikemick @ Mar 13th 2009 11:00AM
They didn't put a timeframe on when the story occurred, just when it was told. He recently told the story, but it could have been set back at the system launch.
Duke @ Mar 13th 2009 11:04AM
I dont see what he did that was wrong. Hell, he paid for it. You are bothered that they said they were sold out and he said he was DH so they would admit they had one. I say good for him. There are a lot of things celebs do to bug me, but this story doesn't seem to fit that mold.
David @ Mar 13th 2009 3:48AM
The only card I'd need to tap if I wanted to buy a Wii is my Visa. I see them all the time now, are they still that rare?
Ironhide @ Mar 13th 2009 3:42AM
Not sure if anyone here watches Supernatural, but I was working in a big box store in the gaming department, and Jenson Ackles, the older brother from the series came in and asked me if we could sell him a Wii. We were holding them for a flyer that upcoming Friday but I was more than willing to let him have one. Got his autograph too. Real nice guy to boot.
Nook @ Mar 13th 2009 10:19AM
Cool, it's nice to hear when people act decent and polite. Did you by chance sell him a copy of anything good with the console? Or is his plan to get back into hell one built upon playing shovelwarez? :P
Great show, one of the maybe two TV programs I watch.
CubeGuy @ Mar 13th 2009 11:56AM
Excuse me while I hunt you down out of jealousy.

Stephen Colbert came into the movie theater where I worked right before the Colbert Report went on the air. He was a real nice guy and I got him to sign my yearbook. He's a fellow alum.
Trini Sario @ Mar 13th 2009 4:51AM
I'd be happy if my dad would do such thing :)
@David : It's a norm.

You have to wonder why this is considered impressive....given that Wiis are as easy to find as one's ass these days.
Quattro @ Mar 13th 2009 6:04AM
Have you seen my ass anywhere?
esposch @ Mar 13th 2009 5:49AM
Why do we care?
I bought a Wii once too!
AwesomeTown @ Mar 13th 2009 7:21AM
That video never gets old. The Hoff can surf on motorcycles. 'Nuff said.
Will @ Mar 13th 2009 7:28AM
Ugh, stuff like this really irks me.
If he had to coax the employee into saying they had one left, they were probably keeping it for someone else. Someone who reserved it first, who may even have pre-paid.
And then this guy swoops in and gets it almost immediately because he's an irrelevant icon. UGH.
meist3r @ Mar 13th 2009 7:33AM
Since when is Hasselhoff still considered a celebrity?
"Get shitfaced and roll around on the floor with a shitty burger! Dude!"

Now THAT is one authentic "ZOMG!!!!1", face. lol

I see nothing wrong with this. Stores unfortunately are told to hold a few back... supply and demand people. It really sucks but it happens. When Wii was released I was working at Future Shop, and quite a few times we would get a large shipment of Wii`s and have to hold some till sunday (we got them on tuesday) and then we were told to hold 20 or so from that shipment in the back. All the Hoff did was use skills to grease the employee...
I did the same type of thing 2 weeks ago, after buying a Wii my kids wanted Mario Kart Wii.. which was pretty much sold out everywhere... the lazy entertainment people working at FutureShop now of course said they were all out... when after using my former work contacts at the store I was able to find out they had 6 stashed in the back and had one of them brought out for me.
XenMaster4 @ Mar 13th 2009 3:28PM
I really don't understand this. Sure it would suck if on Monday someone came in and asked for a Wii and you didn't have one to sell since they were all sold last week and the truck wasn't coming until Tuesday; but why is a sale on Monday better than a sale last Friday? Why hold stock back and refuse to sell it so you can sell it later?
If you're claiming to be out of stock anyway - why not be really out of stock with a few hundred bucks extra in the register?
Arkitekt @ Mar 13th 2009 3:45PM
Well the holding of the systems were set by head office so I can't really be sure why. My speculation is that they did it to be fair, or at least try to be. A few times they said they would have X amount of consoles for sale on Sunday, Allowing people to line up. It also has a second purpose.. 50 people line up... 20 consoles are sold... the chances of other things to be sold (consoles, games, accessories) are high or at least by their circular logic it is.
Booxatron @ Mar 13th 2009 5:10PM
Damn, I was really hoping that video would be a link to Iwata doing some Hasselhoff karaoke....oh well.
Mazrael @ Mar 14th 2009 3:27PM
Surely 'Michael Knight' would want cutting edge technology... :s
Garst @ Mar 15th 2009 3:18PM
Really? He had to pull the "celebrity card" to get a Wii? I was in a Walmart in South Bend yesterday, and they had quite a few in stock. I could have counted, but this isn't the first time I've been in stores that had a few or more in stock. Plus, I've had my Wii for two years now, and I didn't (and couldn't) use the "celebrity card."
